Add those things in the guide.
Not hard for you, nor troublesome for the reader.

Still, it would be a good addition.
I would like to have the ability to name the categories myself and to be able to make as many categories as I like (with some limit you'd never reach(like 10 or so)).

I know from experience that there are quite a few users who will look at your item sequence, not read the rest of the guide, and use it/vote based on that item sequence. Like I said, it's misleading.
Or we can do item paths in the build itself, which I think is gonna be implemented soon.
Thanks to TRUeLM, Plastictree, Scrax, Xiaowiriamu, foggy12, JahGFX, jhoijhoi, msrobinson, JEFFY40HANDS, Nyoike, MissMaw, and me :) for the sigs!

This.
For some tanks, "core" is nothing more than a term used to describe armor, MR, and health. Tanks have to be extremely flexible in what they build - MUCH more than any other type of champion in the game. In that respect, the best system would be something that's been suggested before:
Optional labels for each item with arrows branching out, and the ability to add as many arrows as you want. With each item or item path, you could briefly describe the reasoning behind it.

I think I've suggested before of allowing guide-writers to add tool-tips to the items in the sequence.
It would appear under normal tool-tip, and be limited to about 300~500 digits/text. Just enough for you to give a quick explanation of why you pick it. And more then enough so that you can also say "See Guide Description for details"
This could be expanded to summoner spells, mastery points, and skill-sequence too.

In the guide editor, have 3 sections. The first is "Starting Item(s)". Here, you put your starting items. The second is "Core" and the third is "situational". In each of these sections, there should be a button that says, "add an option". For example, if I'm making my starting items, I enter boots 3 pot, click add an option, and enter a doran's ring. Now the guide shows boots 3 pot OR doran's ring.
This is my suggestion, do it whatever way you want, but please change it. For those people who just briefly glimpse over a guide and build order, the item sequence section can be misleading and can often times not portray what the author wants it to.
On a side note, there should be an image for more than one potion, ward, etc... It just looks better.
