[10.21] Incursios' Challenger Guide to abusing Yone

By IncursioOCE

Hey guys, Welcome to my Yone guide for patch 10.20, I'm Incursio, A challenger Yone / Katarina player on the OCE server and I am currently Rank 3 on the ladder with my peak being rank 2 1010LP.

I am creating this guide for people who wish to improve at Yone and League Of Legends in general. I love seeing players improve and offer coaching and tips to people who are consistent viewers on my twitch. Feel free to drop by and ask me any questions about Yone or the game itself.

A special thankyou to Niruhsa for the coding of this guide.

PROS

CONS

  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Very high reward when learnt
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎Playmaking champion
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎Can 1v5 games easily when ahead
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎Good in all ranks
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎No mana
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎Mixed damage hard to build against
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎High skill ceiling
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎ Soul Unbound backfires a lot
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎Struggles against bruisers
  • ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ Does not have big variances in build path
Yone is easily one of the most fun champions in League of Legends as he has massive outplay potential and can be an okay pick into full ad team comp due to having 30%~ ap off his auto attacks. This is definitely a champion you will never get bored of and is excellent for the end of season climb. When playing Yone it can be very easy to get ahead of yourself and be like his close brother yasuo. It is easy to throw games that have been already won and you will have to take a long time to learn when you can and cannot make plays.

Primary Page

Conqueror is a very good rune to run on Yone because of the mass amount of AoE damage he does to his opponents and can stack conqueror very fast.
Triumph is very good for killing multiple targets in fights (Can also run Overheal but it isn't recommended)
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
You would take Legend: Alacrity since Yone's Q ( Mortal Steel) cooldown scales off his attack speed and his W ( Spirit Cleave) animation speed scales with attack speed, so it is recommended you run this rune to maximize your damage output.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Coup de Grace is better than both Cut Down & Last Stand because you are trying to maximize your damage with your E ( Soul Unbound) until the very end which will usually mean they are low HP and the extra damage you will receive from Coup de Grace could provide an execute alongside your E ( Soul Unbound) damage when you pull back.

Secondary Page

Taste of Blood is good for surviving in heavy poke lanes due to it being the equivalent of a pot or two during laning phase.
Ravenous Hunter is very good for fighting huge teamfights. It will help you survive almost every game. Ultimate Hunter may also be used, but it is a player preference.
Flash is a necessary spell to be ran on Yone, for escaping ganks & getting 1v1 kills and/or team fight plays
Ignite is ran in 95% of situations, it will let you snowball your lane and is very important for Yone's damage
Run Teleport into lanes where you think you will be unable to kill your opponent, I personally almost never run this summoner spell.
Run Cleanse into Lissandra. This is the only champion I recommend running Cleanse into because she has a ridiculous amount of crowd control and it will lock you out of almost all fights for too long for you to have an impact.

INNATE - INTENT: Yone doubles His total critical strike chance from all other sources, but his critical strikes deal only (80% + Infinity Edge item 22.5%) AD bonus physical damage.

INNATE: Yone's Basic Attack basic attacks alternate between using his Steel Sword and Azakana Sword on-attack. Yone begins attacking with his Steel Sword, and basic attacks with the Azakana Sword deal 50% AD physical damage and 50% AD magic damage.

Remember that yones' second attack is 50% AP damage abuse this against tanks that have rushed Armor you will still be able to do relatively good damage to players who have built it and will be able to pick up the kill and snowball your lead.

Q Ability
( Mortal Steel)
Q ACTIVE: Yone thrusts his Steel Sword in the target direction, dealing physical damage to enemies hit and applying on-hit and on-attack effects to the first enemy hit. Mortal Steel can critically strike for (60% + Infinity Edge item 20%) AD bonus physical damage.

PHYSICAL DAMAGE: 20 / 40 / 60 / 80 / 100 (+ 100% AD)
If Mortal Steel hits an enemy with the thrust, Yone gains a Gathering Storm stack for 6 seconds, which refreshes upon receiving the second stack.

Mortal Steel 2
While Yone has two stacks of Gathering Storm, the effect of Mortal Steel changes: the stacks are consumed and Yone dashes a fixed distance in the target direction and unleashes a whirlwind that moves in the same direction. The dash and the whirlwind both deal the same amount of damage and knock up all the enemies hit in their path for 0.75 seconds but cannot affect the same target twice.

Mortal Steel's thrust is interrupted if Yone is affected by total crowd control during the cast time but its Cooldown reduction icon cooldown is reset to 0.1 seconds.

Yones' Mortal Steel is his most important ability to take trades with, abuse his 3rd knockup Mortal Steel to trade with your enemy with his Soul Unbound and back off before they are allowed to trade back. This is your more efficient combo for in lane trading. If you hit your knockup I guarantee you 9/10 times you will win this trade.

W Ability
( Spirit Cleave)
SPIRIT CLEAVE
ACTIVE: Yone cleaves with his Azakana Sword in the target direction, dealing equal parts physical and magic damage to enemies hit in a cone. The total mixed damage has a minimum threshold of 40 − 410 (based on level) against minions and a maximum threshold of 150 − 320 (based on level) against monsters.

TOTAL MIXED DAMAGE: 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 (+ 11 / 12 / 13 / 14 / 15% of target's maximum health)
Yone Hybrid resistances icon shields himself for 40 − 60 (based on level) (+ 60% bonus AD) for 1.5 seconds if Spirit Cleave hits an enemy, increased by 100% − 200% (based on number of enemy champions hit).

Combo Yones' Spirit Cleave with his Mortal Steel right after eachother to get maximum efficiency of damage and In lane you can use this ability to prock Taste of Blood this will give you good sustain in rough Ranged matchups. Remember to aim this ability towards multiple players because you will get a bigger shield which will let you survive longer in team fights.

Yones' Q is his most important ability to take trades with, abuse his 3rd knockup Q to trade with your enemy with his E and back off before they are allowed to trade back. This is your more efficient combo for in lane trading. If you hit your knockup I guarantee you 9/10 times you will win this trade.

E Ability
( Soul Unbound)
ACTIVE: Yone dashes a fixed distance in the target direction, gaining Spirit Form for 5 seconds as well as creating an untargetable clone that is sent the same distance behind the cast location, though not through terrain. After a 0.5-second delay, Yone can recast Soul Unbound.

SPIRIT FORM: Yone becomes ghosted, gains 10% − 30% (based on time active) movement speed and marks champions damaged with basic attacks or abilities. Each mark stores a percentage of the post-mitigation physical damage and magic damage that Yone deals to them with his basic attacks and abilities.

DAMAGE STORED: 25 / 27.5 / 30 / 32.5 / 35% of damage dealt
Activation resets Way of the Hunter Way of the Hunter's current state.

Soul Unbound 2
RECAST: Yone casts for 0.25 seconds then dashes back to his clone, detonating the marks on each champion to deal true damage equal to the amount stored against them. Yone is Unstoppable from the point of reactivation until the dash is completed and, at the end of the cast time, he will cleanse himself from all immobilizing effects that were applied to him during the cast time as well as all blinds, cripples and drowsy effects.

After the duration ends, Soul Unbound will recast automatically. The automatic recast is delayed if Yone is unable to recast Soul Unbound under any circumstances, which includes if he cannot move or cast abilities. Soul Unbound will also immediately recast upon Yone's death.

Yones' E is his most important ability make sure to use this correctly, you should always use this before you engage so that you can go back to safety as soon as your in a dangerous situation. Remember to use this ability against tanks especially. It is TRUE damage, this ability will take some time to get use to but keep trying it has many special mechanics that can be used such as removing Zoe sleeps during its 2nd Cast.

Ultimate Ability (R)
( Fate Sealed)
ACTIVE: Yone prepares a strike over the cast time, then marks all enemies in a line in the target direction and stuns them for 1 second as well as blinking 200 units beyond the center of the last enemy champion struck. If no enemy champions are struck, Yone blinks to maximum range instead.

After 0.125 seconds, wind then rushes along the same line, dealing marked enemies that are within the area equal parts physical and magic damage while pulling them towards Yone's blinking position and subsequently knocking them up for 0.75 seconds.

TOTAL MIXED DAMAGE: 200 / 400 / 600 (+ 80% AD)
Yone is locked out of performing actions for a total of 0.3 seconds upon blinking.

The stun ends prematurely upon the knock up.

Yones R is a super powerful engage tool to be used with his E (Soul unbound) this ult is very easy to dodge therefore it should be used as a combo with your knockup, this makes the combo undodgeable and will give you maximum damage output. Remember a key point, Players are able to flash out of your ult right after the damage goes off, the knockup is not a 100% guarantee. As it states in the league of legends official page.

Early Items

In early game you want to play safe until you hit level 3, where you can take quick trades with your (E) and (Q) knock-up combo. If you are in a rough lane where you cannot stop getting poked always make sure to try hit them with your (W) to try heal up with taste of blood, also make sure you are running (fleet footwork). Your build scales very heavily and your early game will not be as strong as your mid game, make sure not to throw your early game so that your mid/late game will be relevant. You should always try back with 1100 gold to be able to buy berserker greaves, as it is an excellent item for Yone. The reason being is that his (Q cooldown gets decreased and his (W) animation gets decreased. You also get the bonus movement speed. Berserker Greaves are almost always a must buy on this champion.

Item Build Path

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎
I choose this build path because Yone's e will do a ridiculous amount of damage as soon as you start building AD. I tend to finish the phantom dancer when you will get 1 shot by many assassins or get locked down by a lot of crown control. Otherwise going for Zeal into B. F. Sword will give you ridiculous damage and start your hyper carry snowball a lot faster than usual.
‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎

‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎‏‏‎ ‎
This will provide you with sustain with maintaining ridiculous damage from earlier, Phantom Dancer and Infinity Edge are the majority of Yone's damage and he is not as powerful when he builds other items, these are by far the most useful items you can build on him.

Starting Items

Start Doran's Blade in the majority of matchups that won't poke you to death such as: Yasuo, Akali & Katarina.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Start Doran's Shield and go Fleet Footwork if you are versing a poke heavy match up such as: Azir, Syndra, LeBlanc & Orianna.
If you are versing assassins or crown control heavy champions such as Lissandra or Galio going double Doran's Blade is a good buy. Or if you cannot afford the Berserker's Greaves on first back and of the following purchase is a good alternatives:

Core Items

Always rush Phantom Dancer after your Berserker's Greaves, it is the best early game item for Yone because his (Q) and his (W) are both affected by the item and will end up giving you more damage and survivability. It is not worth going Statikk Shiv until it is buffed.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Infinity Edge is the 2nd Core item you will build it is also a must buy. This is the backbone of your damage and you will hit a huge spike when you finish both of these items, it will make your (E) do a ridiculous amount of damage and you will be able to make way more plays than you were previously able to.

Boots

Berserker's Greaves will be your boots of choice for 90% of games, The reason being is that it will lower the cooldown of your Mortal Steel. NOTE: cooldown of your q does not go down with cooldown reduction, only your attack speed will reduce Mortal Steel's cooldown. Getting Berserker's Greaves also lowers the time it takes to cast your [spirit cleave] The animation is greatly reduced and lets you win way more fights. To make it simple, Attack speed = Damage on Yone.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Mercury's Treads can be built into heavy CC and AP teams such as an Evelynn jungle and Syndra midlane.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Ninja Tabi can be built into full AD comps, or when you are versing a matchup where you are having a lot of trouble, such as Zed & Yasuo.

Late Game

Death's Dance will be your third item for most games because of the fact that is provides you with survivability, damage & gives you one of the most broken passives in the game (20% of the Damage you take gets turned into bleed. This will be the decider between a lost and a won teamfight).
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Guardian Angel will most likely be your 2nd last item in the build because whilst it provides you with more damage, it also makes it so people are less likely to target you due to having to kill you twice. This will force enemies to fight a target that wont die for a long time stalling out fights.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Randuin's Omen will be your last item into Critical Striking AD carries, this item may be swapped out for a different tank item such as, Spirit Visage for extra healing or Frozen Mallet to glue yourself to your target making it impossible for them to escape.

Situational

Quicksilver Sash may be bought when all CC is being targeted towards you, this will be necessary in high CC comps where you cannot have a proper fight without getting rid of the CC such as a Twisted fate, Lissandra, Galio. :note Do Not buy this item if you are extremely behind as you will need the damage, If you opt into a quicksilver sash you will have no damage and be more useless than before.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Bloodthirster will be an item that you will buy later in the game if it is needed, I do not recommend this item if you are not fed, you will be targeted and killed instantly with no tank items, buy it late game for extra healing if they are not buying grievous wounds items.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Frozen Mallet will also be an item you might buy after your Death's Dance, it will glue you to your opponent making it impossible to escape your onslaught with your (E). Do not build this item before deaths dance, only build this item against comps that revolve around kiting your kit.
‏‏‎ ‎ ‏‏‎ ‎
Spirit Visage is an item you may want to swap out for Randuin's Omen if there is a lot of AP damage on the opposing team, it will provide you with more life steal and survivability. Do not buy this item anywhere before your last slot I do not recommend it any earlier, you are definitely looking for damage early game.
For Yone's early game he is quite weak so do not take trades without his E ( Soul Unbound) being up.

Poke Combo

First stack your q ( Mortal Steel) on minions until your knock-up is ready.
Combo Proceeds -> (E ( Soul Unbound) -> Q ( Mortal Steel) -> W ( Spirit Cleave) -> AA - > E back ( Soul Unbound))

Level 2 cheese combo

The combo is: E ( Soul Unbound) -> Q ( Mortal Steel) -> AA until Q ( Mortal Steel) is up.

This combo is basic but effective in early laning phase, using your (E) will guarantee chip damage and if things get bad you can just (E) back out.

Fighting Combo

The combo is: E ( Soul Unbound) -> AA -> Q ( Mortal Steel) -> W ( Spirit Cleave) -> AA - Q ( Mortal Steel) - AA - Q ( Mortal Steel.

When you start ramping up your attack speed make sure you are spamming your Q ( Mortal Steel) whenever you can, the cooldown is ridiculously short, you will want to weave your autos in with your Q's ( Mortal Steel), in the fashion shown above. This will output maximum damage and solidify most kills.

All in Combo

First stack your Q ( Mortal Steel) on minions until your knock-up is ready.

Combo Proceeds: E ( Soul Unbound) -> Q ( Mortal Steel) -> R ( Fate Sealed) -> W ( Spirit Cleave) -> AA -> Q ( Mortal Steel) -> auto until dead.

You want to combo your R ( Fate Sealed) with your Q ( Mortal Steel) so that they cannot dodge your R ( Fate Sealed) this will guarantee your full combo hitting and will be huge damage which is unavoidable.

Early Game

Yone Does not have the strongest early game for a fighter. You will want to play back until you're level 3, so you can start doing your Poke Combo Above. Only take Fights you are certain you will win, Yone's damage starts creeping very swiftly and will become one of the stronger fighters post Level 6, you will almost always try to fight and combo off your Q. To begin a fight in Lane you will always want to charge your Q ( Mortal Steel) off the minions until your knockup is ready. If your knockup lands, proceed with the Poke Combo above. Back off before they use their abilities against you and proceed to play safe until your abilities have come off cooldown. This is the most important part of playing Yone, make sure you don't throw your early game or it will be very hard to make up for it in the mid game. Make sure to track the enemy jungle as well as you can and try not to trade without your E ( Soul Unbound), Your E ( Soul Unbound) is one of the most important tools to get out of sticky situations. If you see a strong early game jungler heading towards you for a gank it is easily avoided by pressing E ( Soul Unbound) for the escape which initiated the combo with.

Mid Game

As Yone you will want to split for a lot of the game, be prepared to play safe if your jungler does not wish to sit on your side of the map, you will easily get collapsed and lose a 1v2. Yone is an excellent duelist and gathering a lot of EXP in side lanes is the key to winning. Remember to look at your team fights, This will be the decider between you staying in the side-lane or going to where the teamfight is breaking out. Remember to always pay attention to the enemy jungler when you are side-laning, as you are the easiest target in the game when you are alone. Take calculated risks for gold and fighting your side lane opponent.

Late Game

Late game for Yone is his strongest state, one good E ( Soul Unbound) into an R ( Fate Sealed) will change the entire tide of the teamfight, you will want to get priority in a sidelane and group with your team to unleash your high damage output AOE ultimate. This will be the key to winning your fight, do not panic ult or pre-emptively use your ulti before the fight breaks out.

Yone will look to go onto the squishy targets such as an Ashe, Corki & Jhin. Mainly the adcs and midlaners you want to avoid are targets that will take you a long time to kill. Your job is it to deal the damage to the champions that will be killing your team. Try to position yourself in flank areas which will greatly increase your chances of landing a good ult and one shotting the enemy squishies. This is the key to making Yone a late game hyper carry.

Remember to plan your fights ahead of time so that you know which targets you will be going for once you're done with the first one. Remember you can variate your plays depending on how fed you are in the current game state. For instance if you were 10/0, you could one shot an ADC without a problem. But if you were 2/0 you could maybe do some damage but not one shot them. This is when you play the team fight a bit slower and look for a team fight angle that your team will leave for you. This comes with patience and waiting for the correct opportunity.

This clip shows that yones' Mortal Steel can be used even behind you if you are close enough. The hitbox of yones Mortal Steel is 360° make sure to use this when you are escaping a gank or escaping an enemy in general.

Yones' Mortal Steel can be used to dash over big walls such as this one to narrowly escape your death remember to use this for sneaky flanks and escape near death experiences.

This clip shows just how far you can gap close to a certain target in a lane, if your opponent was backing on 10hp you can abuse your insane amount of gap closer to pickup the kill and start your snowball

use this wall to dive your target if they are low HP, they almost never expect it and will be left to die to your full combo. This wall is used because you are in fog of war, and they will not expect you to dash over. You may stack your Mortal Steel on the raptors beforehand.

This clip shows you how to full combo your target with phantom dancer attack speed. You will want to chain your Mortal Steel knockup into your Fate Sealed so that they can't flash out of your cc chain. Always make sure to weave your auto attacks in with your abilities as shown in the clip for maximum damage output. This will assure you the kill and make your Soul Unbound do maximum true damage.

This combo is the basic combo you will be using in lane to do the maximum amount of damage with taking the least amount, I have only bought berserker greaves in this clip to show you exactly how to combo a target in laning phase.

This is a special trick I found out with Yone that not many players have realised. If you Soul Unbound forward when there is a player made terrain wall your Soul Unbound clone will force itself over the wall and take you back to safety, start abusing this trick against champions like Anivia Trundle Jarvan IV as this will save your life countless times. Remember this can only be done over player terrain, not normal terrain. This does not work over normal walls.

This clip shows that Yones Soul Unbound is an ability that makes you an unstoppable force, while going back to your original Soul Unbound position it removes all CC like a Quicksilver Sash and this is why Zoe is one of the easiest matchups for Yone

This is another trick that works the same as Zoe bubble. You are unstoppable so mordekaiser cannot send you to the Death realm as long as you are going back to the original position of Soul Unbound (yes mordekaiser does lose his death realm and it will be on cooldown.
Thank you guys for reading i hope that this guide helped you learn some things about yone and I hope it helps you climb for the end of season rewards. Let me know if you would like me to add anything to this guide or have any questions come ask me at my stream!
