I understand your point. I took the liberty to make an example and find similar screenshots of two anime I recently watched:

Serial Experiments Lain - 1998.

Denpa Onna to Seishun Otoko - 2011

How would you compare the art of both of these anime?

Or the most appropriate question would be, can we really compare the art of both of these anime? Serial Experiments lain has been released 13 years before Denpa Onna came out.

Personally, I find Denpa Onna's art to be much better simply because it's more detailed and the color vibrance is more appealing. But again, it's because digital art had 13 years in front of it to improve since the release of SEL, so it doesn't mean SEL's art is bad, it's just ... I will admit the fact that the word "old" comes first to mind, I won't deny that.

But you're totally right, we can't assign a value to the word "old", because "old" does not imply "good" or "bad", it's just "old".

So the real issue here is, should we take into account an anime's release date when we analyze its art?

If we should, then SEL has decent art considering it was released in 1998.

If we shouldn't, then SEL's art is totally bad compared to Denpa Onna.

Hmm, I'm not convinced by my own words lol

We shouldn't. Age has no inherent value and should have no impact on a comparison of value.
So yet again: "To assign value to a word that doesn't in any way indicate actual value is just dumb.".
I think that's signature material even, now that I revisited it.

'totally' is a terrible word for describing something, so I think 'bad' is enough to properly describe it :P

I'm not sure that's a good comparison btw. Seeing as the tone of the two series is completely different. The tone is intentionally brown and boring in SEL.

"I also am Otherkin. Whenever autumn rolls around I can feel my kin-type slowly taking over my body. You must know, I identify as pumpkin. I can control it pretty good most of the time, but when September ends, I just cant hold it in anymore. Whenever Im outside I see my brothers and sisters being chopped into soup, coffee, donuts, cake, drinks, bread - ppl even cut human faces into their skin, making a mockery out of their noble appearance. When I see things like that I cant control my pumpkin urges anymore. My natural instincts kick in. I then sit down motionless, while getting bright orange." - Morgana L

This seems actually quite interesting, I don't know why but the attitude of the maingirl reminds me of the maingirl from Lucifer and ze Biscuit Hammer or how it was called

So I finally took the time to actually watch The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.
It was really good.
About as good as I expected. (prediction mastah, yo)

Edit: I decided to write a bit more, polish it and submit it as a review on IMDB. Here's a more thorough evaluation:

Finally a time-travel story that isn't bogged down with paradoxes and inconsistencies. Those usually bug the **** out of me when I see things from the genre. (Doctor Who, Stein's;Gate and Bioshock Infinite are all notable examples of stories that **** it up)
The fact that they only travel into the body of their past self is what eliminates most of the problems. But even then, they don't focus as much on the traversal of time as other stories do (and fail). The only problems with the traveling is the "teleportation" they do. Like her moving instantly from one place to another. Along with her transferal of momentum to her previous self. Those make no sense, but they're not given much focus either, so I can forgive those faults.

The entire story is an obvious labor of love. So much detail has been put into the characters and which parts of the story you are being shown. The movie never feels like it's wasting your time. Only towards the end did I feel like they were dragging a bit. I loved the big twist. It was done really cleverly.

I also wasn't impressed with the voice acting, nor sound effects. The main character sounded really fake when she was laughing and crying. Really fake. It bugged the **** out of me. She was good outside of those moments though. As for the scenes, they just often didn't have the atmospheric sounds they would have in real life, which made the scenes feel more fake.
The voice acting and lack of atmosphere are probably why I wasn't too impressed with the final "goodbye", which I will not go into detail about to avoid spoiling anything.

Overall I would recommend this movie to anybody, as it achieves greatness in almost every single aspect.

I just read 6 chapters of it. It's not worth your time.
Good art, interesting premise, terrible execution. The biggest problem is the freaking overabundance of inconsistencies. The plot has more holes than a swiss cheese.

You should watch Stein's Gate movie release. They fixed the plot holes in the anime and people drooled over how well made it was.

Planning to watch:

- Hyouka
- Mawaru Penguindrum
- TTGL
- FLCL
- Eve no Jikan
- Hanasaku Iroha
- Psycho-Pass
- Planetes
- Seitokai Yakuindomo
- Paprika
- Aku no Hana (It raised from 5/10 to 7/10 on MAL in a week, wtf)
- Air Master
- Ben-to
- Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu
- Code Ge***

I filtered these from a 118 anime list based on taste, genre and MAL rating (7/10 and higher) so they're probably watchable.

I already started downloading Hyouka, but I wanna know which of these anime is a guaranteed "Decent/Good" so I know which one to start with :3 Any idea?

Out of those psycho pass, paprika & maybe mawaru penguindrum.
Thanks to GrandmasterD for the sig!

Eeeeeeh, I'll probably find problems with it :P

I mean, how many people actually notice the plot holes in Stein's;Gate? I'm not sure I've seen a single other person among the 10 or so I've seen writing about it that noticed the plot holes. Some even defended them valiantly (Winter).

I may be mistaken, but you wrote something along the lines of 'not sure if it was a plot hole or not' about it, right?

I might give it a shot, but I'm not gonna expect anything special.
