Azir
Azir is a hard counter to Katarina in the hands of a competent player. His soldiers out-range your Shunpo, his Q slows you and resets his soldier attacks, and his ultimate literally pushes you away during your Death Lotus. You cannot all-in him at any stage of the game because his E (shield and dash to soldier) gives him an escape and a shield that blocks your burst. Your only window is level 2 before he has his dash, but good Azirs play safe until level 3. After level 6, you never ult him unless his ultimate is down – one R from him and your channel is cancelled. You beat Azir by ignoring him entirely. Shove waves with Q and W, then roam bot. You lose tower plates, but you win the game through kills. Do not fight him. Ban him if you see him often in your elo.

Champion Build Guide
You do not play Katarina to win lane. You play her to survive lane, roam bot at level 4 and 6, and flip teamfights with a well-timed Death Lotus. She has a 48% winrate for first-time players and a 54% winrate for players with 100+ games. The difference is experience, cooldown tracking, and knowing when to go in. This guide teaches you all three.
Katarina is best picked into squishy enemy comps with low CC. She is worst picked into Galio, Lissandra, Cassiopeia, and any team with three or more point-and-click stuns.
Resets: Voracity (passive) refunds 15 seconds of cooldowns on kill or assist. This means your Q, W, and E reset completely on every takedown. Your ultimate (Death Lotus) has a 90-second base cooldown, reduced by 15 seconds per takedown. Two kills bring your ultimate back up.
Daggers: Your Q and W drop daggers on the ground that last 4 seconds. Picking up a dagger deals AOE damage and reduces Shunpo's cooldown by 78% (from 14 seconds to 2.4 seconds). Your entire kit revolves around dagger pickup timing.
Roaming: Katarina has no winning matchups in lane against competent players. Her power is in her ability to shove waves and disappear into the river. You win by killing bot lane, not by killing your laner.
You are not a lane bully. You are not a poke champion. You are a cleanup assassin who waits for enemy cooldowns to be wasted, then jumps in and resets through the entire team. If you are engaging first, you are playing incorrectly.
Q – Bouncing Blade: Katarina throws a dagger that bounces to 3 enemies, dealing magic damage. The dagger lands 350 units behind the last target. The dagger deals AOE magic damage when it lands. Cooldown: 11 seconds. Max rank damage: 180 + 65% AP + 100% bonus AD.
W – Preparation: Katarina drops a dagger at her current location and gains 50-90% decaying movement speed over 1.25 seconds. The dagger lands after 1.25 seconds, dealing AOE magic damage. Cooldown: 15 seconds. Max rank damage: 200 + 100% AP + 100% bonus AD.
E – Shunpo: Katarina blinks to a target (enemy, ally, minion, dagger, or allied ward), dealing magic damage. If she Shunpos to a dagger, she automatically picks it up and deals its AOE damage. Shunpo's cooldown is reduced by 78% (to 2.4 seconds) when picking up a dagger. Cooldown: 14 seconds base, 2.4 seconds after dagger pickup. Max rank damage: 120 + 40% AP + 65% bonus AD.
R – Death Lotus: Katarina channels for 2.5 seconds, throwing 10 daggers at the 3 nearest enemy champions. Each dagger deals magic damage and applies Grievous Wounds (40% healing reduction). She can move slowly during the channel and can use Shunpo without canceling the ultimate. Cooldown: 90 seconds. Total damage at max rank: 750 + 250% AP + 330% bonus AD (spread across 10 daggers).
Leveling Order: R > Q > E > W. Q max first for wave clear and poke damage. E max second for lower Shunpo cooldown and reset efficiency. W max last because its damage scales with AP and AD regardless of rank, and the movement speed doesn't increase with levels.
Shunpo Resets: Every dagger pickup reduces Shunpo cooldown to 2.4 seconds. This means you can Shunpo, auto, drop W, wait 1.25 seconds for the dagger to land, pick it up, and have your Shunpo back immediately. In a full combo, you can Shunpo three times in 3 seconds. The sequence is: E (first), auto, W, wait, pick up W dagger (E resets to 2.4s), Q, pick up Q dagger (E resets again), E (second), R, kill, E (third) to next target.
Movement Speed from W: Your W gives you decaying movement speed for 1.25 seconds. Use this to dodge skillshots, reposition for dagger pickups, or run down fleeing enemies. Do not waste W for damage alone – the movement speed is often more valuable than the dagger damage.
Shunpo to Wards: You can Shunpo to allied wards (stealth wards, control wards, but not enemy wards). Place a control ward over a wall before you fight, then use it as an escape tool. This is your only way out when Shunpo is on cooldown and no minions are nearby. Keep a control ward in your inventory specifically for this purpose.
Ultimate Cancellation: Your ultimate is cancelled by any hard CC – stuns, knockups, silences, suppression, polymorph, and roots (roots stop movement but do not cancel channel – you still throw daggers while rooted). You never channel your ultimate until you have seen the enemy's primary CC abilities go on cooldown. Wait for Lissandra W, Malzahar R, Leona Q, etc., before you press R.
Level 1: Start Q. Last-hit with auto attacks. Use Q only to secure cannons or last-hit two minions at once. Do not walk up to trade. Let the enemy push the wave toward you. If they let you push, you slow push and look for a level 2 all-in only into weak early champions (Veigar, Lux, Ziggs).
Level 2: Take E if you have kill pressure. Take W if you have no kill pressure (Galio, Kassadin, Lissandra). Your level 2 all-in combo is E → Auto → Q → pick up Q dagger → E → Auto. This does 250-300 damage and kills squishy mages who misposition. If the enemy respects you, you do not force the all-in. You let the wave crash, then slow push back.
Level 3: Take the ability you didn't take at level 2. Your full trade combo is available now. Look for windows when the enemy uses a key ability on the wave. Lux throws E to clear caster minions? Shunpo onto her. Zed uses W to poke? He has 20 seconds without his escape. You kill him. This is called cooldown trading – you fight when their important abilities are down.
Levels 4-5: Your goal is to shove the wave and roam. Q the backline casters, W the melee minions, then walk bot. You do not need to kill your laner. You need to kill their bot lane. Even if your roam only burns the enemy ADC's Flash, that is a win. You return to mid, catch the wave, and look for another roam at level 6.
Level 6: Your ultimate is up. You have two options. Option one: all-in your laner if they have no CC to stop your channel. Option two (better): shove the wave and walk bot with your ultimate ready. Tell your bot lane to engage, wait for the enemy support to use their CC, then Shunpo onto the ADC and press R. You get a double kill, reset your abilities, and walk back to mid with two kills and a wave. This is how you win on Katarina.
Early Game Summary: You lose lane gracefully, farm under tower, and roam at level 4 and 6. Your cs at 10 minutes should be 60-70, not 80-90. You are trading cs for kills. That is correct. Do not let your team flame you for having 6 cs/min. You have 3 kills. They have 8 cs/min. You are winning.
Roaming Priority: After the first tower falls (usually bot lane or mid), you swap with your bot lane. You go bot, they go mid. This puts you in a side lane where you can farm safely and look for roams into the enemy jungle. Your goal in the mid game is to push the bot wave past river, then walk into the enemy jungle and look for picks with your jungler. The enemy ADC will eventually come to catch the bot wave. You kill them, take the tower, then rotate mid for dragon.
Dragon Fights: You never start a dragon fight. You wait for your jungler or support to engage. Position yourself in the pixel brush or the jungle entrance – not in the river. When the enemy team commits their CC on your frontline, you Shunpo onto the backline (ADC and support) and press R. Your ultimate hits everyone in the dragon pit if you position correctly. Pick up daggers between Shunpos to keep your mobility up.
Herald Fights: Herald is less important than dragon, but the same rules apply. You wait for enemy CC, then you ult. The Herald pit is smaller than dragon pit, so your ultimate covers the entire area. Shunpo to the enemy jungler, drop W, pick it up, Q, pick it up, then R. You will kill everyone inside.
Split Pushing: Katarina is not a split pusher. You have no tower damage and no escape when Shunpo is down. You only catch side waves to push them past river, then you rotate back to your team. You never sit in a side lane hitting tower while your team fights 4v5. Your job is to be at every fight.
Mid Game Summary: You rotate bot, push waves, invade jungle with your jungler, and show up to every objective fight. You do not split push. You do not farm jungle camps while your team fights. You are the cleanup crew. You arrive 2-3 seconds after the fight starts, not 10 seconds before.
The 3-Second Rule: You do not enter a teamfight until 3 seconds have passed. Wait for the enemy team to burn their major CC abilities – Leona R, Lissandra W, Malzahar R, Nautilus R, etc. Count to three in your head. After three seconds, most CC is on cooldown. That is your window.
Target Priority: Kill the ADC first. Always. The ADC is your reset button. Kill the ADC, get the reset, then Shunpo to the support, kill them, reset, then the mid laner, then the jungler, then the top laner. Your reset chain depends on killing the squishiest target first. Do not jump on the tank Mundo because he's standing in front. Shunpo to the backline. That is what Shunpo is for.
Positioning Before a Fight: Stand in a bush or behind a wall. Do not stand with your team. The enemy team will see you and hold their CC for your Shunpo. You need to be unseen before the fight starts. Place a control ward in the bush you're hiding in. If the enemy walks past you, you wait for your team to engage, then you Shunpo onto their backline from behind.
Fighting in the Jungle: This is Katarina's best terrain. The walls limit enemy escape options, and your daggers cover entire corridors. Wait in a bush. When the enemy walks past, drop W, wait 1.25 seconds, Shunpo to the last enemy in line, pick up your W dagger (resetting E), then Q further into their team, Shunpo to that dagger, and R. You will bounce through their entire team.
Fighting in the River: This is neutral terrain. Your daggers cover less area, and enemies can run in four directions. You need to use your Gunblade/Stridebreaker active to slow them before you ult. The active slow guarantees your ultimate hits at least 6-7 daggers. Without the slow, enemies walk out after 3-4 daggers.
Fighting Under Enemy Tower: You do not dive unless you have Zhonya's or your team has already engaged. Tower shots reveal you and target you if you damage an enemy champion. Shunpo in, drop W, pick it up, Q, pick it up, R. If the enemy is still alive after your ultimate, you Zhonya's and hope your team finishes them. You cannot Shunpo out easily because minions may not be there.
Fighting Under Your Tower: This is free kills. Wait for the enemy to dive you. Drop W on yourself, Shunpo to them, R. The tower kills them while you channel. You do not chase them under their tower after they run away. You take the free kill and reset.
Teamfight Summary: Wait 3 seconds, kill the ADC first, hide before the fight, use bushes, use your active item slow, and never engage first.
Gunblade First (90% of games): Build this every game. The active slow, healing, and hybrid damage are irreplaceable. Components: Bilgewater Cutlass (first back if possible) then Hextech Revolver.
Second Item Choices:
Shadowflame: Into squishy comps where you need burst.
Nashor's Tooth: Into melee/bruiser comps where you need sustained DPS.
Blade of the Ruined King: Into triple tank comps (AD build).
Kraken Slayer: Into hybrid comps (Gunblade → Kraken true hybrid build).
Third Item Choices:
Zhonya's Hourglass: Into AD comps or when you need stasis to survive burst.
Rabadon's Deathcap: When you are ahead and need raw AP.
Void Staff: When two or more enemies build magic resist.
Wit's End: Into AP comps (AD build).
Death's Dance: Into AD comps (AD build).
Boots:
Sorcerer's Shoes (80% of games): Magic penetration for AP builds.
Mercury Treads (15% of games): Into heavy CC or AP poke.
Plated Steelcaps (5% of games): Into full AD comps or Zed/Talon/Yasuo.
Your team needs magic damage.
The enemy team has 2 or fewer tanks/bruisers.
You are below Diamond (AD builds require mechanical experience).
You are against squishy mid laners (Veigar, Lux, Xerath).
You want to one-shot the backline.
Pick AD (BORK → Kraken) when:
The enemy team has 3 or more tanks/bruisers.
Your team is full AP (needs physical damage).
You are against Galio or Kassadin (their magic shields are useless vs AD).
You are comfortable with auto-attack reset mechanics.
You have practiced AD combos in practice tool (minimum 20 minutes).
Pick Hybrid (Gunblade → Kraken) when:
The enemy team has a balanced mix of squishies and bruisers.
You want true damage from Kraken but still need Gunblade's active and healing.
You are in Platinum to Diamond elo.
You are confident in your mechanics (this build has no defensive stats).
Veteran Rule: If you are unsure, build AP. AP Katarina is always viable. AD Katarina is situational. Hybrid Katarina is for one-tricks with 500+ games. Do not force AD builds because you saw a streamer do it.
Full All-In (Level 6+): E → Auto → W → Pick up W dagger → Q → Pick up Q dagger → E → R → Ignite.
E-W Instant Reset: W → wait 1.25 seconds → E to target (you land as dagger lands). Practice this.
Active Slow Combo: E → Gunblade/Stridebreaker → Auto → W → Pick up W dagger → Q → R.
Shunpo Ward Escape: W → place control ward over wall → E to ward → walk away.
Teamfight Reset Chain: E to target → Auto → W → pick up W dagger → Q to next target → E to Q dagger → Auto → R → Kill → Reset → E to next target → repeat.
Maximum Damage Combo (Full AP): E → Auto → Gunblade → W → Auto → Pick up W dagger → Q → Auto → Pick up Q dagger → E → Auto → R. This uses three E resets, three auto attacks, two dagger pickups, Gunblade active, and ultimate. It takes 4 seconds. Practice it.
Shunpo Buffering: You can buffer Shunpo during your ultimate. Press E on a target while channeling R. As soon as R ends, you Shunpo instantly. This removes the 0.25-second delay between R ending and your next action.
Auto-Attack Reset: Shunpo resets your auto-attack timer. The combo is E → Auto → (wait for auto to land) → E → Auto. You can get two autos in under 1 second if you time it correctly. This matters for AD builds and for proccing Electrocute.
Wall Shunpo with Wards: Place a control ward on the edge of a wall. Your Shunpo range is 700 units. Wards placed on the edge of a wall count as being on the other side if you Shunpo from max range. You can cross walls that are thicker than your Shunpo range by using this trick. Practice in custom games on Baron pit and dragon pit walls.
Flashing During Ultimate: You cannot flash during Death Lotus without canceling it. Flash cancels your channel. Do not do this. Use Shunpo instead.
Input Buffering Zhonya's: Press Zhonya's during your ultimate channel. The stasis will activate after your ultimate ends if you time it correctly. This lets you channel full R and then go invulnerable instantly. The timing is tight – press Zhonya's 0.25 seconds before R ends.
Using Ultimate Too Early: You press R while the enemy still has Flash, dash, or CC. They walk out or cancel you. You wasted your biggest cooldown. Track enemy summoners and abilities before you ult.
Not Tracking Enemy CC: You see Lissandra has W up. You Shunpo onto her ADC anyway. She presses W. You are rooted. You die. Wait for her to use W on your frontline.
Forgetting Gunblade/Stridebreaker Active: You have an extra ability that slows and deals damage. Use it. Put it on a comfortable keybind (I use T). Use it every fight.
Bad Ward Placement: You place a ward to Shunpo to, but it's too close to the wall. You cannot cross. Place wards at max range on the edge of the wall. Practice this.
Overstaying After a Kill: You get a triple kill, you have 200 health, you stay to push the wave. The enemy jungler respawns and kills you. You give up 1000 gold shutdown. Reset after every major fight. Your team can push without you.
Not Roaming: You sit mid and farm while your bot lane gets ganked. You lose the game. Your lane opponent has more wave clear than you. You cannot out-farm them. You win by roaming. Shove and roam. Shove and roam. Repeat.
Dying with Flash Up: You die with Flash available. This is inexcusable. Flash is your only escape when Shunpo is down. Use it to dodge CC, escape ganks, or reposition during fights. If you die with Flash up, you made a mistake.
Building the Same Items Every Game: You build Gunblade → Shadowflame into Galio, Cho'Gath, and Sejuani. You do zero damage. You lose. Build BORK into tanks. Build Nashor's into bruisers. Adapt.
Does enemy team have 3+ tanks? → Build AD (BORK → Kraken).
Does enemy team have 3+ squishies? → Build AP (Gunblade → Shadowflame).
Does enemy team have a mix? → Build Hybrid (Gunblade → Nashor's) or standard AP.
Laning Phase (0-10 minutes):
Can I kill my laner at level 2-3? → Yes: Take E level 2, look for all-in. No: Take W level 2, farm under tower.
Is my laner missing? → Ping missing, shove wave, roam to the side they are walking toward.
Is my ultimate up? → Shove wave, roam bot. Is my ultimate down? → Farm under tower, wait for cooldown.
Is the enemy jungler missing? → Play on the opposite side of the lane from their last known location.
Mid Game (10-25 minutes):
Is dragon up in 60 seconds? → Shove bot wave, recall, buy, walk to dragon with team.
Is my team fighting? → Wait 3 seconds, then join. Do not engage first.
Am I in a side lane? → Push wave past river, then rotate mid. Do not sit in side lane.
Did I just get a kill? → Reset your abilities, look for next target. Did I just get two kills? → Reset, recall, spend gold.
Teamfights (25+ minutes):
Have I seen the enemy CC abilities? → No: Wait. Yes: Shunpo to backline.
Is the enemy ADC isolated? → Kill them. Is the enemy ADC protected? → Wait for support to waste CC.
Did I just kill someone? → E to next closest squishy. Did I just get a triple kill? → Clean up the rest.
Is my ultimate on cooldown? → Play safe, look for small picks. Is my Flash down? → Play extra safe, do not overextend.
End Game (30+ minutes):
Is Baron up? → Ward baron, hide in bush, wait for enemy to facecheck.
Is Elder Dragon up? → Same as Baron – hide, wait, kill the first person who walks into your bush.
Is my team fighting 4v5? → Do not join. Ping them back. Wait for respawns.
Did I just die with no resets? → You engaged too early. Learn from it.

Worst Team Comps for Katarina: Galio mid, Lissandra support, Maokai jungle, Poppy top, Tristana ADC (five champions with point-and-click CC or knockbacks).
This guide gives you everything you need. The runes, the items, the combos, the matchups, the synergies, the macro. What you do with it is up to you. Spend time in practice tool. Watch your replays. Track your deaths and ask why you died. Did you engage first? Did you miss a dagger pickup? Did you forget to track enemy CC? Fix one mistake at a time.
I have played Katarina for over 20 years. I have seen every item rework, every rune change, every meta shift. She has been weak, she has been broken, she has been forgotten, she has been permabanned. Through all of it, one thing remains true: Katarina rewards mastery. The more you play her, the better you get. There is no skill ceiling. There is always a faster reset, a cleaner combo, a smarter roam.
Now go queue up. Practice the E-W instant reset until it's muscle memory. Track enemy cooldowns like your life depends on it. Roam bot at level 4. Wait 3 seconds in teamfights. And never, ever, ever fight a Galio.
See you on the Rift.
