I can never remember which title FF2 was in Japan so I'm gonna use USA titles.
FF2 and FF3, beyond godlike. At 7 I started to lose interest and 8 killed that interest entirely. 9 tried hard to revive it but failed, and 10 was the point of no return. Ever.
Chrono trigger literally bored me to death. I literally died.

I've never played any of the FF games.. Do you need to know all of the story of FF before they are worth playing?
No they are not related in any real way to be honest.

FF Tactics you mean?
It's okay but it's SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO easy.
There's like one or two fight and then they give you these godmode characters that can solo the last boss. Wtf?

I actually got stuck because I overleveled my characters so much that some of the "random" story fights where you face people leveled to you were just impossible, and thus I never finished the game.
Tactics Ogre is another really good one, but Atlus made it, not Square.

Yeah that could be an issue sometimes...
TO was better than FFT imho, but too easy to break the game.

Duff uses the op characters >.<
make all your own characters at the start, and use them throughout the game. It's still pretty easy though, just not quite 'oh I killed more than half their team on my 1st turn np'
If ya like fft, you should play Disgaea: Hour of Darkness if you haven't already, it's a very, very good game, also, you can literally grind to level 9999, and have 20 000 000+ health :D
american ff2 is Jff4 and american ff3 is Jff6
what's wrong with ff7? it was a lot different than the ones before it sure, but it was still great. I've never gotten far into 8 because I got bored, and I played ff9 til it pulled a ff4 and made the last boss ridiculously harder than the rest of the game. 9 was pretty bad though, I didn't really enjoy it, just kept telling myself that it would get better, but it didn't :/
Chrono Trigger has kinda a boring start, but is an incredible game, and you made me sadface by not liking it :/
