You'll probably want a ROM with update functionality built in, because if you root you'll have to manually update to future Android versions, which can be a pain.
Cyanogenmod is probably a safe bet.
Then there's SlimROM if you want something light on resources. It should lend itself to slightly better battery life and performance.
Also, you got an N4?

Why not just flash a ROM with app ops (permission options) built in?
Or if you're lazy and have lots of money laying around you could buy the phone that the video was kind of an advertisement for:

The hardware isn't great for the price, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't get any safer than that.
