I think people were just testing it the first few days of new patch, but it's used on champions that have lane priority.(Shoving lane fast, for example: Ekko, Asol, Zoe.) The reason they used smite mid:
- Scuttlecrab was changed last patch so it gives way more gold and EXP. You can shove your lane fast and secure scuttle with your jungler.
- Steal enemy jgl camps and set them even further behind - while you get a massive exp lead. Ekko for example, can clear camps really fast with smite.
- The AP smite item now has "Lost chapter" as a component
- Red smite is pretty broken imo
People were trying it out but it doesn't work that well. For the most part there is no laner that I would take smite on. The only exception I would make to this rule is Ivern. When played as support, he can take smite to make counter-jungling easier and to share buffs with your team. An arguement could be made to use is on a roaming mid-lane so that you can smite monster camps for a quick burst of HP, but there are many other summoner spells that are much more beneficial to both you and your team, like Heal or Ignite. All in all, leave smite for the junglers.
Well the purpose is for healing and invading an enemy jungle, though i dont know on which champions you should take it, maybe Twisted Fate with Unsealed Spellbook? -Like take enemy raptors or something like that?
