Saw Virkayu's, who is a jungler and content creator that I respect, jungle tier list.

I looked it over and thought - Good to know, but...

What strikes me about tier lists is that while they tell you what is currently strong they don't tell you why the champion is strong or what it is strong against.

Say Warwick is God Tier (Tier 1+) (Virkayu has him at Tier 2 in his list)

And you see that you are against something like Azir, Jax, Jinx, Pyke, and Ornn.

And OMFSM Warwick is open!!!

Instalock!!!

Except you play the match out and have a good early game, maybe a few snags in the Mid game, and then you get to late game and lose, despite having what most people would say was a good overall game and a busted champion. You were the ACE on your team in op gg parlance.

What happened? Well

A) WW falls off somewhat come late game and often has to transition to a peeler roll as opposed to a pick/initiation roll
B) Azir, Pyke, and Ornn can bounce you around like a puppy even though you might have been the big bad wolf early and mid game
C) Jax can just E your ult and murder you afterwards so he can't even be a target if it is off cooldown.

Leaving aside the cancer that is Azir when he is remotely strong in the META.

The enemy team scales very well and have a lot of displacements, which can prevent WW from doing his job. So you can't just have a good early game. You have to slam dunk the early game, have very few mishaps in the Mid game, and close the game out before the enemy carries get three completed items.

So maybe the answer for this game wasn't Warwick, maybe it was Jarvan IV or Elise or maybe even Pantheon (who isn't even on the list) who ignored camps outside of what they needed to keep their levels up and permaganked.

If a jungler's job is to do more faster. You have to look at the enemy composition and determine if they have the tools to keep you and your team from doing more faster.

E.g. if you are Kindred vs Xin Zhao you do not want to run into Xin at Lvl 2 without a wall to hop over. He will kick the stuffing out of you.

If you are Xin Zhao you don't really want to run into Udyr.

So if you are in a situation like that you need to get creative with your pathing and avoid the enemy jungler because they have the tools to keep you from doing more faster, so avoiding them has to be part of your plan.

Occasionally, Riot will introduce something that is so busted it doesn't really matter what you are up against, but most of the time that is an unusual situation that they work quickly to rectify.

So X, Y, & Z are strong. That is great. You can even play all of them. Great! If you are just relying on their OPness to win you the game without having a plan that plays to their strengths, well good luck with that.

When to pick a champion is still an important question outside of which champion to pick.
