Buy Seekers Armguard if even or behind into an hourglass. You can build Crown of the Shattered Queen if you really struggle into this matchup, but Luden's Tempest is optimal. Plated Steelcaps is a boot option if you prefer more armor but Sorcerer's Shoes is more optimal. When he ults you, you can use your E behind yourself to knock him up the moment he comes out of his R. Keep the wave pushed and make sure he doesn't get roams on your laners. Also, watch his shadows and make sure he doesn't catch you off guard with an all-in after a shadow swap.
Fizz
I personally always ban Fizz whenever I'm playing Vel'koz. His E can basically dodge your entire combo so its almost impossible to kill him if he has any portion of his brain intact. Get a Zhonyas and you may be able to stopwatch his R. Banshee's Veil is highly recommended to prevent random Fizz R's from catching you off guard.
Yasuo
Predict his e dashes. Learn over time. Ban if u cannot handle. R goes through windwall. Q W E does not go through windwall.
Ekko
This champion has lots of mobility and burst. You will probably get pushed in and he can easily dive you if you're low enough. Try to keep the wave thinned out and prevent it from crashing because if it crashes he will dive you with his w shield e auto and r if he needs to. If you can play this matchup properly you can win pretty easily. Keep in mind where his r is so you don't get caught by his r because that ability CHUNKS. If you do however be prepared to flash out.
Play off of cooldowns as he is also a mage and trade from a distance.
Annie
She has tons of burst so play safer in lane. While she can't all in you pre 6 watch out for her flash stuns so you don't get caught. Pre 6 you should be playing more aggressive and shoving her in. Later in the game get yourself a banshees so you don't get flash stunned by her. DON'T UNDERESTIMATE HER DAMAGE.
Katarina
This champion just dashes everywhere. Stay under tower and farm safely. Don't lose hp for some cs because early game cs isn't as important as xp. lvl 1 she doesn't have much mobility so look for some autos. Once she hits 2 be wary of her dashes on you. Hold onto your e and don't use it until you're sure its going to hit because once your e is down you're very vulnerable. You can cancel her r with your e and she can dash behind you while you're in r. Play Smart.
Akali
As long as you don't get hit by her e then you should live. Don't use your e if she has e or r up because she can just dash and you would just lose your e pressure.
Diana
Pre6 you can play more aggro since she can't all in you yet. Be careful of getting hit by her q too many times because she can all in if you're below 50% hp. Once she hits 6 then she has kill pressure on you so if you get hit by her r make sure to flash the second part of her ult if you want to survive.
Jarvan IV
If you get ulted you're dead unless you flash out of it.
Pyke
Don't get in his e range or else you're probably dead.
Vel'Koz
Stop playing Blind Pick
Qiyana
lvl 1 you can weave in a few autos but don't get in her e range and stay away from walls once she gets 6. keep in mind what q she has so you can play properly
Kassadin
You just have to play perfectly against this champ. He can r your combo and q your out of your r. I don't usually ban this champion because not many people play him but if you do go against one play super aggro pre 6.
LeBlanc
Once she hits lvl 2 play from afar because if she gets a q w onto you then you will take tons of damage and you can die. Don't use your e if she recently used her w or she has her w up. And don't use it if she has ult and her last ability used was her w.
Nocturne
If you're going against a noc mid then look to poke him and don't go anywhere close to him as if you get feared you might be dead. You shouldn't have a problem laning phase pre6 since he doesn't have any real way of getting onto you besides flash. If he flash e's you then flash away before you get feared. If you try to trade back he will just use his e and block a good chunk of your dmg. Post6 you need to be careful of walking up because he can just ult you and run you down and there isn't much you can do about it. If you're going against noc jungle you probably won't get ganked before he hits 6 so don't worry too much. However this doesn't mean you won't get ganked since not every jungler plays the same and some might do some cheesy things.
Talon
Stay away from walls and know when he has his r up. Early game shove him in so he cant roam. Pre6 you will want to be bullying him and poking him out of lane. Do not trade with talon if he can get his passive off because that can easily kill you. Don't underestimate his oneshot potential. Lategame he can still oneshot you due to his passive.
Xerath
He outranges you pretty well but you do more damage. Try to get closer to him to kill him. Laning phase should be a breeze as long as you don't take too many abilities to the face.
Syndra
Syndra has lots of burst and poke. If she gets a lead then she can oneshot you sooner or later. Look to flash her e if getting hit by that will kill you. If you manage to dodge it then look for an all in since her e is the only thing that can put you into cc.
Zoe
If you get hit but her e then there is a high chance that you're dead. Cleanse is recommended. Play behind minions to avoid getting hit by e.
Zac
Tanky and does lots of damage. If you are going against a zac then try to play safe and watch out for random ganks because zac players like to gank mid and since you have no mobility this is a perfect gank lane.
Cassiopeia
Depends on how you play the matchup. You have more range than her so don't be scared to trade. However if you get hit by her r then you're most likely dead.
Veigar
Play from a distance away from his cage. If you do get caged then barrier his full combo and you might just live.
His early game is very weak to shove him in and get prio.
Master Yi
Play with your team. If you get caught by a yi then you're most likely already dead. Once he presses r he can't be slowed and if you decide to e him he can just q and dodge it. Even if he can't q it he probably will just flash it. Once he gets on top of you you're basically done.
Malphite
If u get ulted ur basically dead. Get a stopwatch and try to time it. Play from a safe distance.
Lux
easiest matchup if you know what youre doing
Heimerdinger
You will most likely be shoved in pretty hard but try to keep the wave in balance by using w on the wave. It isn't that dangerous to shove the wave with e since heimer cant really punish you for using your e. Later in the game you should win.
Azir
This matchup depends on how you play it. You should be keeping your distance and not be in range of his q. If he manages to get a good r on you then you're probably dead so play it safe since you have more range.
Malzahar
The only real threat is his r so bring cleanse with you if they can follow up and kill you. You can take down his passive shield with an auto attack so look to take it down whenever possible. Taking Liandries is necessary because if ur in combat then he will be in combat too and that means it will take longer for his shield to come back.
Ryze
He can't really do much because his range is quite short. However be careful of his r because he can make his team on your face.
Vel'koz is an immobile Ability Power Mage who deals a lot of True Damage to his opponents. With that said, his playstyle is playing back and poking the enemy team before going for an all-in. Instead of engaging the enemy team, you must play cautiously because you are very vulnerable to being assassinated. A trick to make myself play better is to buy Mejais Soulstealer so I don't make dumb plays and get myself killed for no reason.
Knowing how to position yourself properly is key to playing Vel'koz proficiently. Bad positioning results in being caught by engages such as Nautilus or assassins like Zed.
Most of Vel'koz's damage comes from his passive.
The way to trigger the passive is to hit an enemy champion with abilities 3 times. The third time an enemy champion is hit by an ability, it will trigger a burst of true damage. Vel'koz's passive has no cooldown meaning that you can trigger his passive multiple times on the same target. You can refresh the duration stacks remain on an enemy by auto-attacking them.
Simple Combos
The simplest Vel'koz combo is Q into an R. this will proc ONE rotation of your passive. However, this combo is not particularly effective unless you perform the combo W E Q R. Vel'koz's R deals True Damage to any opponent who has recently been affected by the 3-hit passive of Vel'koz.
Keep in mind W has NO CAST TIME meaning you can W E at the same exact time. This also works for W Q as well as W R. You CANNOT E W or Q W at the same time because both Q and E have cast times. This means that there will be a delay in between casting.
Knowing the information above, we can do the combo Q W E R. The Q for the slow, W E for the knockup, and R to finish. This combo can be changed to W E Q R, which is slower but if you want to save your Q, then that combo works. Keep in mind you will be losing the Q slow in exchange for keeping your Q ready.
