Well she IS a support whether you build AP or not. Will of the Ancients is a great item if you have one or two other casters (or hybrids) on your team who can make use of the aura.

AD carries are prime targets for enemy AP carries. They'll usually be looking to nuke you if they get the chance, and can often kill you in one "burst" or spell rota"

"I'm not a fan of smart-casting in general. Especially for long-ranged skill-shots like Xerath's.
The only time I would consider using smart-cast would be for fast combos on champions like Annie and Ryze, or spammable spells like Twin Fang."
