This is legit. On some champs you don't even have to buy sorcerer's shoes. Just get
Luden's Tempest and
Aether Wisp. That will give you the move speed of level 2 boots with way more damage. Then get deathcap and zhonya and upgrade the aether wisp for even more move speed later. You can even stack ludens echo to ride on roller skates if you so please.

Thanks to Ubnoxius for this sig!

In terms of power spikes,

If you go
Aether Wisp it's only 800 gold. The move speed is about the same as
Boots but even with only 30 ap you will be dealing much more early damage than if you had rushed
Sorcerer's Shoes which rushing is not recommend on most ap carries anyway.
Usually you will get level 2 boots after you get your first ability power item (having sat on level 1 boots if you needed them) so that after you have ability power the magic penetration has effectiveness. By rushing
Luden's Tempest and a second
Aether Wisp you basically skip the need to spend gold on boots item all together and go strait to lots of ability power and still have the level 2 boots mobility.
It is not hard to go
Aether Wisp into
Luden's Tempest early game. The 30 ability power and 5% move speed is enough on lots of champions to secure kills and assists and to return to lane and farm safely after having to go back. The path to
Luden's Tempest is very effective because it has a
Aether Wisp and a
Needlessly Large Rod. Both items give decent ability power for their cost.
The late game scaling is insane. I am doing this with
Kennen and most of the time I only end up with
Luden's Tempest x2 and
Rabadon's Deathcap but I have around 500 ap by 30 minutes into the game and room for 3 more items!
Also the option of buying
Boots at any time and moving nearly as fast as someone with a
Trinity Force makes this path very flexible.
The path would be something like
Amplifying Tome>>
Aether Wisp>>
Needlessly Large Rod>>
Luden's Tempest>>
Aether Wisp#2>>
Rabadon's Deathcap (no boots)

Personally, I don't get penetration boots simply because Diana is a lot more scary (and a lot more deadly) with maximum cooldown reduction.
Crescent Strike maxed out is insanely low with full CDR, and you can outperform most other players just by
Crescent Strikeing them, popping
Pale Cascade and then immediately
Lunar Rushing only to
Crescent Strike them again right after. The fantastically high AP you have end-build lets you even do in tanks if you so please.
Personally, I'm in love with scaling runes. Everyone seems to prefer attack damage runes on
Diana, and while I see the appeal, you win more exchanges just by hitting hard instead of relying on autoattacks. Oh, I see, people still consider
Diana a fighter, but she's so meant to be an assassin. This build can 100-0 an enemy so quick it's ridiculous.
In any case, the build itself always carries games, no matter how behind you are, once you get to max build, you can make game-changing plays with it.
The reason I rush
Luden's Tempest is for the combinative AP and mobility - it helps you stay important early-mid game, until you've gotten your other items in order. Of course, we always start with the machete, but the very next item should be
Luden's Tempest. After that, you get those
Ionian Boots of Lucidity for the CDR and more mobility.
Rabadon's Deathcap should be next because it's the most AP you could get for a next item. Then you go for
Lich Bane for more AP and mobility, then finally you get a
Zhonya's Hourglass. Now, I understand the real squish value this leaves you with, but of course you have to realize your limits and play differently because it's a different beast entirely.
Also, the reason I get hp regen runes instead of armor is because it helps with later parts of the game rather than armor which seems to only help me on my first clears.
Just wanna remind you guys that full build, your
Crescent Strike hits for half (or more if you're ahead) hp on most every champ that isn't a tank. It's insane.

If you build
Luden's Tempest then you can't build a defensive item unless it also grants ability power
Zhonya's Hourglass/[athene's unholy grail]]. I don't see why people play
Diana as an assassin. I think she's an incredibly effective AP bruiser who has huge burst and can pretty tanky if played right. Can someone explain to me why all of the
Diana's I've been seeing have been building
Luden's Tempest. I know it gives you chase potential and works well with your powerspike (maxed out cresent strike + good ap ratio) e.t.c. but I just don't see the benefits over a more tanky sustained DPS AP build for her.
Also wouldn't
Nashor's Tooth be better than
Ionian Boots of Lucidity since tooth gives more CDR and you can then build boots of
Sorcerer's Shoes?
Thanks.

Also wouldn't

I just got a pentakill today with jungle carry

Now, why do I not build

Keep in mind that if you have enough AP, the enemy won't be alive long enough to react. Use the 3-second surprise to kill them. After your 3rd or fourth kill you can just roam around, picking off half or lower champs with Q+R+R or even Just W+R.

Why get rabadon's as fourth item? Because the 120 AP is the most you can get, on TOP of it already giving you a 30% boost on what you already have. Some would say it's pretty gratuitous to have so much AP, but I like to bust tanks as well, and penetration can only go so far.
Few items give AP and mobility, so

We finish off with

Now, it seems fragile, but you have to adjust your playstyle with its glass-cannon like infrastructure.
-Don't get caught out.
-Do not pre-6 gank unless it's a really really easy kill. rush yourself to 6, because that's when the fun begins.
-Wait for the right moments.
-Single them out. You can take every single one of them by themselves, as long as you're quick.
-Exploit the jungle, always.
-Get the dragon when the enemy jungle is dead, and/or do the first dragon -alone- at 6+. When people go missing mid-bot, the enemy team will almost always check the dragon.
-Stay out of bushes near frequently warded points. Sit just outside of the bush, then go in when the time is right. If you're caught, run.
-Don't counterjungle unless you can fight them -easily-.
-You're very fast and hard to peel. Use this to your advantage.
-Don't chase (for more than a few seconds). Adjust your judgement based on your vision of enemies.
-Tower dive champs who can't punish you for doing so.
-Be a damn ghost.
-Most importantly, stay away from CC.
For me,
Luden's Tempest is not really viable with Diana.
My rush item :
Skirmisher's Sabre - Runeglaive and
Nashor's Tooth.
Late game I sell
Skirmisher's Sabre - Runeglaive for
Lich Bane.
So :
Nashor's Tooth
Ionian Boots of Lucidity
Zhonya's Hourglass
Rabadon's Deathcap
Lich Bane
+ Situational item (
Abyssal Mask,
Void Staff,
Rylai's Crystal Scepter,
Guardian Angel)
Diana have to get 40% CDr,
Lich Bane,
Zhonya's Hourglass and
Rabadon's Deathcap.
So can't take
Luden's Tempest.
I create a guide for Diana. I explained all of this in there :
