I mean, AP Kog ain't bad, but I usually run AS Kog, which seems to be the most viable.
Bio-Arcane Barrage can bring down anyone instantly, even tanks, with enough AS, in conjunction with
Madred's Bloodrazor, due to the max HP % damage. I level that up first, and tbh, I usually harass really well in lane/mid/wherever. The range buff of your W helps a lot with that as you level it up. I would recommend, for early harassing and dominance, maxing your W first. I usually rape with that ^_^

If you're intent on running AP kog then you're going to want to max Void Ooze ASAP, as it's the best nuke you have. What you said sums it up - CS a lot with void ooze and your ultimate (harass when you can) but don't focus too much on zoning. You're a carry, and are strongest late-game. Get the fundamentals down first (last hitting and farming up to that late-game).

Also kog really isn't a strong solo laner. He is easily harassed and forced back. AP kog is better early game since he can harass easier with void ooze while AS kog is harder early game and depending on who you're laning against you will have to be very defensive and simply focus on last hitting.
Kog'maw isn't that strong a character in ranked, unless you're counterpicking to a team of high hp heroes. It's simply that his early game is hard (so makes him hard to solo and farm) and he doesn't have much utility compared to say, Ashe, another range carry.
I still think Kog is fun though, I run AS kog (which I think is more viable, but AP kog is more FUN). I have a guide on AS kog. If you do run AS do focus on magic pen for your madreds / W (so getting sorc shoes and malady like you mentioned is good).
I usually start with boots (AS kog) which lets me avoid harass better. I actually run movespeed quints too. You might wanna try switching out your AP glyphs for MR glyphs if you'll go AS, for better early game survivability. If you are having trouble soloing just have a support babysit you in another lane and let you get all the last hits.

Yea Mowen has a really good Kog guide, toe-tally check it out ^_^

Ya Mowen, I've referred to your guide tons of times, its using the MP glyphs in my hybrid and AS builds was definitely inspired by the info in your guide. I've honestly considered the idea of replacing the AP glyphs with MP glyphs as well. Though at the moment, saving up for the move speed quints I think is more of a priority for me.
With AS/AP Kog, I believe you would definately want Madred's and Malady. After that, I think you have enough attack speed and should grab a Deathcap if you want. I'm pretty sure he will rip everything apart in seconds. And if the fun just keeps going on, I would get Hextech, but that's just me. ^_^

Yeah when it comes to kog builds I've definitely read through the top few guides. And when it comes to runesets one of the things I've been trying to do (especially for randoms) is to stick with one that allows me to go AP, hybrid, or full out AS/AD pretty easily.
When I go full hybrid, usually the items I have are sorc shoes, malady, madred's, archangels staff, void staff (or abyssal rod), and last being either deathcap(ranged damage and rediculous bio arcane), rylai's(if the extra CC might help end the game), lichbane(pvp burst+tower killing), rageblade(damage output+tower killing), or rarely dfg... whichever I feel suits the game.
btw dfg on someone with no MR and 50 MP hurts... alot.

The big thing I'd like to work on is my deny, particularly using bio-arcane pre-level 6. I've tried it many times, but normally the result winds up being my opponent could care less about the damage, rushes me, and I'm pretty much forced back, as they're able to put out much more than I can. I'd assume getting flat stat runes might help with that over the stat/level runes, but I'm curious how some of the Kog masters handle things, either in ranked, or in randoms... where you don't always have a team that's willing to support you.
So... as I normally run with MP Marks, mp5/lvl seals, and AP/lvl glyphs. What winds up being more effective is focusing the first few levels on void ooze. By level 4 ooze, I'm usually able to start 2 shotting creep packs between ooze and artillery. This generates a pretty decent income of gold for me, allowing me to build items rather fast. My first two items are typically sorc shoes and malady, and what I choose next typically depends on the team we face. Madred's is usually third, unless the team seems susceptible to magic damage, where an archangels staff might come next instead.
I'm aware that AP Kog generally doesn't fly in ranked, but any advice would be appreciated.
