It's an amazing item on any tank, probably one of the best tank items in the game. However just like any other tank item, you want to consider, is the enemy team full of one type of damage or the other? Are they all burst damage mages and so my Aegis won't really support my team a whole lot? Are they all carries that excel in early game but fall off in late game?
Stuff like that can help you reach a decision whether or not you want to buy Aegis. Sometimes it's better to go with two items (1 armor, 1 MR) rather then take a more balanced route, but sometimes when you have carries from both sides of the spectrum that do damage early game it's necessary to rush an Aegis. Examples of that would be say, Akali, Jax, Sivir, Udyr etc. It's also a really great item if your offtanking and run mr/lvl and ar/lvl runes since you can then generally round out your resistances at 200 with just Aegis and GA, and then you can focus on building health/damage.

To be honest, it's more of a support item...
Tanks should only take this if they're jungling (since it builds from cloth armour, and HoGs don't any more), otherwise supports should have it.

It's needed when your allies are mostly building glass-cannon builds.
It's a good item to have for team fights.
Supports can buy it, but tanks can too. Just depends on who can flex their build more.
Aegis is a great item on
Nasus too.

It's useful on tanks too, not just supports. It can be useful to fill in some resistances and health when you already have a lot of cc, don't need armor/ms etc etc.
It's pretty good on Jarvan.
It's really not good on Jarvan.
Anyone that builds pretty much full tank (such as Jarvan) other than one or two DPS items is in the middle of the battle every fight, or at least, should be. He can't suffer resistances for a few bonus resistances for the squishies or he'll be made of paper in team fights. If they need resistances, buying a mere Chain Vest and Negatron will give you more resistances for a (much) lower price.
Tanks only have it barely viable because it's the only item that is pretty cheap and builds from Cloth Armour, the only other tank item (iirc) that has cloth armour in is Randuin's, and it doesn't build into anything BEFORE that.
Supports have a lot of disposable income. Since they only really buy wards, and don't get enough money to build a full AP item 90% of the time, AND it helps out their entire team and not just themselves, since they shouldn't really be in the fight anyway, it's perfect.

uhm what? With Aegis you get 30 armor and 40 mr + 270 health. (swear to god it was more then that before...), it's roughly equal to a negatron + chain vest considering you also get 270 health for 500 gold. It's good as Jarvan since you already have an aoe slow and shield, a knockup and his ult. he deals some nice damage early/mid game and building an aegis won't really slow down your triforce. plus it goes from cloth armor which is nice if your jungling. it's also nice since with proper runes you can hit > 200 resistances with just Aegis, GA and Merc treads as Jarvan. Or you can pay more for a Banshee's + Randuin's combo and have less resistances. Alternatively you could go with FoN + Randuin's and have even less for more.
Indeed, it's a great item, but there's no reason why a tank should build it over a support.
@Nighthawk
You forget the other effects the items you mentioned have. Randuin's has it's slow, FoN has it's regen and speed, Banshee's has the indispensable shield. If you just NEEDED pure resistances you'd go for the chain vest and negatron, most value for money resistances going - but it's not just about that. Health is negligible. There's a reason nobody ever builds Warmog's unless they're going atmogs. It is good on a jungler, but I've already mentioned that.
Also, last time I checked, FoN has (much) higher MR than Banshee's...
So, FoN + Randuin's > Banshee's + Randuin's AS FAR AS RESISTANCES ARE CONCERNED
I'm not going to double check the stats when you got the fundamentals wrong.

I mostly play tank, and though I understand the importance of rushing goldper10 items I mostly spec my tank runepage with 3 gold per 10 quints. Well never mind whether I focus philo/HoG first or not. My bigger question is this:
Is it prudent to rush AotL? I love the overall effects it has, and if I am not solo lane it also gives back to my fellow champions. Sure, for the pure cash I can get more pure Mr/Ar, but that would keep only me alive longer. The additional resistances seems important for the rest of the team early game, more important than later because that is when they should be counterbuilding anyhow.
I somehow feel that this overall-item is good to have before you can see which enemy champ is the real itch and needs the counter.
What is the overall thought on this item? I rarely see it in builds actually.
Maybe I am thinking wrong when I try to be a tank with support qualities, like jarvans flag toss and shield, or Alis heal...?
