Itemization

So basically I wanted to cover warding, but I wanted to cover GP10's and sightstones because the sighstone is a key element in warding. Thats why I'm going to explain some itemization first :)

Sightstone vs Gp10
Let's start with a comparison in the amount of gold returned on your investment. The Sightstone gives 2 wards in 3 minutes, which equals 50 gold per minute. A Ruby Sightstone comes down to 75 gold per minute and a philosopher's stone is 30 gold per minute. When not looking at the stats the item gives, the sightstone will take you 19 minutes to completely pay for itself, ruby sightstone is about 21 minutes and the philo stone is just over 23 minutes.

This makes sightstone the most beneficial item to rush, especially when you consider that health is the best defensive stat in the early game. Because a kage's lucky pick only gives 4 gp/10, bringing it at 24 gold per minute while being more expensive than a philo stone, this item is a NOT BUY.

I only go for philo stone against poke lanes, but only after having the sightstone in place - this is because against poke lanes you will not need the defensive stats against all-out damage, in fear of your own life, but rather stats that make the laning less painful (health regen and optionally the mana regen to keep spamming heals)

Because of the gold efficiency, I usually tend to grab sightstone but not immediately build it into a ruby sightstone, because this is a rather expensive item, and offers only one extra ward - the extra ward is 25 gold per minute which means the extra expense of 600 gold will be earned back in 24 extra minutes - in fact making it the least gold-efficient item to rush overall!

Another really great early game (Get it at your first or second back) item would be the Doran's Shield - this is most likely the most gold-efficient item because for only 475 gold, it gives the most awesome defensive stats and are really good as a squishy support, against kill lanes (who will be likely targetting you) with supports like blitzcrank or leona.

That is why I usually find myself rushing Locket of the Iron Solari first, this item gives pretty much all the stats a support would like, especially the more aggressive ones: health, cdr, armor and hp regen. On top of that the active is a great supportive addition to your teamfights.

Basically, the golden rule for support itemization, is gold efficiency: If the item is not gold-efficient, you should not be building it. Bulwark is generally really expensive (however, it is a really great item and a must-have against 2+ ap teams) and therefore it should preferably be built by your jungler instead of you - you should never be rushing this yourself anyway.

The best boots to get for a support usually depend on the type of support: tanky supports are best off with Mobility Boots or Ninja Tabi. Mercury's Treads are no option for you because you are just to soak damage - these boots are not cost efficient and should only be bought for the tenacity, which you don't need because you don't rely on your damage. A more defensive support will usually go for Ionian Boots of Lucidity or Mobility Boots, even though I usually don't upgrade my Boots till about 30+ minutes into the game.

So, a good example of a build path would be:

Start: 4 green wards, 1 pink ward, 2 potions - optionally leave out 1 green ward for some potions
First buy: some (pink-) wards, ruby crystal
Second: Sightstone
Optionally: philosopher's stone (only when not playing against an aggressive kill-lane and when really making use of the hp and mana regen
Then rush: Boots, Locket of the Iron Solari
Finish Ruby Sightstone
*you should start considering buying oracle around this point*
Next item optionals: Runic Bulwark, Shurelya's Battlesong
