It's just a matter of playstyle, I think. He can still dish out tons of burst, be tanky and mobile as ****.
He has one single melee skill that can be used as mobility, utility (slow) and a
Lich Bane proc to finish people off, dunno what you're talking about when you said 'half of his skills are meleeish'. His Q has long range and does ridiculous damage.
Rod of Ages takes care of his mana problems, but I haven't been using it that much lately.
Tear of the Goddess was somewhat doable on him, but now it sucks.
I've been using him with 14/16/0 masteries, mpen marks, AP quints, MR glyphs and health/lv seals.

His q and ulti is long ranged, his e is meleerange if you go offensive and the offensive traits from w is also to be used melee since it brings ad. That's what I mean with half of the skills.

I once played back where red pot where costing 250 Full AD Gragas start. AD marks and AD Quints combined with offensive masteries, red pot and W. Have like 120 AD at level 1 and deal ****tons of damage with just 1 hit or E, while taking less damage from the enemy.
Why actually the damage of his E reduces, the more targets he hit. I think that should be removed, as if you use that skill, it should also pay off.
