The logo is going to be a visual representation of the party. It needs to reflect the parties attitude goals etc. It is going to be a public icon once the party gets support. I can help you with the typography. However the design will need to be an original, seeing as it is political it ideally needs to be somewhat simple and professional. Meaning a standard ps sig with c4ds won't necessarily be the way to go. You'll need to actually draw an emblem or design scan it in and go from there.
The reason I bring these things up is because I plan on minoring in buisness. A political party is very similar to a business in terms of public face. You'll need to cater to a demographic that would support the party. So a good place to start is determining the goals the party has. Once you have a list of goals then you build an image that reflects it. You'll need a design for banners, posters, and business cards.
Once you come up with an idea let me know and I'll try to help. This is a job different from making a sig for one person. You're making a face to be identified by multitudes of people.

+rep for Jeffy's post. A mountain of good knowledge there ^^ Once you have the theme set (style, audience, position in politics) come back and tell us, and we can give some more ideas.

Ohhh and additional information, this is more pointed at a business type design, but the TEXT will actually be just as important as the image (if you use/make one) for the logo. How you incorporate an image with the text can make or break the impact you wish to leave on people.
Examples:
The Dell logo is extremely simple and the text used IS distinctive. You know it's a Dell when you see it.
Apple's brand is recognized from a simple (almost as simple as you can get really) image. When you see it you know it.
Your task will be to create an image/text that does the exact same thing, sounds easier than it is. I don't know what copy right laws are outside of the US, but you'll (more or less your friends) probably need to speak with a patent/copyright attorney.
If you wish for the party to be recognized by T.P. for instance there could be any number of companies/businesses with a similar heading which means you have to work that much harder to be distinctive.
However within the US, if two companies start up with the same initials as long as they are in different fields (let's say one is a dry cleaners and the other is a restaurant chain) there is no infringement for either one because they are not competing within the same field....
Anyway that last bit of info pertains primarily to BUSINESS not politics, but a similar approach is needed to create a successful logo.
