Going to talk about ADC because they are so item dependent for their strength and they don't lane alone and commonly have visitors to their lane via Mid roams, jungler ganks, or
Teleport ganks from their Top laner.
If you get a kill and you can't quickly take the turret, do not nuke the damn minion wave. Help your ADC quickly push the minion wave but give the majority of the CS to them. By all means Mr or Mrs Jungler/Mid/Top take a CS or two if you got a kill or blew a flash. You probably missed some farm when you roamed and I understand the need to make some of that up.
But don't be the
Lee Sin that comes in and uses
Tempest on the wave and then a
Tiamat proc to kill the entire wave. Use Tempest to get the wave low and get 1 or 2 CS and then let your ADC have the rest.
Don't be the Karma support that kills off the caster minions with a
Mantra empowered
Inner Flame. Inner Flame by itself would leave the caster at low enough health that your ADC can quickly take them out with an AA or two at most.
ADC is an arms race and some ADCs just aren't relevant until they hit certain item spikes. Every piece of gold they get is therefore important to them and your team.
You are shooting your team in the foot by not helping your ADC maximize their farm and setting up dumb situations where your ADC is in Bot lane trying to farm up to finish X item while the rest of you are trying to take an objective. That means your ADC's range and DPS isn't available for taking the objective and potentially exposes your ADC to being ganked by sneaky assassin types.
And really just as a general principle, if one or more of your party is underfarmed, when there are opportunities to farm let the underfarmed person get it, unless someone on your team will hit a major item spike with that farm.
E.g. if there is a giant wave threatening your Top lane inner turret, send your underfarmed laner to clear it while the rest of your team does a holding action.*
You should be hitting Tab once in a while to see what your lane opponents are buying already. Take it a step further and take the time to get an impression on how your teammates are doing. Their ADC has completed a third item and your ADC is still on their second with just pieces of the third? Might not be a good time to pick a fight unless you manage to pick off their ADC.
I had a situation last night where I was sitting at 105 farm after we took the Bot outer tower and were trying to decide if we wanted to take the Bot outer tower. The situation didn't call for being hurried. After three minion waves I had a sum total of 108 farm because our jungler and mid were fragging the waves. I finished that game with the highest farm in the game only because I sat in base killing off waves of super minions after we lost two inhibitors and I had to prioritize
Last Whisper over
Bloodthirster to deal with the supers. At that point I had enough damage to pull off a triple kill that saved the Bot Outer tower and inhibitor, but it was too little too late.
