Means when you press a button you cast your spell instantly at where your mouse is instead of having to aim and click it (like how
Lay Waste works by default). You should use it on almost everything since it saves on reaction time. The only thing I don't smartcast is stuff like
Ace in the Hole or finales funkeln because I like checking the range.

you should definately use it.
Go to keybindings and bind smartcast QWER spell to whichever you want it to be on.
I use quite a weird key setup but here it is:
1234 Normal cast spells
QWER smartcast spells
56 smartcast item 1 and 2
T cast item 3(i use this one for warding n stuffs)
DF smartcast summoner spells
I like having the cast fields for checking the range of my abilities especially when i play assasins where you have to be quick and precise on your fingers. Smartcasting is equally useful for just smoothing out your play and reducing your reaction time.

Thanks that was very helpful ^^
Any reason you don't smartcast those abilities?

Lots of thanks to the amazing Nameless Bard for this epic signature!
Mostly because 1) they're very long range and I like to be able to check it exactly and 2) they're ultimates so you rarely need to cast them anyway and when you do you usually have time to line them up.
Ace in the Hole in particular should never be used whilst you're fighting anyway.

What I recommend: When you first play any champion, do not smartcast so you can learn the range of the abilities. Once you've got the hang of it, turn smartcasting on. The major pro here is that you can cast spells faster.
I also smartcast abilities such as Finales Funkeln (awesome name should remain forever, Final Spark is a super dumb name) so I can cast it fast in a short range combo but I keep the non-smartcast on T in case I want to check the range.

Ah ok that makes sense. Though so far I haven't really played any champs with super long range.

I tried smartcasting on Lee Sin; seemed easy enough. I do indeed have some slight issues regarding his range on Sonic Wave and Safeguard.
