There are two common strategies for almost every lane at the moment.
Top Lane: You have bruisers top lane, and you have mages that are good with spell vamp.
Good Bruisers:
Cho'Gath,
Olaf,
Udyr,
Irelia,
Gangplank,
Lee Sin,
Malphite,
Nasus,
Nidalee,
Renekton,
Singed,
Teemo,
Trundle,
Tryndamere,
Riven,
Volibear,
Warwick,
Wukong,
Yorick,
Jax and
Garen.
Good Mages:
Ryze,
Swain,
Rumble,
Kennen,
Soraka,
Morgana,
Galio,
Mordekaiser
Mid Lane: Mid lane can either be a mage, or a counter to the enemy mage.
Good Mages:
Annie,
Ryze,
Morgana,
Gragas,
Xerath,
Karthus,
Lux,
Kassadin,
LeBlanc,
Maokai,
Orianna,
Sion,
Twisted Fate,
Veigar,
Vladimir,
Zilean,
Brand,
Anivia,
Heimerdinger and
Akali.
Some Counters:
Talon counters most mids,
Garen counters melee mids like Kassadin and Gragas,
Akali counters squishy mids like karthus,
Cho'Gath counters people like karthus, or Fiddlesticks, and
Karma counters mids without kill potential.
Bottom Lane: Bottom lane is going to be some sort of Ranged AD champion, and some sort of support.
There is a HUGE list of viable supports.
Make your AD carry someone who is going to be able to do big damage late game, and make your support someone who can assist the AD champion in getting to late game, either by applying kill pressure, or denying kill pressure.
Junglers: In the jungle, you have farmers and gankers.
Some Strong farmers:
Cho'Gath,
Riven,
Shyvana,
Skarner,
Annie
Some Strong Gankers:
Nocturne,
Shaco,
Rammus,
Skarner,
Pantheon
Farming junglers are better if your lanes are designed to win (You picked good counters).
Ganking junglers are better if you picked strong characters, but will probably lose lanes (Got counter picked.)
This is MY understanding of the game in it's current form :p

Tri lane for life.
+Rep Tem for the great informative post. Seems pretty accurate to me.
A couple questions:
1. Why is
Maokai listed as a good mage, but not a good bruiser for top lane. He's also one of the best ganking junglers in the game (though I realize you didn't list all of them).
2.
Annie is a strong farming jungler? O.O

Cass can mid too right? and for jungler , is lee-sin a good choice?
What would be your optimal best 5 team. :)
Mine would be Tryndamere top, Cass or Kass mid, Jungler Lee-Sin , Sona & Caitlyn/Vayne/Ashe bottom
Would this team be good?
Wukong top, Morgana mid, Graves and Sona bot and Amumu Jungle.
5 AoE ulties. Wukong knock up, Morgana stun, Graves AoE damage, Sona stun, Amumu suppress. GG

Don't hate, it's too big a burden to bear.

Nitpicking, but Amumu's ultimate is not a suppress.

Yea I know but how does it actually categorize? It isn't stun, it isn't suppress,...

Things turn out best for the people who make the best out of the way things turn out.
