PROS
+ Great roaming potential at level 6
+ Point-and-click root for easy CC
+ Huge AOE mid-game damage
+ Very tanky and hard to kill with items
+ Simple point-and-click abilities, easy to execute

Ryze scales into one of the strongest mid-game skirmish mages, with reliable CC, strong AOE burst, and powerful map mobility once he unlocks . His durability with items also makes him extremely hard to kill while still dealing consistent damage.
CONS
- Extremely squishy early game before Rod of Ages
- Very easy to gank and camp
- Low range creates many losing matchups
- Not a good blind pick due to many counterpicks
- Mana issues early until get tear and mana items

Ryze is one of the weakest early-game picks in mid lane. His short cast range forces him into dangerous positions, and without items like and , he can be bullied, ganked, and zoned off waves by longer-range champions.
Abilities
Ryze, the Rune Mage

PASSIVE ABILITY

Arcane Mastery
Ryze's abilities scale with his maximum mana, converting a portion of it into bonus AP.
His abilities also deal bonus damage based on target max mana. This makes mana items extremely powerful on him.

Q

Overload

Range: 1000
Cooldown: 6 / 5.5 / 5 / 4.5 / 4
Cost: 40

Active: Ryze unleashes a rune bolt in a line, dealing magic damage.
Casting E or W empowers Q, resetting its cooldown and causing it to deal AoE damage around the target.
How to Use

Q → E → Q is your main poke and trade pattern.
Empowered Q gives massive AoE waveclear — use it on waves.
Always fish for Q resets in fights for max DPS.
Use Q to farm safely when outranged mid matchup.

W

Rune Prison

Range: 615
Cooldown: 13 / 12 / 11 / 10 / 9
Cost: 40

Active: Ryze locks down a target with a point-and-click root, dealing magic damage.
How to Use

Use W to guarantee an empowered Q hit.
W is your main self-peel tool vs assassins.
When jungler ganks, E → W → Q guarantees a kill setup.
Save W in dangerous matchups — do NOT waste it.

E

Spell Flux

Range: 615
Cooldown: 3.5
Cost: 40

Active: Ryze spreads runic energy on the target, reducing their magic resist and marking them.
Casting Q on marked targets spreads AoE damage to nearby enemies.
How to Use

E → Q instantly clears waves mid game.
Use E to shred MR before all-ins.
E helps your jungler burst objectives faster.
Easy way to get mana flow stacks early

R

Realm Warp

Range: 3000 / 4000 / 5000
Cooldown: 210 / 180 / 150

Active: After channeling, Ryze teleports himself and all allied units in a large radius to a target location.
How to Use

Use R to create numbers advantage during skirmishes.
Great for collapsing on sidelanes or diving bot lane.
Use defensively to escape ganks or reset fights.
Can be used to shove frozen minion wave out very nich
Runes
PRIMARY RUNE
-

SORCERY
nullnull

Phase Rush: Best keystone on Ryze by far. Gives huge movement speed after your spell combos, letting you kite, dodge engages, escape ganks, or chase kills. Works perfectly with Ryze’s rapid rotations (Q → E → Q).

Manaflow Band: Mandatory on Ryze. His early mana is very limited and this rune gives him consistency in trading and wave control.

Transcendence: Best general option. Ability Haste is extremely valuable on Ryze for cycling Q resets and maintaining DPS.
Celerity: Great vs heavy skillshot champions; synergizes well with Phase Rush to dodge combos and reposition faster.

Scorch: Best early-lane option. Gives strong trading power with E → Q pokes.
Gathering Storm: Take when you are playing for scaling, splitpush setups, or late-game teamfights.

SECONDARY RUNE
-

PRECISION

Legend: Haste: Amazing on Ryze because he scales extremely well with Ability Haste. More haste = more spell rotations = more DPS.

Cut Down: Adds a lot of damage if you can get away with going this, you have low cd's meaning you get lot so use out of this.

ALTERNATE SECONDARY (RESOLVE)
-

RESOLVE

Bone Plating: Best into melee assassins and bruisers (Sylas, Irelia, Akali). Helps survive their burst windows.
Second Wind: Great vs persistent poke mids like Viktor/Ziggs; gives sustain in rough lanes.

Overgrowth: Extra max HP for late game. Helps Ryze survive burst and scale better into teamfights.

FLAT STATS RUNE
-

Attack Speed: Helps last-hit in early weak matchups and smooths early autos during trades.
Adaptive Force: Best general stat for stronger early damage.
Flat Health: Great vs early burst or heavy jungle pressure.
Summoner Spells

SUMMONER SPELLS
-
FLASH: is mandatory on Ryze. You need it to escape ganks, reposition during extended trades, and combine with W for guaranteed picks. Never swap it out.
TELEPORT: is Ryze’s best summoner spell almost every game. It fixes bad waves, gives safe recalls, prevents losing tempo, and opens up fast-map roams with Realm Warp. Ryze scales extremely well, and TP accelerates his key item spikes (Rod of Ages + Seraph’s).
Builds

CORE ITEMS
-
Rod of Ages: Core first item on Ryze. Provides HP, mana, AP, and scaling — everything Ryze needs. Rush it early so it stacks while you farm and safely scale into mid-game power spikes.
Ionian Boots of Lucidity: Best default boots. Summoner spell haste improves TP/Flash uptime, and ability haste massively increases Ryze’s spell rotations.
Seraph's Embrace: Buy early. Huge mana pool + AP conversion + a lifesaving shield. Perfect synergy with Ryze’s passive for massive DPS + survivability.
Liandry's Torment: Excellent for extended fights, which Ryze excels at. Burns tanks, bruisers, and frontline while enabling strong DPS in long skirmishes.
Zhonya's Hourglass: Top defensive item vs assassins or heavy dive (e.g., Zed, Nocturne, Jarvan IV). Lets you play aggressively without instantly dying.
Banshee's Veil: Great vs AP burst or long-range CC (e.g., Veigar, Ahri, Lissandra). Helps Ryze walk up to cast E → Q without being punished.
Cryptbloom: Strong mid/late teamfight item. Magic pen + AP + team healing on takedown fits Ryze’s brawl-heavy playstyle.

BOOTS
-
Ionian Boots of Lucidity: Ryze's #1 boots. Spell haste directly buffs his spell rotations and Phase Rush windows.
Mercury's Treads: Best vs CC-heavy or double-AP comps. Great vs stun chains & burst.
Plated Steelcaps: Only good vs multiple AD champions. Helps survive early dives & all-ins.
Boots of Swiftness: Niche pick vs heavy slows but low CC overall. Rarely worth it.
Laning Phase
✦ You're generally going to play the laning phase in two different ways depending on the matchup

Against all-in champions such as Irelia, Akshan, Fizz, Yasuo, and other melee dive threats, avoid touching the wave early. Only last-hit with Q , and keep the wave just outside your tower. This forces them to overextend and makes their engage patterns much harder to execute.

Against easier ranged matchups, try to auto attack shove the wave looking for manaflow stacks and get a decent ward out on either raptors or your own raptor's river ward

Do NOT spam E>Q early. Ryze’s mana is tight before Tear + Manaflow stacks.

Ryze is extremely weak before he gets his HP items, try to play very safe and you your Q to safely get minions

Ryze usually outscales most mids in skirmishes and teamfights, so avoiding early deaths is more important than winning early trades. Stable waves and safe recalls matter more than lane dominance.

After your first recall you can start using mana more freely on the waves once you get tear and roa components

Once you have R , you can play the lane more proactively. Use prio to roam with your jungler or threaten dives bot/top. Ryze’s strength comes from map influence, not pure lane dominance.

You can use E to bounce off minions to proc Manaflow Band even if it doesn’t hit the enemy laner. This helps stack Manaflow safely in hard matchups.

Always track the enemy jungler. Ryze is very easy to gank early due to his low range and weak escapes before Phase Rush + boots. Do not extend without vision, especially vs champs with gap closers.
Advanced Tips
✦ Advanced Ryze Mechanics & Hidden Techniques

You can use E to bounce off minions to proc Manaflow Band. Even if the bounce does *not* hit the enemy laner, you still gain a stack. This lets you stack Manaflow much faster in difficult matchups without drawing aggro.

You can use R to cross walls by walking toward the very edge of your Realm Warp circle. If the destination overlaps the top of the wall, you can “hop” over terrain with ease.

You can cast E → Q → W → Q and still root the target even if the W is pressed while Q is mid-air. The moment W applies, the Q that is already flying becomes empowered and will apply the root on impact.

You can cancel your R channel by starting a recall while standing inside the teleport circle. If you change your mind or realize the Realm Warp is unsafe, recall instantly stops it from going off.
