Introduction

So why support Yorick? Well, he is a great tanky champion with some unique CC and the ability to capitalize on a won team fight by pushing down towers hard. But before you begin makes sure that the requirements of the team are met. So lets start with a quick list of things to consider...
  1. You are wearing asbestos underwear if you are playing him in ranked. Most people are not going to appreciate a Yorick support unless you do very well.
  2. You will have a good lane presence during laning phase. Yorick can stop a Nautilus from having any effectiveness or prevent a Draven from ever getting an axe. But he won't effect a Tristana at all.
  3. Your opponents can be peeled with your CC in a team fight. Yorick's Dark Procession will stop an Olaf in his tracks, but won't disrupt a Katarina or Miss Fortune ultimate.
  4. Your team is not already AD heavy. So if you already have a Yasuo or Zed mid, try a different support.

Pros / Cons

Pros:
  • Unique CC that can effectively add terrain to the map for a limited period of time. Nothing peels an Olaf quite as well. Forces an opponent to waste 4 attacks in a team fight to free themselves.
  • Great way to balance a team that needs more AD or Tankiness. Provides a support type that few other supports can play.
  • Effectively can take or defend a tower by himself after a team fight. Few supports offer as much pushing power as a Yorick.
  • The maiden of the mist can be sent down an empty lane forcing the opponents to deal with her providing great 4v5 team fights.
  • With the maiden he can take a late game dragon easily.
  • Easy first blood tower at level 6 if you successfully win the early fight.
  • Few people are experience facing him in bot lane and he can be very disruptive to the usual supports.

Cons:
  • Lacks hard CC needed to disrupt a fight.
  • No heals or utility other than his wall and slow.
  • Has only 2 skins in game and his base skin is so good that you will most often play him skinless.

Laning

As a support you will not be getting much farm beyond that from the Relic Shield. Thus it is important to upgrade that item as soon as you can. Purchase an early Control Ward on your first back to stretch out the time to purchase the Sightstone. Remember as a support you should rush the Sightstone. If you don't have one before the end of the laning phase you are likely being a troll.

Your passive will trigger every 12 minions for a free grave. With the additional graves generated by your Last Rites, Yorick will have a pretty good harass every few waves starting from level 2. It is very important to land the Mourning Mist when summoning the Mist Walkers. Otherwise, they will happily farm and push the lane to your ADC's dismay. Thus make sure to land your Last Rites in range of the opponent. Watch the counter to see when one is about to come up, perform Last Rites and you will be able to make the Mist Walkers appear unexpectly with only one visible grave. If the opponent is pushing the lane use Last Rites on full heal minions to get back your heath and keep the wave from being lost to tower.

Between Mist Walker summoning use your Mourning Mist to poke. It gives a movement speed buff which can allow you to get in close for a Last Rights harass if they are out of position.

Dark Procession provides a very good CC which will spook the hell out of more ADC's. Perform a summoning and land the Mourning Mist and most ADC will be reaching for their Flash.

Eulogy of the Isles should only be summoned as a last resort when the opponent starts an all in or you must hold the tower. Once summoned the Maiden will not stop pushing the lane until she is killed. Thus she will destroy at least one wave of farm (and likely two) pushing the lane all the way to tower unless the opponents kill her first. Thus as a support you must hold her until needed to win the fight. Obviously if your ADC is dead the the opponents are looking to push you out from tower, she can with your aid hold the tower nicely. But given she won't quit if they back off, check your asbestos underwear before calling her.

Itemization

The direction of the item build for a support Yorick should depend entirely the opponents strengths. I usually rush the Iceborn Gauntlet for some additional slow, cooldown, armor and some hard damage. But equally effective is Randuin's Omen which will effectively make you immune to the opponents ADCs damage. Completing the [{Glacial Shroud]] or the Warden's Mail near the end the laning phase will put you in great position for the last lane fight.

After completing the core items. Decide whether your focus is damage for split pushing, armor tank, magic tank or health tank. This should largely be based on who is fed and who is carrying. Your goal is front line material so damage items should be of the tanky variety. Sterak's Gage stands out as one of the best balanced damage items for the damage build. With the Lifeline passive you can get into the middle of the fight and still come out on top.

Gauging the Enemy

The biggest reward for picking this type of off the meta support is when it is called for based on the team comp. For your team, examine how strong your team is in terms of CC, AD and tankiness.
  • If your team lacks a hard CC then Yorick should be benched in favor of another support.
  • If your team is featuring that all AD look. Go play Zyra or Annie because Yorick is just going to be a sad puppy when they stack armor.
  • If your team is completely tank free then Yorick may be a good pick if the opponents are packing to much of any one type of damage.

Second, you need to gauge how your utility will function. As the support your role is to peel their front line from the back line you are protecting and prove the CC to stop massive area effect ability from cutting your team to ribbon's. Fail on the two goals and you are just another troll waiting for their report.

Runes

Runes for a support are a bit of a challenge. With two champs in lane with you the number of potential combinations needed is quite large. As a tank your goal is to be a damage sponge. Therefore, your runes should reflect it.

Marks should be flat AD damage. These have the most benefit on the Mist Walkers both for harass and push.

Seals should be armor and glyphs for magic resist though the type used depends on how early the fight breaks out. Supports have one of the worst budgets in the game. Thus the late game scaling make up for late game cash issues. However, they do no good if the lane is already lost. Thus I always play a mix of scaled and flat armor runes depending on the matchup. The theory is look at the strength of their engage at 1, 3, and 6. A strong engage at 1 would be someone like Braum. He will likely try to pick an early fight where those scaled runes do nothing for you. The level 3 fight is usually a wash because your first big poke with Mist Walkers will be enough to put them on their heels. Obviously a Zyra or some other poke champ may change that. If they have a heal/utility support, or someone that depends exclusively on their level 6 ulti (say Malphite support), then take the scaled runes.

Quints is the one item that I vary allot. The goal of any support is to poke without running short of mana. I have not yet found the right balance between mana reg for the support Yorick. Playing without leaves me uncomfortably short if the laner holds on to get that BF sword, boots and darn it I also want to wait for the pick axe if I have gone this long. Full mana reg quints and full Meditation masteries seems to leave me with full mana for as long as I want. Thus the optimal number is somewhere between.
