Why are old guides allowed to be at the top of a champion's guide? Why are guides from January allowed to be at the top when there's as fresh as roadkill in Arizona?

What makes much more sense is to have guides only show up if they're updated to within the current "big patch", since Riot has moved to a system of one large patch every month, and smaller patches within to fine tune.

The current system seems really bad rn, and you're rewarding lazy guide authors.

2 solutions I can suggest :
1) Choosing the "most updated" option in guide selection
2) Send a PM to the guide author or leave a comment to show someone is interested by an update of it. Many guides, especially the great ones, require a tremendous amount of time and efforts to write and keep updated, with no positive sign of appreciation from readers at least from time to time, some may lose the motivation to keep doing it.

Beyond, this thread rings a bell to several similar thoughts I had recently.

I am afraid the main reason may be the lack of "not lazy" guide authors or gifted new authors to replace old authors having simply stop playing league (therefore creating "ghost guides" kinda)

Another reason may be the new blue essence system. Have you notice how it did slow down A LOT the frequency you can afford new champions ? Now you have lots of nice extra stuff like skins, wards or emotes for free (which was not the case before) but still, less champions you can get to play therefore less champions you could be good enough to write a guide leading to less guides per champion.

Add also an increasing numbers of new champions (40 champions initially, how many now ?) and the task at hand is becoming harder and harder, leaving unfortunately some champions with very few guides both good and updated.

Last, I noticed some "community" guides, some great ones, maybe that could be a solution for specific champions having the issue you describe ?

Just some thoughts of course, nothing else than my "feelings" of a recent Mobafire member.

PS : if Riot could stop to change everything all the time it would also help guide authors ;)

I appreciate the suggestion, but choosing most updated doesn't really work, and isn't useful. I don't want the newest guide, I want the guides listed as the best to actually be the best, not be outdated.

And no, its largely in part due to lazy authors. They know that once they get to the top, it won't be going away too easily, and thus don't put in the work to maintain the freshness of the guide. MOBAFire is much too lenient on this, allowing guides from 8.2 to be at or near the top when they should be hidden until they're updated.

I would love some discussion with the design team (heh) of MOBAFire to see why this is as it is.

It's a bit of a catch-22. Imposing a stricter freshness system that prioritizes updated guides would encourage authors to keep their guides updated, but it would also be worse for champions with few or no updated guides. I've brought up this idea to the staff before and the concern is that by hiding / lowering the position of guides not updated recently (say, the past 3 months), some champions may have no "updated" guides at all which looks bad for the site. At the same time, people are less likely to update their guides if they don't need to do so to keep their spot in the listings.

Personally I would be in favor of rewarding guide authors more when they update their guides (by prioritizing them in the listings) in order to encourage more authors to keep their guides up to date, but what I want isn't always what's in the best interests of the site.

It might be something that'll happen some day, can't say for sure.

Lol the Catch-22 logic reference. I understand how complex this must be to find the perfect balance and have the same fear being too strict may lead to some less popular champions having no guide at all then (which seems worse than slightly outdated)

But as for motivational reward system for authors (really) updating their guide, have there been any kind of survey by the past to know the motivations behind Mobafire authors writing a guide ?
Player doing a guide for publicity of his stream ?
Player doing a guide to help others ?
Players doing a guide for "ego" boost ?
Player doing a guide just for grinding ?
Player doing a guide just for himself ?
Other reasons ?
A mix of these reasons ?

Finding reward interesting all these different typologies of guide authors is something that goes maybe beyond Mobafire staff but should be made / formalized by the guide authors community itself ?

PS : can't resist to place this interesting scientific demonstration (better with nice red wine) :
Cheese has holes
More cheese = More holes
More holes = Less cheese

Conclusion :
More cheese = Less cheese (?)

The solution is obviously to melt the cheese (on pizza preferably). :P

I expect that a lot of authors vary as to which of those reasons motivated them to write guides. Personally I started because I had a sudden surge of motivation to get my thoughts on a champion written down and share it with others, and MOBAFire provided a natural platform to do that. Then as my guides grew more popular and I got better at the game, I mostly became concerned with making useful content for people to use.

There have definitely been guide authors who create guides for stream exposure (mostly those who started after MFN Prime was introduced and naturally purchased Prime for the stream embed) and others who make content on YouTube and also have guides here to offer a different format or help people find their content. Some authors even wrote guides to try and win contests or giveaways run by MOBAFire.

I expect most successful guide authors fall into the "ego boost" category, at least a little bit, otherwise people wouldn't care so much about views and rankings. :P

I'd be interested to see a breakdown of why various authors started writing guides, though I'm sure most of them wouldn't respond since a lot of guide authors aren't active on the forums. Feel free to make a thread if you'd like to know that too. I think it'd be best if I didn't post it since it would look a little too formal. When staff members post surveys, people tend to assume there's an ulterior motive (like Riot surveying people about voice chat in order to gauge interest).

Is there a way to get in contact with the team behind the decision? I would love to pick their brains about this choice.

As much as Fatel would like to take credit, these changes were already in the works when this thread was made. As you noted, it would have had to have been done crazily fast if the devs just started a few days ago. Just a happy coincidence.
