Gold is high elo, comparatively. Ask the millions of people stuck in Bronze and Silver, or unranked with a w/l ratio of 1:3 in normal games, or 500+ games of Co-op vs AI.
From my personal experience of seeing screen shots and knowing plenty of people with a rank, if you've got a negative w/l (like 500 wins, 650 loses, for example), you will never be gold unless carried by high elo duo-queuer. If you've got a positive w/l (like 500 wins, 350 losses), you will AT LEAST get to gold. You may think "oh, gold is **** tier elo", but it's not; you have to be competent to get there.
tldr; gold is high elo comparatively. Plat, Diamond and Challenger players just play better, mechanically, in addition to having a wider knowledge base. You can play jungle Soraka as a Challenger and win a game against a "proper" jungler at Gold elo, solely due to better mechanical understanding of the game.

EUW has considerably more players. Interestingly enough, EUW also has less Silver, less Gold, less Plat and less Diamond players but way more bronze players.
I suppose this confirms V4p0r4's theory. More unranked people that get into ranked = more bronze peeps.
Gold is the top 13.5% of ranked players... Which is probably really the top 2% of all players (considering unranked people as silver/bronze). Not bad at all but I'm still not sure about calling it high elo lol. I'm fine with their guides being in the high elo section but not really featured (and that's the way it is atm so GG)
Was waiting for someone to post those lolsummoners links, Thanks :)
Gold is not high elo, really you only start performing well is in platinum. When you watch a platinum player they have learned their champion pool, they know how to play and react, they know how to itemize. However they will have "some" shortfall holding them back (mechanics, game decisions).
Gold Elo games are stomps, due to people not knowing how to reactively play.

Pretty much this. The major difference between plat and gold is that teamfights are played much more carelessly in gold - everyone is doing their own thing. Platinum players have a way better concept of how to teamfight and how to play in a team. Diamond is just decision making I think, I mean, I doubt that there's much mechanical skill difference between diamond and platinum but I can't be too sure obviously.

Cool. I hope I can get to like, Gold I in OCE. Only 1000 Gold I players? Neat. How cool would it be if I was good enough to be Diamond in OCE? :P

Gold this season is like 1200-1400 elo last season. At the actual high level people consider gold to be low elo.
If my team faces a team w/ even 1 gold player on it we feel like its going to be an insta-win. Same goes for a team w/ a few plat players on it.

I always have seen the rankings like this:
Bronze - You have no idea what you're doing.
Silver - You know how to deal damage.
Gold - You know how to trade as well, and you know counterpicks and the right item purchases.
Diamond - You know many game mechanics, and learned how to use some.
Platinum - You know all the game mechanics, and learned a lot how to use them.
Challenger - You can do close to everything right, basically.
Being in Gold is still decent ELO imo. Some people need a lot of time to even barely reach it, either by luck (getting carried) or by skill. I play League of Legends for 6 months now and I get to play with Gold players sometimes, which I'm proud of(dem feels tho). Also don't forget that League of Legends simply takes high skill to play it properly in comparison to other games.

ah, so that's how randomizing signatures works.

If we keep the wages example, the 1% admittedly gets WAY more money than the 2-14%. We're talking like... petrol or any other crazy lucractive industries VS doctors, engineers and so on. Would you really state "Yeeaaaa, doctors clearly arent rich compared to most people, because a handful of industries are getting a bajillion every year"?
Because this is how you sound to me :/
EDIT: Before anyone starts a "yeahButGoldIzBad" conversation on top of my post, I personnally believe belonging in gold leagues doesnt, by any mean, provide you the privilege to believe you are talented at competitive video games. Still, top 10-12% IS high ELO, especially since we can expect most unranked players to be much lower than this.
