[12.21] Kennen Mid - Where He Belongs

By BalkanGem

⚪1. Introduction

Hello! Welcome to my guide, thanks for stopping by!
This is my second time writing a guide and Kennen was my first ever main, so i thought why not write a guide about him? Afterall i have gathered quite a bit of knowledge by playing him for so long.
I have always played Kennen in the Mid lane and i think that is where he is most effective, because he performs better againts squishy champions rather than Vs. tanks as is the case in the Top lane. He is also good at roaming because of his high mobility, and he can deliver some pretty good ganks thanks to his stuns.
Pros / Cons

⚪2. Pros / Cons of Kennen

Why you should pick kennen

🟢 Kennen has a lot of Crowd control (Stuns) with his passive
🟢 Kennen uses Energy instead of Mana which means you can stay in lane as much as you want, as long as you have HP
🟢 Kennen can easily escape ganks and disengage with his E
🟢 He has a HUGE area of effect ultimate that can hit and stun the entire enemy team and can turn around a teamfight if used correctly
🟢 You can poke your opponent periodically with your Q - which deals massive damage when leveled up, while wasting no mana.

🔴 Kennen is a squishy champion - he doesn't have that much HP and if he wastes all of his spells he can be killed easily.
🔴 If you fall behind by the mid game you can feel pretty weak, but you can always save teamfights with your ult even when you are not fed.
🔴 Farming in the early levels might be difficult for new Kennen players. However in the mid game you can easily farm with your abilites and infinite energy.

⚪3. Abilities

⚪Passive - Mark of the storm - Kennen stuns enemies he hits 3 times with his abilities.
🟡 Note - you can stun the same enemy multiple times.
⚪Q - Thundering Shuriken - Kennen throws a fast moving shuriken towards a location, causing damage and adding a Mark of the Storm to any opponent that it hits.
🟡Tip - His Q has a little more range than it appears so use that to your advantage!
⚪W - Electrical Surge size - Kennen passively deals extra damage and adds a Mark of the Storm to his target every few attacks, and he can activate this ability to damage and add another Mark of the Storm to targets who are already marked.
🟡Tip - always save your empowered attack for your next engage and don't engage if you don't have it ready yet
⚪E - Lightning Rush - Kennen morphs into a lightning form, enabling him to pass through units and apply a Mark of the Storm. Kennen gains Move Speed when entering this form, and attack speed when leaving it.
🟡Tip - This is your main engage/escape tool and your only form of mobility so use it wisely!
⚪R - Slicing Maelstrom - Kennen summons a storm with a huge radius that strikes at nearby enemy champions multiple times for magical damage and applies Mark of the Storm.
🟡Tip - Kennen's ultimate is one of the biggest in the game and if you use it correctly you can save teamfights, and even whole games! Always use it to its full potential so you can stun and damage multiple enemies at once. You should go in between all of the enemy champions with you E and then use this ability, right after that use your so they can't hit you. That will stun all enemies which will give a hude lead to your team in the teamfight.

⚪4. Runes

- Electrocute helps you burst down enemies faster. It needs 3 hits to trigger which is perfectly compatible with Kennen because he needs to hit exactly 3 spells to stun the enemy.
- Cheap shot makes you deal extra true damage every time you stun an enemy champion (it has cooldown), and you know Kennen is all about stunning your enemies. You can also go for for more durability in lane, because it provides you with healing every time you damage an enemy(20 seconds cooldown).
- Eyeball Collection gives you bonus ability power every time you kill/assist a new enemy champion, which is important because it gives you extra damage - you become stronger and kill enemies faster.
- Ultimate Hunter lowers your ultimate's cooldown for each unique takedown, and your ultimate is your most important ability for teamfights and solo kills.

Transcendence gives you reduced cooldown on your ablities. Remember you don't use mana so you can spam your Q freely. Avoid using your other abilities mindlessly though.
Gathering Storm gives you more and more ability power as the game proggresing, ensuring that you will be able to deal a lot of damage in the late game.

Bonus runes:
-Attack speed rune - your W's passive is dependent on your basic attacks, so the faster you attack the faster you will have your passive ready.
-Adaptive Force - Gives you bonus Ability Power, which means you will deal more damage
-Magic resist - Kennen always builds , which gives him armor, thats why you should take the magic resist rune so you can be protected from both types of damage.
Summoner spells

⚪5. Summoner spells

- and - This is the deffensive option for your summoner spells. You should take Barrier if your lane opponent is a champion who can burst you down easily - Barrier will help you outplay him and survive, and then kill him.

- and If you play againts a squishy champion or a champion who can heal himself, you can go for Ignite and that will help you dominate your lane. It will give you the extra damage needed to kill your opponent even if he tries to run away.
- and If you are the type of player that is passive and prioritises farming then you should take teleprt. It can help you get faster to lane and to not miss CS. You can also use it in the mid game when it turns into Unleashed Teleport(which lets you teleport to an ally minion) to provide the other lanes with a gank and get some kills for yourself and your team.

⚪ 6. Items

-Starter Items - You should start the game with a and two . Doran's ring makes you extra tanky and give you ability power, and the potions help you last longer in lane. If you are a new player never forget to use your potions! They are one of the most important parts of the laning phase and your only sorce of healing.

-First Back - The first time you go back to your base you should have enough gold to buy a , which you will later use to build a . Along with that you should also get some and if you can a .

-Mid Game Build - This is the core of your build and you should have those items by the Mid Game.
As mentioned above you should get a which provides you with extra mobility, damage and a little bit of extra health. Along with that it gives bonus Magic Penetration to all of your other full items, which means you will be able to penetrate trough the enemies' Magic Resistance in order to deal extra damage. (Note that it gives you a flat number of Magic Penetration, which means it will work best againts enemies with low Magic Resistance).
You should also get , which also give you magic penetration as well as movement speed.
The last item of your core build is , which is a MUST HAVE for Kennen! You should use it when you use your ultimate in a teamfight so you can stun all enemies without them being able to damage you. It can help you survive difficult situations by making you invulnerable and it also gives you extra armor to make you a little bit more tanky.

-Full build - The other items you want to take apart from the ones shown above are:
Rylai's Crystal Scepter gives you ability power and HP which makes you more tanky and hard to kill. It also makes your abilities slow down enemy champions which makes them easier to catch and easier for you to escape if you need to. This item stopped being popular on Kennen but i stil think it is very important to take it!
- Shadowflame gives you a massive boost of Ability Power, some HP and extra Magic Penetration
- Void Staff gives you a percent of magic penetration which means it is good againts enemies with a lot of magic resistance because it pierces trough a big chunk of their magic resistance.
-Other options - You should take instead of if you want to be more deffensive and the enemy team has a lot of ability power damage dealers. It will negate a spell cast againts you every 40 seconds and it gives you bonus Magic Resistanse.
You can also pick up instead of if you want to be extra tanky and deal damage equal to a percent of the enemy champion's HP as burn.
Lane Phase Tips

⚪7. Lane Phase Tips

The lane phase is crucial for the result of the game. If you have a good lane phase, where you farm a lot and get fed that will guarantee you a strong mid and late game.

1) You should focus on last hitting the minions, because in the long game they give you more money than kills.
2) You should constantly be using your Q to poke your enemy, because you have no mana and you can use it freely
3) Your E is your only source of mobility so you should have it ready to use most of the time, in case the enemy jungler decides to gank. It is your only way of geting close to the enemy too so you can also use it when you are ready to go in on your enemy (when you have poked them enough so they are on lower HP) and kill them
4) When you plan an attack on your enemy always be sure to have your W's passive ready, so you can maximise your damage and stuns.
5) Lvl is your power spike because that is when you get your ultimate ready. If you get to lvl 6 before your opponent be sure to go in and try to kill them because you will overpower them with your ultimate.
Late Game tips

⚪8. Late Game Tips

1) In the Late game Kennen's ultimate can win whole teamfights, so you should either initiate the fight with it and then use or wait for someone else to initiate and then go in.
2) Kennen has a lot of CC and damage so he can 1v1 almost anyone in the late game if they are squishy.
3) In teamfights you should focus on the squishes on the enemy team, because Kennen is a Magic Damage assasin and he can kill them easily. That will greatly reduce the enemy team's damage output in the teamfight

⚪9. Conclusion

Kennen is a very underrated champion that should be played more often, and i do believe his rightful place is in the Mid lane, because he deals great with squishy champions. Most midlaners have rarely seen him and do not know how to play againts him, so use that to your advantage!

Thank you for taking the time to check out my guide😊! I really enjoyed writing it and i hope it can be helpful to many new or established players who want to learn how to play kennen :)
