Just like warwick champs who can engage and disengage effectively can be ideal allies to help you get in position or to just have more of a frontline for your team. Granted we're going for a more tankier set up of Azir but it's still nice to have someone up there with you and not all be ranged and small-hp.

Champion Build Guide
One of Azir's downsides especially early game is his small HP pool the runes and build items help counter this weakness and this can surprise enemy players later in the game that try to 1v1 you.
