Cudd, you don't have to agree with her, but don't insult her intelligence. She's got a damn good argument, and a hell of a lot of evidence to support it. I'll have to watch the other two videos in the series.

Also, you know what would be freakin' awesome? A Zelda game starring Zelda. Where Zelda spends the entire game wearing Link's hat. Perhaps Link gets kidnapped; the damsel-in-distress trope is really central to Zelda games, so if Zelda's going to star it'd probably have to be gender swapped.

My posts may be long. If this bothers you, don't read them.

^ i am curious what you think baka but her argument seems to weaken to me with her second part.

edit: her third part strengthens a bit. though i did laugh at the absurdity she pointed out...when i should have (as a equality centered person..or so I believe) gotten upset...oops.

ultimately she loses me at the end by her solution...as it is non-original...typical...and ineffective.

I don't even know what the legitimate **** is wrong with you. She is not being sexist or being an out-of-her-mind feminist. She makes very good points and I agree on almost every point because it's just cheap design.

The remakes are a bs point though because that's just pure nostalgia rather than seeing another damsel in distress. Though overall she knows what she's talking about and really makes some spot-on points.

To be fair, I think the Zelda games aren't such an amazing big deal since in some, not all, Zelda isn't the central feature of the game. For example in Twilight Princess she appears as a character who knows what's going on and Link's involvement is completely unrelated to Zelda being held, although I do get her point.

I do think it's slightly sad that opposites aren't mentioned. Metroid Prime and Tomb Raider (although this might not be the greatest example) are examples of games starring a female PC. In the Metroid Prime Trilogy, there are also several Female NPCs who aren't in some state of helplessness. Cortana from the Halo franchise is another example of a Female character who doesn't follow this pattern.

Overall, good video, I'mma watch the other parts.

Didn't Peach in Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door manage to free herself in the moonbase? Of course, she gets damseled again. To refer to what TotalBiscuit said, even if we ignore equality issues, the damsel in distress trope is just tired. It's an unengaging and lazy plot device that holds no intrigue. However, in the thousand year door they manage to add some actual development to the trope with Peach's end-of-chapter attempts at success. Of course, going by the video creator's definition, that wasn't truly a damsel in distress trope as a key part of it is the damsel's inability to escape, which Peach does manage. I'm interested to see what the next parts go onto say.

Oh, Skyward Sword managed to make Zelda somewhat less damsely. From being knocked out the sky to being crystallized, she does manage to get around and lead Link on a merry chase. Of course, she is guided by Impa.

Next parts are definitely interesting, showing modern games who pretty much use the same concept over and over again and alternatives to the classic idea. Overall it is, of course, a little biased but nonetheless very interesting and as a game designer I really enjoy it.

It's not exactly news that Cuddles is a bit of a moron...

She does make a few good points and I don't have much to complain about in this video.
But she is also doing many silly things like ignoring facts where it's convenient for her, drawing conclusions where there's not enough evidence backing her up and most importantly she tends to pigeonhole things that don't necessarily fit her assertions. (i.e: she sees things in black and white when things in actuality are grey)

She's just not somebody I believe you should listen to. I'm sad that she's one of the most prominent voices on this debate.

While there are poor examples, let's see what francise actually did tone down the ridiculousness.. ... is it Tomb Raider? Yes it is! Sure, no doubt she's still sexy but it's far from ridiculous, she looks like a real person.

Yeah, I like her new design. Too bad her character was pretty uninteresting and the story was terrible.
"Blizzard spoke thus; Thou shalt not BM. And the players replied Nay, I shall Play my hand with Lethal already on the board. And so Blizzard sent unto them this Brawl of Yogg, As a lesson for their sins of Pride and Greed, for he is the Prophet of Madness and RNG. On that day, the tavern descended into an era of chaos and darkness, until the weekend passed and everyone forgot all about it. Amen. Book of SMOrc, Verse 20, Chapter 4." - Feam T

Yeah obviously a bit of a black and white view and a lack of positive examples (though the third video presents a few) but it's a good video and especially as a designer it's really neat to watch because she does point out a few more extensive versions of essentially the same trope.

unfortunately this is the bane of most social/political movements. taking a black/white approach or an extremist approach (like the revived tea party conservative movement in the states) just doesn't fly...it becomes biased and fails to see the whole picture....i actually watched some of her previously created vids...she actually seems to tone it down a bit in the videos involving video games...but maybe i am just being optimistic.

Over-sexualisation of women in video games sits fine with me as long as it's not over done, like a women with breasts that resemble huge flowing pillows of flesh - it just looks ridiculous. Technically, a women with breasts that large would not wear the kind of clothing that they are depicted in, AND would have a **** tonne of back pain as a consequence for no support.

I don't mind seeing scantily clad women, as the female body is beautiful and if drawn well, can improve the aesthetic features of the game. Just the same way a male body can be enticing to see. A nice body, whether male or female, is easy on the eyes. I'm not going to get into "but people are perfect just the way they are" - there is a "standard" of appreciated body types, and well developed/endowed females is the ideal design (unless the character is a young child, or obviously "normal" to fit a certain role).

So my stance on female characters looking sexy on screen is fine. I wouldn't expect to see an "ugly" female lead character unless that fits her role in the game.

My problem with the game in question in the review is that only the lead characters are "strong" women, with the NPCs being depicted as girls to be rescued. I haven't played the game, but Total mentioned it repeatedly. In terms of context, wherein fantasy is based on fantastical medieval history - yes, I can accept that there were few women with power, as women in that age had no rights. But game makers don't have to follow exact history. And they clearly didn't with the Amazon woman character - so where are the other Amazon women not shackled to a bed in a seductive pose waiting to be rescued?

tldr: when a female's anatomy looks ridiculous, I don't like it. When it's done well and tastefully/realistically, I'm all for it. When a main female character is given a "good" role, I'm happy. When all NPC females are "damsels waiting to be rescued", I'm not happy.
