I think that if you just add a box where we can drag the items to any position and let people link them with arrows it would turn out OK. You would also need to label the routes, and give them different colours so we can distinguish them.

I would love it if item-purchase was drag and drop when I'm editing.
I HATE how when I want to change an early game item, I have to remove every, single, item before it so I can have them placed where I need them.
