A Taste of Support Amumu

Pros / Cons

Pros

+ Fun and spam heavy.
+ Very tanky and can lead team to victory.
+ Incredible lategame.
+ Nobody in low elo can resist following up on a great Curse of the Sad Mummy.
Amumu is similar to Leona in that he has a lot of CC, is very tanky, and can win teamfights by himself for his team. He is extremely strong lategame, and has very low cooldowns on very powerful abilities.
Cons

- Weak early game.
- Squishy early game.
- Low damage.
- Runs out of mana often during the early game.
Support Amumu's biggest weakness is during the laning phase. During the laning phase, Amumu is squishy and has long cooldowns. He does not have damage and relies on his ADC to follow up. He has mana problems until later in the game, and is slow moving, making it difficult to roam.

Spells

Take Flash to make flashy plays.
Take Exhaust to severely disable a champion that's causing trouble for your team.

Runes

As support Amumu, you want to tank as much damage as possible for your team throughout fights. Having defensive runes will allow you to dive towers and take damage for your teammates.

Masteries

5% CDR (very important).

Abilities

Bandage Toss is a long range stun that pulls you to them. You can use it to catch people off, disable enemy carries, and gapclose onto the enemy team. Max this first to reduce its cooldown drastically.
Despair allows you to deal damage to things with large amounts of HP, such as Dragon, Baron, and enemy tanks. With Rylai's Crystal Scepter, you can perma-slow anyone who comes close to you. Max this last, because it's not useful until you get a Rylai's Crystal Scepter or it's lategame. One point into this ability at level 7 is useful for helping to take down dragon.
Tantrum does moderate damage, but more importantly, allows you to tank a lot of physical damage. Max it second for the physical damage reduction.
Curse of the Sad Mummy is an AoE root that prevents enemies from attacking. It is great for catching people off or disabling the entire enemy team during a teamfight. If the enemy team is not clumped, it is okay to use it on only one or two people to peel for your carries or catch an enemy carry. This is because with this build, the cooldown on Amumu's ult during lategame will be only 66 seconds.

Items

Ionian Boots of Lucidity provide 15% CDR.
talisman of ascension The Talisman of Ascension provides an additional 20% CDR for a total of 35% CDR. The Intelligence mastery gives 5% CDR for a total of 40% very early in the game.
Always buy stealth wards if you haven't gotten a Sightstone yet.
A Ruby Sightstone makes you tankier as well as giving you a ton of free wards. With this item, there is no excuse for you to ever have less than 3 wards on the map at any given time.
Swap out your Stealth Ward for a Sweeping Lens to clear out enemy stealth wards. The Stealth Ward is obsolete once you buy a Sightstone.
Always have a vision ward somewhere on the map at any given time. Place vision wards in bushes for maximum effectiveness, and keep one on you even if you already have one somewhere in case your team decides to do dragon/baron. Use the vision ward in middle of the pit to enable your team to destroy any wards that come over the wall immediately.
Randuin's gives you a lot of armor, HP, and a great active for CCing the enemy team.
The Locket gives you magic resist for any magic damage the enemy team has, and an active that may help save one of your teammates.
Rylai's allows you AoE perma-slow with your W on. This combined with spamming your Bandage Toss will ensure that no one escapes your grasp.
Mikael's is useful if the enemy has a CC that is great at catching people out (e.g. Death Sentence, Dark Binding, Charm). If you have quick reflexes and are paying attention, you can save any teammate that gets caught by instantly using your Crucible on them. Beware its long cooldown.

General Support Information

Carrying

As a support, your job is to assist your team in whatever they do. Support is the hardest role to carry your team with, but there are some ways to greatly increase your odds of winning games.

Be a Shotcaller

Because support is (in my opinion) the easiest role, you should be looking around the map constantly to see what is going around. You can help out by giving your team advice and telling them what to do, but be careful not to be bossy about it.

Catch Isolated Enemies

When your spot an enemy champion alone, ping it to your allies and get a pick off. Doing this can lead to winning the next teamfight or an advantage over time.

Laning Phase

Be careful during the laning phase; it is when you are weakest.
  • Never take unnecessary damage; don't stand out of position and take an autoattack/ability from the enemy bot laners.
  • Always have presence in the lane by standing in a bush to zone, or standing in the open.
  • If the enemy laners go B, help your ADC push out the lane.
  • Always keep the tri-bush warded, regardless of which side you are on. Ward farther down the river if you are blue side.
  • As Amumu support, you get to decide when to engage. If you know you and your ADC are stronger than the enemy bot lane, then get a good engage. If you know you are weaker, play more passively and tell your ADC to do the same.
  • Amumu is highly dependent on levels. Try to get as much EXP as you can, because points in Amumu's Bandage Toss and Curse of the Sad Mummy greatly reduce their cooldown.
