The same thing has happened for Renekton, Karma, and Maokai - one guide is created and just happens to be voted higher than the rest. Everyone from LoL that plays the new champ and needs a quick guide now comes and mindlessly votes up the top guide, making it untouchably "good".

I suggest a voting system that we implement for guides written on champions that are no less than 4-5 days old. Make it so that a guide cannot receive more than 5-10 votes total (haven't decided on a number yet). Remove this requirement after the champion is "old" enough, and let the real guides shine.

This will make the guide system more dependent on vet recommendations after a few days, since it's going to be the recommendations that really make a guide shine. Generally, our vets have pretty good taste, so this would be a more reliable way of determining the really good guides for new champs.

What are your thoughts?

I don't think the admins would want to censor the opinions of the community. It is indeed a problem, but I think a decent build can easily blow a bad build that's voted up the first few days out of the water, as long as the later build is truly better.

The current "best" Maokai guide is at 44/48. It's really not that good, yet it's going to take quite a while before some other guide dethrones it, if ever. By limiting the number of votes put on a champion in the first few weeks, we aren't censoring anyone's opinions - we're encouraging more people to look at and test different builds, and we're also ensuring that votes aren't made out of "oh i had one nice game +1" or "oh my game was terrible -1", but instead encouraging people to test a champion more and a particular build more.

I think the easiest a nearest way to at least reduce the amount of votes that a new champ-guide gets, would be for any guide for a new champ to have it be mandatory that there must be a comment for a vote. This would however cause a lot of spam commenting, but yet, it would reduce the amount of votes that a later made, and better guide would need to get up there.
(The reason for this is, that when people notice they have to comment, they may wanna skip voting, unless they have something to actually say)

Aside from this, since the "best" is decided by percent, it should be that hard to outshine the current best guide for a new champ. Even though, with the example you put up, I can see what you mean, and it may also be hard to find the good guides perhaps hidden in the middle of a lot of "bad" ones.

But basically; Making it mandatory to throw a vote to throw a thumps up, would reduce the "overvoting" of new guides, that just happen to be voted up first.

I feel like a better way would be to have absolutely NO voting allowed for a week or two, so people view each guide fairly and decide carefully before choosing.

If the guide truly isn't good, it'll get a downvote.

I do notice it's a bit of an issue.
But, rather then limiting votes by time, make it a limitation by ratio relative to others.

What I mean to say is:
When a guide is has... 100~200 votes, it'll be stalled.
The voting button will indicate that this guide has enough votes, and tell a user to take a look at other guides below.

This would forcibly flood more votes to 2nd or 3rd guides which only have
10~30 votes that are hardly ever looked at. Either dropping them down, or bringing them up to comparably accurate ratings like the "top" guide.
Sure, there would still be a bit of a curve effect, as each vote means 1~3 more votes available for the highest voted guide, but at least there'd be casual limits. Votes would naturally fall into the lower ranks.

The principle here would be something like...
No guide can have 2x more votes then the 3 nearest guides to it's score.

I personally think the problem lies in Recommendations and the front page's latest-top builds posting.
This puts users into a tunnel vision perspective. They just see the top guide, and only look to the next best option if they dislike it. They just look until they find what they want, and it ends there.

Even if a veteran may have some expertise, it's still not a completely objective or perfect opinion. Users should be free to select for themselves. One recommendations probably means 10~30 people who'll never look at another guide. Which is very saddening relative to the concept of the voting system.

I find myself when looking for a guide to a new champ, I'll ctrl+find the name at the bottom here, then click the first guide.
Only if I dislike the build at first do I even think to look for another. And, if I do like it, the thought of looking at another guide will never cross my mind until I reflect on it like I am now.

A better solution would be removing front page's top-ratings display, and expanding the Champion picture selection.
If people click the champion page instead and get a vast list, and it will be more apparent that there's a variety of options.

When the list is shown, maybe the first 5 guides shouldn't be viewed as vertical.
The top 5 should be more square and placed side by side, possibly with their scores hidden for the sake of first-time viewers.
This way there'd less biased gravitation towards the first/top guide.

You are already suggesting that new guides will be bad later on with this kind of post.

Yea i am quite annoyed that new guides can be created within 1 day, but still this could be a suggestion that works for ppl that are not so familiar with the game and needs some help getting items for new champs.

In my eyes, this is still valid. If som1 will write a better guide it will get noticed sooner or later.

Atm the biggest "problem" imho is still the comment to vote thing that lets ppl get only +1 votes making it get riddiculous % ratios.
Did i help you? Click that +Rep

Just a random thought, we could have a box on the homepage that features the latest new champion and shows a selection of guides for that champion, which could include some top rated guides, some vet recommendations, some "latest" guides - a little variety to spread the traffic out.

However the homepage has become MASSIVE, so we'd probably have to remove something else to make room for something like this.
