Hey there, I love your guide first of all but I have quite a few questions generally on runes, builds and such.

First of all for summoner spells, is it viable in your opinion to go Flashless and only go with and as has many jumps and dashes to get outta situations, I Understand it may be like where after she uses her Ferromancy she's kinda dead besides 's E. Also I saw Hylissang use it and questioned it.

Secondly, is there a secondary tree support can use. Like for example would and work with a Build or a Build. Or would it be better to stick to or .

To your first question, yes it's possible, but highly matchup dependent. Facing something that can cancel your dashes like with his fling or even any CC champion makes it way harder to play without . Also you weaken your own 'all-in'-engages like + or other combinations.

You name it. If you want to use or you can take them, but you'll definetly have a weaker lane than with or runes. It doesn't really matter for the whole game and just depends on your own liking, but aswell as have the most useful and also the best laning siderunes.

Awesome guide, and thank you for writing it, but I have a few questions. A while ago when I picked up Rakan I read (more like skimmed lol) this guide, it said something along the lines of, "Tanky build". Currently, the first build in this guide is called, "Tanky - Utility - Agressive". I'm curious about what you mean by that. He doesn't really have a lot of health, and often times when I look at my ADC I often see them actually having more health, armor, and/or MR than I do. So when you say 'tanky,' do you mean this build is more tanky than other builds? Or do you mean, somehow, that he can be an actual tank?
Besides that, this is quite the guide. When I first tried him out months ago I didn't like him much. But I really liked his character as a whole, so I was like, "Man I just really wanna play Rakan. How they heck can I get good?" I may not be good yet, but this has definitely set me on the right path. Great guide :D

First of all thank you very much for all the nice words!
You just noticed a point that I already thought about in the ist few days while reworking and editing the guide. I called the item build “Tanky - Utility - Aggressive” because those are the three possibilities you have to build. You can play as a full tank Rakan to protect your ADC, use items like Iceborn Gauntlet and Righteous Glory for example, also you probably max battle dance or grand entrance first instead of gleaming quill, because you won’t heal/poke that much. The other option would be a poke and aggressive item build with AP/Sorcery runes (Summon Aery), the focus on your Q and more use of ability power with Ardent Censer, spellthiefs edge as a starter item or maybe even liandrys mask [This is not a full AP build, it’s still an AP-Support build]. And lastly there is the utility item set with a Compton action of both. Focusing your whole possibilities on healing and shielding as well as movement speed and quick engages. You could add a fourth itembuild only for movement speed but I kept it to these three. The items i presented on top of the guide are the ones I recommend using as an early/first times Rakan player. More advanced players will more likely adapt to the play style of their enemies and the matchup compositions and change their itembuild and runes to full tank ones or full aggressive ones. As you just mentioned in the beginning it confused you and I wasn’t able to think about a proper idea of informing the reader about those three possibilities with the itembuild presented on top of the guide. Probably I’ll try to add those just like the Full AP part to show the reader what his possibilities to adapt are.

One thing that confuses me about your comment is how your ADC is able to have more health than you. After finishing your support/ward item this should not be the case. If you meant the early beginning of the game, this can happen with not choosing resolve runes at all and high magic resist and/or armor would only be provided if you choose to go full tank. Tanky is meant in the way, that he has around 3000 hp with an utility build that focuses on his heal and shield abilities. Therefore it doesn’t matter which type of damage you receive, you’ll always have enough to engage quickly and still not die.

You're probably right about the ADC-having-more-health-than-Rakan thing. I only checked early game. Like levels one or two, as it wasn't on my mind often. I heard several people saying the words, "Rakan," and, "Tank," together so I looked at his health and just kinda glossed over it. Next game I play, I'll pay attention to this.

Also, I would like to ask one more question. In the guide it goes into some pretty detailed reasons on what to build, what not to build, when to build items, and so forth. The same with runes, you explained which runes are best suited to Rakan. Which I'd like to mention that was not only helpful with Rakan, but also made me think about other runes I may have been using on other champions. But at the same time, I'm a little hazy on the early game. I play Morgana and Zyra a bit in my games and it seems pretty straight forward what to do with them in the early game. Rakan, on the other hand, I can't really figure out what to do with him. At first, I thought it was probably a great idea to poke with my q. But by the time I see a time to engage I've run low on mana. Then eventually the enemy duo engages and I don't have enough mana to do much for my ADC. So do you think it's more beneficial to use gleaming quill only when I know I can hit someone, or should I be trying for every chance I get to land a quill? In the early game so far, I've been trying to play passively and occasionally land his q. But it feels like I'm doing something wrong. It feels like I could be spending that time doing something important rather than just standing around.

Good question, in my opinion this depends on the matchup. That's why I just reworked the matchup section on top of the guide. One thing to mention before, I'd not use gleaming quill when you and your ADC have full hp. First level the Q and annoy them every time I'm able to. But you have to keep an eye on your mana. Only use your Q if you have more than half of your mana. The other half I'd always save to protect your adc with battle dance or to knock the enemies up if they start to chase. When you have an easy lane, e.g. a braum that can't really do anything against you as support, I'd try to poke the hell out of them, but then with Sorcery Runes and some that give you Mana or empower your abilities at least. The more point and click stuns the tankier you have to build. I do those maths always, I calculate how much mana i need to do a e+w+e combo to be able to disengage with my ADC and protect him. The good thing are your mana coins, if you see that one dropped you can have like another stack for a Q if you know what i mean. I personally do it like that because of the problems you just mentioned. Sometimes it's better to focus completely on your Q and poke as much as possible regardless of your mana if you have a super mobile ADC that can protect himself or the enemies have terrible engage champions. So all in all I'd say you should save 1/2 of your mana in the early game for possible ganks or enemie engages, except they got bad compositions.

One last thing to mention is that battle dance will be and unnecessary waste of mana if you try to protect your ADC for tiny trades. This abilitie just costs a lot and you should only use it if you decided to go full utility support with mana regen and bonus heal and shield power in your build. Don't just use it randomly.

I'm back, once again! I can definitely say I've improved at Rakan since reading this. :D Though I guess now I have even more questions.

A mistake I keep having is not knowing when and when not to engage, and what to engage. Several times now I've felt like I had a good opportunity to R + W, but only to find myself dead a couple seconds later. At first I thought my goal during team fights was to just hop in and knock up the back line, but a lot of the times my team mates won't or simply can't make it back there as well. I've been using E + E + R + W most of the time. Should I be using a different combo? Or maybe I'm just engaging at the wrong time?

As you describe this it seems for me that you forget to disengage? The Combo would be to engage with R + E + (maybe Flash) + W + E. With the last E you would go back to your ADC or the tank that peels and you are safe. Heal from the backline with your Q and if you did not choose to build full tank better try to disengage as fast as possible. Unfortunately i can't tell you if you engage at the wrong times, you just have to focus with which teammate you want fight together. Is it your ADC? Or ist it the Jungler? And if it's possible for them to fight the opponent you want to face. Is it a tank or someone squishy that can easily be killed? If you still keep getting killed instantly try to adapt the itembuild to your likings! Maybe a or ?

How are you utilizing Flashtraption? So far I can't really think of many situations where using it has really been that useful. Maybe I'm just not seeing the potential in it. I mean, it takes two seconds to use and it doesn't exactly move you THAT far.

Sorry for the late answer, I'm writing my high school graduation exams in germany atm so I don't really have that much time.

Anyways, I made a little YouTube Video to show you how I personally use . There are still lots of other ways and you have to be careful if you try to engage over the enemy jungles wall. Don't forget to build and ward a lot aswell as using while trying to use out of the bush.

So far after reading the guide, coming back to look at potential updates, coming back for questions, and playing normals a bunch, I can now an A pretty frequently with the occasional S- and B+. You and you're guide are extremely helpful, so again, thanks for writing it. :D
