On paper, it seems like a good idea. But with your build, most of your damage is magic. Udyr has to be built tanky in essence to solve his kiting problem so, you have that covered.
There's nothing wrong with using both, just do what you think works best. After the mana cost decreases it doesn't even matter that much as it did before. Well, I played a lot of Udyr in the past and I've found that Q > E > W > R works best for me: Q W Q E Q E Q E Q E E W W W W R R R
But I went with R W R E R E W Q W Q Q (3 points into everything) and the rest situational for quite a long time. It works as well.
For your itembuild, don't get Frozen Mallet and Trinity Force, get either or. Try out something like:
Cloth Armor > Boots of Speed > Wriggles Lantern > Heart of Gold > Merc Treads or Ninja Tabi > Trinity Force or Frozen Mallet > Banshees Veil > Randuins Omen
Youmuus Ghostblade and The Black Cleaver are great if you want to play him more offensive like:
Cloth Armor > Boots of Speed > Wriggles Lantern > The Brutalizer > Merc Treads or Ninja Tabi > Trinity Force or Frozen Mallet > Youmuus Ghostblade > The Black Cleaver

- Don't get both frozen mallet and trinity force. Trinity force provides a 25% chance of slowing, frozen mallet provides a 100% chance of slowing. The two items just create redundancies.
- Usually the reason people don't get both trinity force and madred's bloodrazor is, as Udyr, you need to be uber tanky, and usually you can't fit both in a build (they're both very expensive) without being too squishy (despite them both providing defensive benefits).
- I would agree that you can max both phoenix and tiger; however, since bear stance is necessary for the speed boost, you'd have to forsake turtle stance. This isn't necessarily a problem, just be aware your shield will be sub-par.
- Regarding your mentioned build, I'd do this:
Cloth Armor/5x
Health Potion
Madred's Razors
Boots
Heart of Gold
Mercury's Treads
Trinity Force
Banshee's Veil
Madred's Bloodrazor
Guardian Angel
Randuin's Omen
That should give you a good balance of tankiness and damage at all stages of the game. Just beware; if you end up doing poorly while building your trinity force, you should build more defense before finishing it off.
EDIT: Also, it seems like if you're doing awesome, an
Atma's Impaler might do well in the place of the GA.

I jungle with Udyr and I typically go 21/0/9 masteries.
Cloth armor and health pots to start.
I generally go Tiger/Turtle/Tiger/Bear/Turtle/Tiger however I've been experimenting and found that
Tiger/Phoenix/Turtle/Tiger/Bear/Tiger actually makes killing Wraith at lvl 2 a breeze and makes your jungle a lot faster with the AoE dmg from phoenix.
My route is standard Blue/Wolves/Wraiths/Golems/Red
But you can grab red at level three with tiger/phoenix/turtle stance and blue buff no problem.
Items are almost always
Wriggle/Mercs/Triforce from there you have plenty of items to work with. If you need to go tanky you have plenty of damage between Wriggles and Triforce so sunfire/force of nature/banshee's veil or instead of sunfire get a Frozen Heart. Hope this helped.

Wow, lots of different forms of advice from all, and all really helpful. I didn't even notice that I was being redundant with my slow with frozen mallet. Also, I was thinking about this more, and how's a thornmail on udyr to counter heavy-physical teams?
Also, does bear speed really have to be maxed? I noticed that I was able to catch up to a kassadin and an ezreal who were both jumping to try and escape my fury, and my bear was only on the 3rd rank. Got them both because the foolish ezreal thought that because i only had a quarter of my hp I couldn't kill both kassadin and him after i stunned kassadin. It seems like the more I think about udyr more items come to mind, like a bloodthirster. Im reluctant about infinity edge because of turtle stance's lack of crit. At the same time, how much damage would atma's impaler give? I don't think that udyr has enough hp at lvl 18 without say, a mogs, to make atma's be a heavy-hitter, as at around 3500 HP atma's gives about +70 AD, but now that i'm saying it, that +70 AD and armor does sound pretty nice. Anyways, thanks for all of the replies. I didn't think I would get so many so fast :)

1. yes, bear must be maxed - you'll only notice a marginal difference with turtle maxed (you really shouldn't be using turtle much anyways), while bear will make a huge difference (the difference between being kited by someone without intense slows and catching up to them).
The bloodthirster would be a great pure offense item, but beware about getting pure offense items - you'll be too squishy if you buy them at the wrong times.
Don't get infinity edge, many better items exist for non-crit champs at cheaper prices.
Banshee's veil, Randuin's omen, and trinity force all give health - you'll have enough health to make atma's impaler hit hard.
hmmh i play udyr 1-8-21 with R-W-R-W-E -> R>W>Q>E my runes are:
red: AS
blue: AS
yellow: armor+
Quints: 1AS, 2 MS
route wolves->wraiths->golems ->recall ->full blue rotation
i start with regrowth pendant and with this setup i have exactly the gold i need for philostone when i recall. Like this you have a fast jungle and are at pretty high health most of the time
items: philo ->boots of speed -> avarace/HoG-> the other -> mercs -> wriggles(depends on game) -> sheen -> triforce -> anything you need^^

Sounds good Sam, I'll have to start trying to jungle Udyr again :3
You probably want to switch those AS glyphs out tho. They are pretty bad.

I've seen a lot of builds here on mobafire, and a lot of the ones for Udyr say you can only get tiger or you can only get phoenix. But I feel that maxing them both works fairly well, and it makes udyr fairly bursty. Following along this same thought line, i've noticed that builds also have either madreds or trinity force, and not both. is there a reason for this? to me, since they're both items that cause udyr to deal heavy damage quickly, as well as be effective against the majority of enemies, why not use them both together? Is there something i've overlooked or is it simply the high cost?
Any opinions or criticisms on this are most appreciated, as I would like to learn the do's and dont's of the game.
