Hey all, i have been playing for about 2 days now and i've found i have an affinity for mages or really squishy players, which means i die a lot.
Basically i'm here to ask some general tips on how to play these champions effectively and i was hoping you could help.

Thanks in advance ;D

You have to be very aware of positioning so you do not die. Stay in the back of the fight with your tanky people in front of you, even when you're wandering around as a team. Dodge in and out of the fight when you're cooldowns are up since unless you have Lich Bane your auto attacks won't do much. Mages excel in burst rather than sustained damage, try to burst down the enemy's most valuable player such as their ad carry or mage. If your mage has an AOE ult try to hit as many people with it as you can and don't waste it on one person unless it secures a kill. Make sure you're last hitting well in lane, because you still want to have more creep kills than the enemy mage.

Not always. :P

Karthus, Ryze, Cassiopeia and Vladimir for example are more about sustained DPS than burst.

lol idk, in lanephase Ryze with a Tear of the Goddess and catalyst of the protector is pretty burst-y XD. But in general, what Mowen said. As a mage, positioning and targeting is everything. If their AD carry and AP carry are both dead because you have blown them to pieces, the chances of you dying in that teamfight have dropped by about half. Never be the first to initiate the fights, and don't just stand around casting spells, ya gotta move around a fair bit to shake off the aggro and make the enemy team give up on catching you and focus on someone else (like your tank).

Another tip for playing mid effectively is to play not to agressive. Focus on lasthitting and not on harissing the opponent. A good farm is sometimes even better then a kill. Generel for every role: dont push your lane to hard if you or the enemy has a jungler. If you have a combo with your champ like Brand (e,q,w) or Kassadin (r,q,e) try do damage your enemy over time. Outfarm him, show him that he is not allowed to farm without getting massive damage. But dont forget your mana =) And if you feel to squishy as AP carry try out Rod of Ages and Rylai's Crystal Scepter. That gives you about 900 HP, mana, a bit cc, and good AP.

I hope this will help you :D

Hmm... Mages and squishy champions should always gank from a bush or have great positioning behind the allied tanky champions. That way you can kite really well and do damage without threat of being eaten alive.

Completely off-topic: Woot! Looks like Mowen got a promo! :D

What's a Mowen?

ANYWAY, it's like it was said: bursters require positioning. Over time damagers or champions with over time ultis (like Kennen, Morgana or Swain) can also benefit from Zhonya's Hourglass's active, provided you remember to use it :D

If you like playing AD carries, positioning is just or even more important. You can poke with auto-attacks, but wait for your tank to initiate (unless you're absurdly fed and it's a 1 vs 1 with a guy who has no reliable CC).

I see Lux in your avatar: she's the example of high damage on a small package: stay back, shield friends with your W, use bushes if you can, etc ;)

1. Posisionating on the Mid lane, If you push really hard your lane you can get ganked from the enemy jungler.

2. Buying Sigth wards, it saves lifes.

3. DON'T push your lane.

4.Map awarness.

Yes, my new project start it. Feel free to PM me and give me suggestions to be the best blog on MOBAfire!

When I first play LoL, Ryze was my very first mage champion, and looking back in the past, I used to die a lot too. But now, I'm not so noobie anymore. :)

Here's some tips:

1) Play PASSIVELY. Try not be too aggressive early on.
2) Grab GHOST and/or FLASH summoner skill. You need to be able to escape quickly.
3) Try not to OVEREXTEND yourself in lane, especially when your escape mechanism (like Ghost and Flash) is on cooldown. This is to minimize your chance of getting ganked (a.k.a. ambushed).
4) Don't be too AGGRESSIVE, especially early in the game.

Things you will need to learn over time:

1) Last hitting. This is why you don't want to be too aggressive because mage needs money from killing minions.
2) Positioning. Don't be like me who used to engage like a frontline solder. Stay back and spam spells.
3) Try not using your mouse when it could be done using keyboard (such as leveling up skills via Ctrl+Q/W/E or teleporting back to base via 'B'). It's much faster that way.
4) Get used to the keyboard. As simple as it sounds, there are times where I got confused between 'D' and 'F'. :(

There are a lot of other things to cover, but the ones above are very important to understand. Hope this prove useful to you. :)
