EUW Challenger Jax Build Guide 2025

By lol_Xabi
Who am I
Im Xabi, a challenger Jax player in EUW in season 12 and 15, (probably a couple other seasons too if I played more tbh) and hit rank 1&2 in terms of lp out of every Jax onetrick recently in season 15.
Rank 1&2 Jax OTP global
Runes
1- Grasp of the Undying + Sorcery:
The standard grasp setup I take. Grasp should be taken in matchups where short trades with W are what matters the most ex. Gragas, Riven, Renekton. Most people run inspiration secondary but I found that if you play well the biscuits end up being unnecessary, meanwhile, sorcery fixes both your mana issues and your relative lack of haste, which is crucial on Jax. It scales significantly better (and scales pretty quickly, even good after 1-2 backs), and you are already running grasp so the early power for trades is taken care of that way. Jax will push in most melee champions lvl 1-2 regardless so you should have enough lane control and control over when you recall such that the biscuits end up not doing much.

2- Lethal Tempo + Resolve:

This is pretty much the only combination of runes I ever take when I go lethal tempo. Similar to my argument about sorcery and inspiration with grasp, a lot of Jax players seem to take alacrity for a very small earlygame (only noticeable after 1-2 recalls) advantage but I dont think its worth the tradeoff for 15 haste. I tried lethal tempo with inspiration a bunch and ended up coming to the conclusion that second wind is straight up superior to biscuits earlygame so I dont ever go inspiration anymore, as the defensive rune is the reason why you would take either rune tree. I would take lethal tempo in any matchup where long trades matter the most ex. Darius, Olaf, Aatrox, most tanks.
Core build
Trinity Force > Ionian Boots of Lucidity , Mercury's Treads > Stridebreaker > Zhonya's Hourglass:
Overrall the most likely items to be good in any given game. Stridebreaker gives Jax access to tiamat which allows him to clear waves in 2 seconds without using much mana, and it gives him an extra ability that serves his kit very well, and so does zhonyas. Stride allows for engaging fights without using Q and then having Q to run away, to Q in + stride then ult and holding E for whenever its best to use, or slowing their adc after they cleanse your stun. Just a very useful item to have, with good stats ontop of that. Zhonyas is good on Jax because it doesnt make his damage fall off due to most of his kit scaling off ap for damage, and the active helps him engage fearlessly, and get more E casts in a teamfight which is a big factor into winning them. Ionian boots of lucidity are, in my opinion ALWAYS superior to steelcaps as Jax already has a lot of armor from pressing R and his E makes him immune to autoattacks, rendering steelcaps passive useless. In addition to that, lucidity boots lets Jax get more E casts which in turn allow him to be more tanky against AD champions, lower cooldown on flash and Q as well for playmaking/survivability. Mercs are self explanatory, good if enemy has high cc.
More second item options
Sundered Sky , Titanic Hydra:
Sundered sky and titanic hydra are Jax's next best second item options after stridebreaker. Titanic hydra still gives Jax waveclear to get more access to resources while also giving him the highest dmg output out of all items assuming you can stick to your targets/combo squishies. Sundered sky is the most defensive out of all 3 options (Excluding the fact that stridebreaker makes Jax harder to catch).
Build rounders (5th and 6th item)
Sundered Sky , Sterak's Gage , Frozen Heart , Abyssal Mask , Kaenic Rookern , Spirit Visage , Hullbreaker , Spear of Shojin:
Main thing here is to be able to be able to be tanky against all the champions on the enemy team. The main 5th item I buy on Jax is steraks gage, as this makes him the tankiest against most targets while still allowing his damage to keep up and not fall off, additionally it gives tenacity which is quite valuable. What I often do though, is that I buy a negatrok cloak after my core items and just sit on it, since it gives about as much MR as a full MR tank item, and then I build it into an MR item later. Sundered sky is fine if you didnt buy it beforehand and enemy are low damage low range champions. Frozen heart is good vs multiple autoattackers. Abyssal mask is my go-to magic resist item, better if your team has multiple magic damage dealers, but at the point you buy abyssal mask you will probably have a zhonyas which makes you deal magic damage yourself. Rookern is reserved for games where the magic damage dealers on enemy team deal A LOT of damage, and Visage is mostly just good when you go sundered sky 2nd to amplify the healing (Trinity > Mercs > Sundered sky > Visage is OP vs full ap teams). Hullbreaker should only be built when the game is unwinnable through teamfights and can only win by ending solo. Finally, Spear of Shojin is a good option if all you want is cooldown reduction (while still keeping up to par in hp and not falling off in dmg) but I would only build this item if I already had a Zhonyas Hourglass, as Jax gets too little value out of the %ability amplification passive without ability power.
Ap Jax
Riftmaker > Sorcerer's Shoes > Nashor's Tooth > Zhonya's Hourglass > Abyssal Mask > Spear of Shojin:
As a Jax main theres some games where you simply have no choice but to go ap to make up for your teams lack in magic dmg. This is the build that I run in those cases, after testing ap Jax extensively I found this build to be the most effective. Riftmaker allows you to play lane more or less how you would with trinity force, just that you're a bit weaker, but its much better than being full glasscannon with nashors or lich bane. Sorc shoes are pretty self explanatory since you would be solo ap in the scenarios where you would go ap jax, but theres a chance you might need mercs. For the second item I found nashors to be the superior option to lichbane (and I dont think you can buy both since you would be too glass cannon), it makes you powerspike quite hard and works well with riftmaker. You end up having very high burst but can still play longer fights. To round out the build I just build zhonyas like usual and then go for abyssal mask as it gives extra value on ap jax. As a last item I believe spear of sojin is the best overrall option as the amplified ability damage works very well when you have a high ammount of ap, and the AD makes your ult give better resistances, while also giving HP and haste for defensiveness too. You could go steraks gage though, for similar reasons, or cryptbloom for pure damage.
Botrk Jax
Blade of the Ruined King > Ionian Boots of Lucidity , Mercury's Treads > Stridebreaker:
Botrk rush is reserved for HP stackers, most notably Mundo. Stridebreaker is a better second item than trinity as you already have a lot of damage from botrk and just need to stick to your targets better. After Botrk and Stridebreaker, you should look to build the same build rounders as you would with the normal build (I dont think you really want Zhonyas on this build).
General playstyle advice
Jax has strong early levels against most champions in the game (including many ranged champions that you can fight either lvl 1 or 2-3) so you will be looking to crash 2nd wave and then let enemy push into you while trimming the wave (preventing enemy from stacking too many minions on you so you can trade/all in them with the wave closer to the middle). If you get lvl 2 first you have a very strong trade window with Q + E while enemy is lvl 1, although most people learned to respect this at this point. In lane, he powerspikes hardest with Sheen + Phage, and for Grasp I would recommend buying Sheen first, while with Lethal Tempo I would recommend going for longswords first. Beyond laning, Jax is a very strong 1v1 champion and sidelaner. HOWEVER, I believe the best way to utilize this sidelane power is to push and then move to group with your team, and I believe that ultimately, the most effective way to win games on Jax is to teamfight and not to full-on splitpush. What this means is that you will either want to: Go to the opposite lane as the soonest neutral objective thats spawning if your teleport is up, and always look to teleport after pushing, or: Go push whichever sidelane you're best suited to be on, and then immediately move towards your team to make a teamplay with them (and if nothing can be achieved while grouped, go back to push the sidelane and repeat this process.
Final notes
I know that the matchup section is rather light, I wanted to just put a few popular/crucial matchups in there to give you some sort of general idea of how these play out, however im planning on making individual matchup guides in the future in youtube video form.
