I like Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, but Umineko no Naku Koro Ni basically put me off anime. Elfen Lied was good to watch, if a little weird. The endless eight of Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu probably also put me off.

lol those are pretty intense ones to start with...titan even made me squirm a bit...i recommend cowboy bebop to start with...it's relatively short...has humor, action, and sadness hahaha

Don't trust whomever recommended Sword Art Online to you. That series is all flash, no substance. It's well animated, but pretty much everything else about it is garbage.
How far did you get in Shingeki?
The anime makes a lot of mistakes that the manga does not, but it's still pretty good in my opinion. Feel free to share yours.

I watched them in japanese, no dubs or anything. Subtitles. Ok.
I couldn't help but feel like every single line of dialogue was delivered with an unnecessary amount of angst. Like even for small, none serious things, characters were practically yelling, and I get that maybe that's just how people convey emotion in Japanese, but it's annoying to me, and I have seen American dubbed animes do the same thing in English. Basically I find it obnoxious.
As for storyline; Sword Art Online was a fun concept I could see myself getting into, but it's delivery and level of genericness about MMO terms turned me off immediately.
Attack on Titan immediately bored with it's very premise (Walled cities defending from basically giants) and the characters were even more boring. Also the animation (3-D stuff mixed in with 2-D) annoyed me immensely.
