This is where my typical build style comes into play, I play as I go, if too much damage is being dealt to me I'll buy survivability earlier than normal, same goes for most other items.

Depends on how much damage you see yourself taking. I'll give you the high elo breakdown, as explained by elementz. You have to firstly consider how much damage you are taking, if you are getting caught, etc. Then you have to consider, relatively of course, how much damage you deal. When buying a survivability item, that the enemy carry could get a damage item, OR they can build more damage and out damage you.. If you don't see yourself in danger, keep building damage, the second you feel threatened get some hp items. Any item that provides hp, even the 450gold on the ruby crystal, might be more than enough to take you past your blood thirster. Btw you don't want a phantom dancer, you want a blood thirster, then a banshees, then possibly a g.a. That is all the damage you would ever need, and the ability to survive.

So you are saying, if you are planning on getting a BV later, on, say, Twitch, you are going to get an early catalyst?
Yes, but I don't mean to rush it.
Get it after IE or something, especially if you're planning on building banshee's way late. You don't want to be mega squishy, but you also don't want to be useless mid-game (which the mana helps with).
I like to go:
Dorans Blade, +3 Movement Boots, Infinity Edge, Zeal (maybe two zeals)
This way you can move fast, do good damage, and you can run away if needed. Does good damage for spamming volley and just frost shotting guys that aren't in melee range.

"Thats a paddlin'"
Thanks for the responses. It is quite situational, as it does depend on their team comp - just sometimes, when I do play a carry, I'm a little conflicted as to whether it's worth it to get a defensive item even though I haven't finished my offensive build, and even though I haven't been dying too much.
Riggsinator: Sorry, this isn't a thread to just discuss Ashe builds, it's a thread about survivability/damage. But don't get Boots of Swiftness, don't stack Zeals, and get some armor penetration. >.>
