Champion Build Guide

Ceru's Season 13 Mid Veigar Guide

By Ceru
Introduction
Hello everyone! My name is Cerulean and I am a Veigar main with over 150k mastery points to date and would love to share some of my self taught knowledge about my favorite champion with you all.

Veigar is a fun champion to try in the mid lane with several versatile builds and runes to experiment with! Some of my favorite builds are the standard Electrocute Build using the Luden's Tempest core.

If you enjoy AP midlaners as much as I do or scaling champions that rely on ability stacks, I highly suggest you continue reading and consider adding this tiny master of evil to your competitive roster! With a good overall winrate of 51.31% in all competitive ranks, Veigar is an oh-so-adorable yordle (with a height defiency) who can be quite ferocious in the hands of the right midlaner.. who knows maybe that might even be you!
Why Veigar?
+Powerful scaling
+Teamfight carry
+Versatile Stun
+Low ban & pick rate
+Good waveclear
Veigar is one of the strongest AP midlaners if you play your cards right. He has the ability to gain immense amounts of AP from his stacks and scales very hard into the mid/late game. With Veigar's unstoppable power you can carry your team in any teamfight even if the enemy starts building magic resistence. He's also beginner friendly!
-Weak early game
-Lot of strong counters
-Requires farming stacks
-Squishy in teamfights
-Only one escape ability
Despite Veigar's ability to one shot an entire team with enough stacks in the late game, it can be incredibly difficult to reach that point during the laning phase. As a champ that relies on stacks to gain ability power before team fighting, it can be easy for oppressive assassins like Zed or Fizz to out cs Veigar and force him under tower for the duration of the laning phase.
Abilities
Phenomenal Evil Power

Passive: Veigar generates a stack of Phenomenal Evil for each enemy champion hit by his abilities, and 5 stacks whenever he scores an enemy champion takedown.

Phenomenal Evil: For each stack, Veigar gains 1 ability power.

Baleful Strike ···TARGET RANGE: 950/890···COST: 30 / 35 / 40 / 45 / 50···COOLDOWN: 6 / 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4

ACTIVE: Veigar blasts a dark bolt in the target direction that deals magic damage to the first two enemies hit.

If this kills an enemy, it generates 1 stack of Phenomenal Evil Phenomenal Evil, tripled against large minions and monsters.
Magic Damage:
80 / 120 / 160 / 200 / 240 (+ 60% of AP)

Dark Matter ···TARGET RANGE: 900···COST: 60 / 65 / 70 / 75 / 80 ···COOLDOWN: 8 − 0 (Based on stacks)

Active: Veigar casts down a mass of dark matter that strikes the target location after a 1.221 seconds delay, dealing magic damage to enemies hit.

Dark Matter's Cooldown cooldown is reduced based on stacks of Phenomenal Evil.
Magic Damage:
100 / 150 / 200 / 250 / 300 (+ 100% of AP)

Event Horizon ···TARGET RANGE: 725···COST: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 ···COOLDOWN: 20 / 18.5 / 17 / 15.5 / 14

Active: Veigar forms a cage at the target location that erects after a 0.5 second delay, remaining there for 3 seconds. Enemies that collide with the edges of the cage are knocked down and stunned for a duration.

Enemies can be affected by Event Horizon's effects only once per cast.
Stun Duration:

Primordial Burst ···TARGET RANGE: 650···COST: 100 ···COOLDOWN: 120 / 90 / 60

Active: Veigar sends a primordial burst at the target enemy champion that deals magic damage, increased by 0% − 100% (based on target's missing health).

If the target becomes untargetable, dies, or is too far away or no longer in sight during the cast time, this ability will cancel but does not go on cooldown nor pay its cost (if applicable).

Teleport vs Ignite
Teleport

+ Increases your roam potential
+ Greater map control
+ Easier to join objectives
+ Good for offense or defense
Teleport is an extremely versatile summoner spell to take with Veigar in the mid lane. As a much better option over Ignite, teleport can be used to increase your roam potential and secure objectives/win teamfights with the increased map control this spell gives you. As an avid Veigar main, I highly recommend taking this spell with the standard Flash because I promise you will not regret it.
Ignite

- Completely overkill
- Less roam potential
- Not ideal for teamfights (but better for duels)
It's a common mistake for new Veigar mains to take Ignite as part of their kit while they try to learn the champ. Typically, Ignite is a standard spell to take for the kill pressure it provides and the sustained damage it deals when trying to secure a kill. It's fair to say that Ignite can be used to help Veigar's lackluster dueling potentional in the early game however, this spell quickly falls off and becomes overkill as Veigar becomes a one-shot killing machine with enough stacks and AP items.
Runes
Electrocute & Sorcery
Electrocute is the standard Domination Keystone to take with Veigar as it provides more damage than Dark Harvest even with a ton of fed souls and level scaling
Taste of blood is standard here, Cheap Shot and Sudden Impact have little use to Veigar's kit compared to the healing this rune provides,
Eyeball collection is a great choice for Veigar and scales well with his AP. In my opinion, Veigar as a mid laner benefits more from the extra stats this rune provides compared to the enchanced vision and adapative force Ghost Poro and Zombie Ward grants you.
Since the removal of Ravenous Hunter, this rune is currently the best option for Veigar's final rune on the Domination tree. After collecting a couple bounties with this rune, you will be left feeling very healthy in team fights and should be able to land your Event Horizon easier.
This rune scales very well with Veigar and gives him a lot of useful stats as he levels up to help with his power spikes. If you want to scale even harder, you could even swap this rune for Gathering Storm instead at the cost of more ability power for less CDR.
Manaflow Band helps immensely with the problem many new Veigar players struggle with before buying Lost Chapter. And that is learning how to manage your low mana when trying to poke against your laner or farm your stacks. This rune will help you a lot if you accidently burn too much mana missing some of your minions or playing too aggressive against a Zoe or a Syndra.
Adaptations
If you feel confident with your skills on Veigar, I recommend experimenting with the secondary Inspiration tree. Magical Footwear is a great choice for one of your Inspiration keystones and helps you snowball harder with free enchanced boots.
Along with Magical Footwear, Future's Market pairs extremely well with Veigar and is a must have option for the Inspiration tree. You will often find yourself making way faster backs with this rune, and it has even helped me in some scenaries mitigate fed lanes when I fall behind.
Ingenious Hunter is a great option for those who prefer running the Everfrost core with Veigar. The item haste it provides can come in handy for team fights and utilizing the extra cc Everfrost provides your kit. Treasure Hunter is also a viable choice if you prefer the extra early gold over the movement speed you get from the Relentless Hunter rune.
Time Warp Tonic and Biscuit Delivery are okay choices for runes that you can still make work if you really struggle to maintain enough mana during your early trades. Howveer, you will lose out on a lot of valuable stats from much other better rune choices.
As I mentioned previously, Gathering Storm is a strong contender for Transcendence that grants a lot more ability power as the game progresses but less CDR in return. Cosmic Insight is also another good choice in the Inspiration tree if you are going to be running items with long cooldowns like Zhonyas or Everfrost.
In general, these runes can be very customizable on Veigar and you may adjust the builds you run to fit your playstyle. I've done my best to lay out all of the options I've experimented with in real ranked and normal games for your convenience and I hope this chapter has given you some insight on the runes you should be running with Veigar in Season 12.17
Items
Core Items
Luden's Tempest is still one of the strongest Mythic options for Veigar in Season 12. This item provides a great deal of damage and burst for Veigar and gives a small amount of magic penetration as well, making your damage a little more efficent against squishies.
Sorc's Shoes pretty much adds on to Luden's Tempest, pairing well with the magic penetration stats for dealing a lot more damage against magic resistence the enemy team may be building against you at this point.
Rabadon's Deathcap is the final piece of the puzzel in your standard Luden's Tempest core build. Once you build this item you should see a massive increase your ability power stats, making this your first huge powerspike with an extra 120 ability power and an overall 35% increase of your total ap. What a stud muffin item!
Luden's vs Everfrost

LUDEN'S TEMPEST
VS

EVERFROST
A personal favorite of mine, Luden's is still one of the strongest mythic choices for Veigar and provides a lot of early magic pen that is especially effective against squishy team comps. The extra movement speed and burst is also extremely important and pairs very well with Veigar's kit. This item works very well against almost any comp and I highly recommend giving it a try! An alternative to Luden's Tempest, Everfrost is still a very strong item on Veigar that can still dominate the mid lane in the right hands. Everfrost yields a greater flat amount of ability power than Luden's Tempest and even has a unique active ability that stuns/slows enemy in a short cone-shaped range. In overall AP stats, this item is much stronger Luden's Tempest on paper but in return does not grant any amount of early magic penetration. The Active Ability is also a nice addition that compliments your Event Horizon nicely.
Gameplay

Early Game

Play passive
Farm Stacks with Baleful Strike
Don't engage extended trades before Lost Chapter
Setup ganks with Event Horizon
Deny CS when possible & shove wave if enemy roams
Keep track of enemy Jungler
As a mid laner Veigar has a weak early game with very little kill pressure during the laning phase. It's important not to engage in too many trades with the enemy laner until you can establish a sustainable amount of mana after purchasing Lost Chapter on your first back. Managing not to burn too much mana during the laning phase is cruical as Veigar because he relys on being able to farm stacks from minions with his Baleful Strike. The chances of you securing a kill anyways pre level 6 is slim to none anyways so taking extended trades are probably not going to be worth it for you regardless. I highly recommend trying to focus on your CS if you want to improve your early game as Veigar and once you've gotten comfortable with farming stacks, you can poke the enemy mid laner with your Q until your jungler can secure a gank for your lane.

With enough patience and hopefully a decent amount of stacks as well, it should be smooth sailing for you into the mid game as team fights and objectives start to open up.
As you begin to transition into the mid game, you'll start to focus more on taking objectives and roaming to other lanes to snowball the game faster when you get ahead. It's important as the mid lane to maintain map control over objectives or ganks; and even counter gank when possible to prevent the enemy jungler from sneaking cheeky kills on your sidelane. Sometimes when I'm really ahead as Veigar I like to think of myself like a second jungler, acting as the win condition for my team's other lanes and making sure I take every opportunity to put myself more ahead than I already am. It's also important to remember farming stacks even in the mid-to-late game so don't forget to clear or shove waves as they come crashing into your tower. It's easy to forget about your own lane when you're too busy trying to roam everywhere else on the map. Make smart plays.

Mid Game

Use your Teleport to roam side lanes
Help your team take objectives
Setup kills for your carries with Event Horizon
Maintain map control for objectives/ganks/invades,etc.
Play aggressive if fed and carry your leads into other lanes
Don't be afraid to take towers when enemies are distracted, Veigar can do a lot of damage to turrets
Conclusion
Thank you so much for reading my Season 12 midlane Veigar guide! I hope you have found this helpful in your jounery to dominating midlane with my favorite yordle champion. Happy climbing!
