Kat has no effects that will continue while she is under the effects of Zhonya's active. Her passive makes it unlikely that the time spent under the effects of Zhonya's active are going to matter for most of her cooldowns if her team is winning a teamfight, Zhonya's active is very unlikely to save her if her team is losing a teamfight (due to her position). Again, the armor and AP are nice, but I see no reason why the active is worth getting.
you could say the same thing of Guardian Angel. Essentially for these two items there is no way to put a tangible value on them because it's all in how the item is used. Zhonya's Hourglass can kill you but it can also save you. I don't like to deal with hypotheticals such as your proposed "unlikely time spent under zhonya's is going to save her" nonsense. Because the title of this thread is 'optimizing a new build for Kat' I think we have to assume actives are used in the most optimal way, just as we would assume Hextech Gunblade and Deathfire Grasp are going to be used in the most optimal way.
Thanks for the Signature MissMaw!
See, that's exactly the problem. The "optimal" usage for Zhonya's, on Kat, is situational. It's not an item that you're going to want every game. It's not an item that's always useful in every teamfight. Honestly, Zhonya's on Kat feels about as useful as Zhonya's on Kassadin. Can it be good? Sure, sometimes. Is it so massively good that you should buy it every game all the time no exceptions ever? No, not even close. The active can be useful, but isn't always. Kat isn't Morgana or Kennen, on whom the active is obviously synergistic, and on whom the active is useful basically every teamfight when combined with their ultimates. Kat has no such synergies with the item, which is why I'm arguing against it as core.

1. Ryilais should always be, on any caster a situational pick
2. Mercury threads are better if there's lot of long duration CC, wich is pretty common nowdays
3. Abyssal should be a core item before even deathcap
4. I suggest rushing revolver, completing boots, do abyssal, then start building the rest.

1. I can't imagine playing someone like Morde, Vlad or Cass without rylai's, but for Kat I agree it's situational.
2. I'll get them if I have to. I would rather not have to, obviously.
3. :O I love Abyssal but I figured other items might be a priority if you want Void later.
4. That's what I've been doing almost every game so far.
Thanks for your input.
