Professional Maokai Guide – Purpose, Playstyle, Runes and Build

In this guide I present a complete approach to Maokai, my main and best champion, covering his purpose, playstyle, runes, and optimal build. If you want to be a true main and get the most out of him, you’ll need to understand these points.

Purpose
Maokai is a champion with enormous utility. His main strength is crowd control (CC): stuns, roots, and slows. Ideal for engaging fights, protecting, picking, and dominating key areas of the map with vision.

Playstyle
Maokai can adapt to multiple styles:

> Full AP Mage
Armor Tank
Health Tank
Protector with shields and some healing
etc.

Choosing the right style according to your way of playing is fundamental, and understanding it will take you to the next level.

The mistake is copying builds (runes or items) that, even if they are core, don’t adapt to your style. Therefore, they end up without their correct functionality.

If you decide to play as a protector, your place is with your team, not alone pushing a lane without real damage or utility. If you build full Mage (which is rare, but for the example), you cannot be your team’s big engager and stay in fights. If you play full armor and resistances, you’ll be a great engager and can stay in fights, but you won’t generate much damage, etc.

My personal style
I play Maokai in the Top Lane with an aggressive and initiator focus, combining damage, tankiness, and ability haste to maximize CC from my skills. I don’t advise staying in extended fights in the early game since we’ll still lack tankiness. As the Mid Game comes, you can stay in fights, but before that, use your constant abilities to poke and keep distance.

Consideration:
If I only build armor: I lose damage.
If I don’t have ability haste: I lose ability frequency, therefore CC per second.
If I go full Mage: I lack tankiness and have no resistances in fights.

The key question is: Which items and runes complement my playstyle?

Runes
The following runes are designed for my aggressive and versatile style, and that’s what I’m going to teach you.

Grasp of the Undying
Damage: 3.5% of your max health
Healing: 1.3% of your max health
Permanent stacking HP

It gives us a perfect combination. Much more useful than Aftershock, Arcane Comet, or Phase Rush for my style.

If I want to play aggressively, I can do it with Comet, but Grasp activates faster, makes me scale in HP, heals me, and my damage increases according to my max HP. This is what I invite you to do: think and connect the dots.

Shield Bash
Bonus damage when gaining shields: 2.5% of your max health + 15% of the shield

This passive scales enormously with Winter’s Approach, generating bonus damage when gaining shields. And even more when enemies are nearby, because it doubles.

Although it activates mainly in Mid Game (since Winter’s Approach is usually a second legendary), it gives us limitless utility in damage.

That’s what I seek: not being a simple fat tank that generates no damage.

Second Wind
Heals 4% of missing HP after taking enemy damage.

Provides constant healing while taking damage. Key, because what we’ll be looking for are constant fights to activate Grasp and scale HP.

Overgrowth
Grants +3.5% max health upon completing the mission.

The strong part here is HP scaling, and this rune is essential.

Triumph
Heals 5% of missing HP + 2.5% of max HP per takedown + extra gold.

It gives us insane sustain in fights. Your strength is versatility from multiple healing sources.

Legend: Haste
Up to +15 ability haste upon completing the mission.

See how everything combines with what I want—in this case, more ability haste. It will end up giving us +15, extremely useful for spamming skills constantly.

Bonus shards: ability haste (+8), double scaling health (10-180).

Summary
These runes give you permanent HP scaling, % max HP damage, constant healing, and ability haste. Everything necessary for this Maokai.

Now let’s look at the items:

Doran’s Shield
Necessary to scale with Grasp and heal during early trades.

Liandry’s Anguish
Gives AP, health, and burn damage based on enemy max HP. Great since you don’t need to scale damage with pure AP, but with enemy max HP. Every champ, minion, and jungle monster scales with level, not just items. So the damage grows constantly. With mana and haste, your spells constantly burn enemies—huge damage!

In my playstyle, I don’t like Sunfire Aegis or Hollow Radiance since you need to get close to deal decent damage. With Liandry’s, you can rely on abilities, poke, move, wait for cooldowns, and re-engage.
Only if you have an easy lane, you can rush it first item.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity
Ability haste and summoner spell haste.
Your strength is in constant spell casting. Plus, upgraded boots give extra ability haste and movement speed on damage!

Winter’s Approach
HP, mana, and ability haste. Generates big shields on CC. If two enemies are nearby, the shield doubles. Synergizes with Shield Bash for bonus damage. The extra mana gives around 130 bonus HP, making the item worth ~700 HP total for just 2400 gold!

Eternal Despair
HP, armor, resistances, and haste. Deals AoE damage every 4s (3% max HP) + heals for 250% of the damage dealt. Synergy with Liandry is insane: the AoE also applies Liandry’s burn. Unstoppable in extended fights. Note: the healing passive is 250% of damage dealt, and Liandry boosts it heavily! In tough lanes, rush this as first item.

Spirit Visage
HP, MR, haste, and regen. Passive boosts all healing and shielding by 25%. Improves your passive, runes, and items. Even if you don’t need MR, the benefits are too good to skip.

Heartsteel
HP, regen, and infinite scaling. Increases max HP, improving your skills, runes, items, and overall damage. Deals damage based on max HP. Everything you need to complete this great Maokai!

Final considerations
You may wonder: “What if I face Jax? Do I build Frozen Heart? What if there’s Dr. Mundo? Thornmail?”
The answer is simple: don’t sacrifice your scaling or internal synergy just to counter the enemy. Let your support or another teammate cover those specific needs. Breaking your core build makes you lose efficiency and gold value.

If you like playing full tank with armor, you can. But you’ll lose frequent CC, damage, and sustain.

And here’s something very important to understand about this build and these runes: they are very hard to counter. Most players default to magic or armor penetration, but rarely build items to cut healing or reduce shields. Unless you’re in high elo like Master+, you’ll rarely find champions who truly counter the level of healing and shielding you’ll have. That’s the most incredible part.

I hope you can make the effort to understand how every skill, rune, and item synergizes to generate harmony with your PLAYSTYLE. Beyond this guide, that’s the main thing I want you to learn: think about your build and match it with your style.
