GrandMaster Taric Jungle : Welcome to the Gemshow

By lightrocket2

Hello all,

My summoner name is Lightrocket2 and I am a GrandMaster Taric Jungle player. The first and only one to get this far while playing it, I finished Season 9 GrandMaster maxing out at 520 LP. After I was featured in a video with Scarra where he was very impressed with my gameplay, I was inspired to teach others how to try it out themselves. The way I have done it for hundreds of games.

Additionally, I was featured in a ****Huap video highlighting my Taric Jungle. If you are interested in that, click here: ****huap Video

My Twitch can be found at the link below! I usually stream Sunday Monday Wednesday Friday at 7PM CST and Saturday 10AM CST.

If you are interested, a link directly to my YouTube channel featuring a few highlights can be found here: YouTube

Also, if you prefer to listen to me talk about the general playstyle of Taric Jungle, check out this hour-long podcast by Jetsa called:

It Sucks, Don't Do It: The Off-Meta Podcast

What is Taric Jungle? Why does it even work?

How does it clear?

Taric has a fast clear in the Jungle by constantly abusing his passive to have a very high attack speed and do incredible amounts of damage. At peak clear speed, Taric would have his passive up at all times, mixing abilities in between autos to keep the passive going. As his passive holds 2 charges, a very common combo for clearing a camp would be auto E auto auto W auto auto Q auto auto Q auto auto.. (repeatedly doing Q auto auto until E is back off of cooldown). You will want to always use your E first, W second, and Q last while clearing.
Q costs a lot of mana, even at low levels. The amount of mana Q takes gives Taric heavy mana issues which CAN be handled properly. Instead of constantly Q auto auto until you run out of mana, simply basic auto instead of spamming Q until E and W are available. I commonly mix 3 autos in between each ability while clearing, even though 1 of them is a basic, no passive auto. If you run out of mana, don't panic! JG ITEM at 0 mana will give you the highest regen possible! So, even though you don't want always be out of mana, you want to be low on mana so you have more mana regen. More mana regen means more mana. There is a balance that must be found between building mana and building mana regen.

How does it gank?

When Taric ganks, he can walk into a lane and tether and shield whoever he is ganking with W, and then proceed to both give them a heal and have another position to aim his stun from. You need to be able to land the stun to gank. As a Taric player, you will learn the timing on your stun better than anyone else. This gives you a small window of time to react fast enough to potentially flash to a location where the stun will hit. After the stun, you can basically attack as if you were clearing JG camps. (Looking into Orbwalking is also a helpful skill for this. Yes. Melee champions can kite. It is possible.) Also, when running Glacial, simply autoing a champion gives enough CC for Taric to get off incredible amounts of damage. Post 6 you can also easily dive towers with his invulnerability ult. Press the Attack gives a burst of damage when ganking and glacial gives some extra CC, both of which being amazing for ganks.

Below is a playlist of Taric Jungle ganking:

How does it teamfight?

Depending on your build and playstyle, there are many different ways to teamfight as Taric. You can be the frontline, backline, engage tool, damage dealer, crazy healer--the possibilities are endless based on what you build and have for runes. In general, Taric will want to be in melee range of someone at all times to get as much healing and damage off as possible. Whether or not you are diving the backline or peeling the adc all relies on comp and how far ahead you might be. Lastly, of course, making everyone invulnerable to damage for a couple of seconds is any teamfight's dream.

How do you move while fighting?

The way to move while fighting with Taric efficiently is to ability auto movement auto ability auto movement auto repeatedly. There is a small window of time in between each empowered auto to do something extra, whether it be moving, using a different ability, tiamat, etc depends on the situation. But obviously, in order to keep the empowered autos going, after every 2 autos an ability must be pressed. (note that this will be significantly harder if you do any kind of attack speed build, as that will shorten the window to use the spare time without being wasteful). Taric's Q W and R all have a short animation, but note that Taric's E does not have any kind of animation. Meaning that hypothetically: Ability auto movement auto (E + Movement) auto movement auto is possible without being wasteful. With the only waste being how fast you click to move after pressing E. Not that I do this consistently because making sure you are autoing each time WITHOUT canceling your auto attack with an early ability is more important during fights.

A live example

If you are more of a video learner than a reader, I would suggest watching this full game:
Raw Taric JG - Gems Carrying in GrandMaster
Note: This game is a good example of teamfighting and clearing but I do not gank as much this game. If you are interested in ganking specifically, check out the shorter length clips on my channel as the majority of them are ganking clips. Also, I don't always build like that and I don't always clear in that order. All of that should be decided on the spot: (do they have ap? do we have ap? do we have engage? are lanes gankable? did the jg just show top meaning free drag sneak? etc)

A more beginner orientated guide...

After contacting some fellow Taric JG players that made guides on Mobafire, a user by the name of Dexiron and I started chatting and contemplating the best way to play Taric JG. His guide lays out a lot more beginner's explanations than mine does, so I will link it here:

Dexiron's The True Power of Gems

However, as I have had my own success at Taric JG, what I have come up to using and what he describes in his guide differ. They go over the basics of abilities and clear so that is very helpful for new players. I will be making my own comments on the guide and how I do things a little differently.
Season 11 Pre-season Update Back to Top
With all of the changes happening, I want to get a very solid flushed out guide to Taric Jungle. However, there are so many changes and so much testing that needs to be done that I can't really make my final changes. The high amount of damage is killing Tanks and the changes to PoM and items are making Taric struggle with Mana issues even more than before. But trust me, Taric is still proving to be a very strong pick in Season 11!

I'm streaming most days at , testing the new items and different rune sets to really figure out the best and worst of the ways to play Taric Jungle.

And I would simply mention, that in the current state of the game, playing an AD assassin like Khazix or bruisers like Olaf and Kayn are simply too strong to ignore. Fights do not last long enough for Taric to get his sustained healing off sometimes and it will prove difficult for players new to Taric Jungle. Luckily, there are plenty of viable Taric Jungle builds with the new items :D. Even good news is that in a meta where everyone kills each other super fast, Taric's Ult will be even better than before, since it negates all damage. This also means that funnel will be stronger than ever before...

Regardless join me as I press on with Taric Jungle searching for the best way! :D
The raw details (old) Back to Top
At this point, I hope you have taken a look at Dexiron's guide. Now it's time for my own details on where we somewhat differ in playstyle and ideology.

Standard Flash and Smite are best. Hexaflash is a super interesting idea for sneaking over a drag or rift herald wall and soloing it without anyone noticing. It also creates better ganking and clearing paths that are very effective on a dashless champion. When running Glacial, hexaflash can really be a lifesaver.

Simply read what I have for ability leveling. The main thing is that you want to hold off from leveling Q if you are having mana issues. You can start a fight with a full q for first heal, E auto auto W auto auto and congrats you have a 4 stack Q ready. Not being able to stack charges into your Q takes away from your healing drastically. Although I want Q first, going E first is better for conserving mana in the JG. I make sure to use w and e whenever they are available to build Q stacks from your passive and since your passive lowers their cooldown by 1 second per hit. This is where Dexiron's guide's ability leveling differs because at a certain point he gets his 4 lvl on Q and then holds off on the last level until 18. A very interesting idea but w isn't as useful as a 5 stack heal.

One of the main things that give me an early advantage is taking Faerie Charm instead of a pot! I always work it into Ardent Censer at some point plus the extra mana is nice. Taric spends most of the time jungling at full health so pots simply aren't worth it.

Dexiron likes building mobi boots for crazy movement speed on top of RG which is nice but not helpful whatsoever if you get caught or are behind. I find that normal Mercs or Tabis are better unless you are snowball winning HARD.

Also, Taric's clear speed is good, and what I used to go early was Sheen. The amount of usage you get from sheen is very large since you are using abilities constantly. However, going Glacial replaced the need for Iceborn's CC. Spending gold on movement speed items is good for catching squishy champs but when you are facing champions that will jump right on top of you, consider Aftershock or PTA.
For more on items look at what I say on my build, but the main comments are that you need your dueling potential, clear speed, and movement speed where you can usually only choose 2 of the 3, which brings me straight to...

I really like the concept of going Glacial Augment with Taric. The melee slow works well and combos nicely with Approach Velocity making it insanely difficult to escape Taric. Whether or not you should be choosing Glacial or Aftershock is situational. I find that the middle runes for Inspiration are not as strong for dueling as what you can get from running both Resolve and Precision at the same time. You need to be confident they will be running away from you and not towards you if you are going Glacial.

However, if you really want to duel strongly, consider going Press the Attack. If you are facing a burst JG, continuing to go Cinderhulk is usually better. However, you can potentially build Bloodrazor and shred tanks with it or simply PTA alone will give you enough early damage to 1v1 burst junglers like Elise and Khazix much easier. Note that if you are building Bloodrazor consider getting double adaptive instead of the attack speed rune because you will gain almost too much attack speed to use it. I never build Bloodrazor and Ardent Senser together because then you are overcapping the attack speed limit! Going Alacrity and the AS rune gives you a massive boost to early jungle clear speed.

Threats and Synergies:

Everyone has different play styles and different elos that they play in. Meaning that the strength or weakness someone finds a champ differs on playstyle. I seriously consider the ones I have listed to be the most accurate but everyone has their own way of playing so you have to figure it out yourself.

I was proud to see Dexiron mentioned the trick to Raptor pit. If you mid is low, chain your w to them as you do the camp. With 4-5 2 charge Q's they should be back to full health. I did that for Scarra and he said "Wait that's broken! Alright... Taric jungle is broken." Which it is ;)

Linked below is a YouTube video clearly showing how broken the raptor healing trick is:

Taric Jungle - Raptor Trick Pog Champ

Sometimes landing your stun on camps can be difficult. After red buff, run to raptors and smite the big raptor and use your e at the same time. They will all run at you allowing your e to hit every raptor. When I do wolves I use my e before even seeing them so that when I get to them they are stunned immediately. It's just something you have to learn as you play.
What was missing? (old) Back to Top
To be honest, not much. His guide covers most of the basics of Taric JG and is very nicely laid out.

The main thing I saw missing was that Taric has an insane ability to soloing objectives on his own. I will often do the drag level 4 by myself. You stay so healthy while doing it that there is no problem (especially if you pop a biscuit!). As long as the drake isn't an Ocean drake and slows your movement like crazy--if the enemy jg finds out just keep doing it anyway, run away, or hexaflash over the wall to escape. If they took skuttle crab, hop the wall using blast plant or hexaflash and sneak it.

Another thing to mention is that yes, Taric JG can gank! Maybe not as easily as a Jarvin would be able to, but if you are ganking correctly you can pull it off. Post-6 you can easily use your ult to dive turrets with a buddy for an easy gank. But before that is also doable.

If you are running Glacial, ganking is even easier. Simply walk into lane and start autoing them. The slow and approach velocity will allow you to continuiously smack them until they panic. They flash away or dash and since you held your stun, you can now easily land your stun. And then they die... that's really it.

But what about with Aftershock?

It's still doable! As a Taric player, you will know the length of your E better than anyone else. Thus, they will flash away before it goes off, leaving you a very short window to flash to where they flashed and land the stun. Then afterward just smack them until they die. The trick for ganking bot is to aim at one of the players while intending to flash to the other and land it. The person you are aiming at will burn flash and waste it. While the one you are flashing to won't have the reaction time to realize they are dead. A very good example of this is where I gank bot level 2 in this clip:

Against... Aphromoo?

How about C9 Sneaky?

But otherwise, that's it for now! I'm confident that the other popular Taric Jungle guides and go in enough detail to answer the basics that I didn't cover concisely.

Good luck climbing Mount Targon summoners!
