Title basically says it all. There should be a button that allows you to thank a persson for their post. It's annoying to post a whole message to say thanks to someone, It pushes other topics down. If we just ahd that button, tehre would be no more need for needless posting.

It's easy, same as rep. You just click on it and you've sent a thank you. I like the way hupit has done it, where the thankyou shows at the bottom of the post with "The following user(s) said Thank You: [insert names here]"
thanks Hogopogo for the banner :D

I have seen this on other sites and I like the idea :) Will give it some thought. We could just show who gave +Rep for a comment but, some people might prefer the option of anonymity.

Most forums I go to have a [This] button and it shows all the people underneath the post who clicked on the "this" button. It's pretty awesome and yeah, I fully support that idea. It honestly marks out useful posts inside of a crowded forum topic.

I think post upvoting and downvoting is a perfectly fine system. I actually liked the way they did it on the SCII forums (though the people there are horrible by comparison). Highly upvoted comments would glow brighter and downvoted comments would become dimmer until they were eventually hidden with a spoiler.

Of course a simple counter showing how many +Reps a specific post has received would be cool as well, even if it doesn't show who gave it.

I'm sure Matt will figure out the method that's best for the site. It's a great topic to bring up though.
Thanks to Minho for the sig!

@psiguard

sounds pretty good, this glowing idea. With the +rep though, it would cause too many complications. There will be many times you wish to thank someone, but very few you wish to +rep someone. Also, you would have to click the this button to see it wouldn't you? The average person only glances over a post, so they will not click that button. It would be preferable to have it obviously showing.
thanks Hogopogo for the banner :D

No, you wouldn't have to click anything to see it. There would just be a +5 or something somewhere on the post. Also, I don't think +Rep should be too much more rare than a thank you. If someone asks a question and you give them a detailed answer, they probably deserve a Rep for that. If someone performs a service like making a sig or reviewing a guide, you can Rep them for that as well.

Might not be the best system. Just an idea. Like I said, I liked the glowing post thing.
Thanks to Jovy for the sig!

I imagine it would be a pain in the *** to code something like that.

^true, but I think the negatives are pretty limited.

Worst case scenarios:
-People upvote bad posts and create misconceptions.
-People downvote good posts, causing them to be hidden (this is only if he implements downvoting).

But we gain the ability to highlight good posts, which is a plus for both the readers and the author of the post.

The only scenario that really might hurt the site would be:
-Upvoting posts replaces +Rep as a form of reward (at least partially), so Rep is harder to earn.

Hey, it won't be that bad. People are intelligent and reasonable and will vote sensibly. I mean, just look at the top rated guides, right?

Yeah we're all doomed.

This wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
