Champion Build Guide
How is it going guys! My name is Rezone and I'm a Master Tier Midlane main. I peaked at 270 LP Master Tier in Season 11! I upload gameplays, guides, tips and pretty much any other League of Legends related content you could ever ask for!
I was the BEST HEIMERDINGER EUW in Season 7 & 8 and I'm best known for inventing the Holy Trinity of Tilt build on Heimerdinger a couple of seasons ago (Banner of Command, ZZ'Rot Portal and Rylai's)! I've also recently competed in TWITCH RIVALS where I played Heimerdinger ADC and came joint first against other streamers such as TFBlade.I peaked 248 LP Master tier in Season 9 and this was due to my aggressive play style!
You will always want to take Flash when playing as Swain. Without Flash, you are highly immobile and most likely going to get camped. Flash and Ignite are my preferred Summoners because they allow me to get early kills pre-6. This in turn gives me an early power spike, which can lead to first blood and a potential snowball. Ignite also increases your kill pressure in the worse of matchups.
Flash is taken as your primary escape summoner and is especially valuable on an immobile champion like Swain. Flash allows you to make clutch escapes, or to get in range for that last auto or ability of a dying enemy.
Ignite suits my Swain playstyle. It offers additional kill pressure, turn around potential and will help me win lane.
Teleport offers Swain good map and global pressure. He can use it to get back to lane and help his allies get kills around the map. Teleport is also good for countering ganks or matching roams.
Ghost allows you to escape skirmishes and move around very quickly. Swain is very predictable, but with a speed boost, it will be harder for the enemy to react or disengage when you want to go in.
Swain’s build depends on multiple variables. He is quite versatile so you can build a lot of different items on him.
In Season 12 Crown of the Shattered Queen has become increasingly popular and for good reason, against any high burst assassin AP or AD it helps give you the survivability needed to turn the tables! This works tremendously well on Swain primarily due to his Ultimate and Conqueror combos.
Another great addition to AP midlaners in Season 12 is Shadowflame. It works tremendously well when combod with Void staff as it offers a fantastic amount of magic penetration while playing aggressive through a Hextech Alternator buy.
Sorcerer's Shoes give you extra pen and movement speed. Penetration is so important on Mages including Swain. It is also very good versus tanky team comps. If the enemy has lots of CC or lots of AP champions, Mercury's Treads. As Swain is pretty immobile and prone to CC, this item will give magic resistance and reduce the duration of major CC tools.
If against a heavy AD team you’ll need to go Zhonya's Hourglass. It offers you extra protection and will help save your life in team fights. It also has good synergy with your Ultimate Demonic Ascension and can allow you to deal damage while you’re in stasis. If the enemy has a lot of sustain, opt for a Oblivion Orb to reduce their sustain here.
Demonic Embrace is a good defensive item that also deals damage. It is good on Swain because it increases his survivability which should help him stay alive in team fights: which will also enable him to deal more damage. Rylai's Crystal Scepter is an option instead of this. It synergises well with your kit and allows you to heavily slow the enemies which can help you catch up to them. If you need to, you can also go for a Morellonomicon to reduce the enemies healing instead of Demonic Embrace.
Your next item is Void Staff. The extra pen will come in handy versus teams and champions that are very tanky. It will also make your abilities deal more damage and break through the enemies defensive stats.
For your final item, you should go Rabadon's Deathcap. It will heavily increase your AP thanks to the raw and Passive stats it provides. In the late game, it will also heavily increase your damage output and make you a real threat in late-game fights.
My preferred Rune setup for Swain takes Conqueror as its keystone. There are many different options for Swain, but it depends on the lane you’re playing him in and your play style. Conqueror suits my Swain playstyle very well.
Conqueror is a good Rune on Swain. He can get stacks really easily, and the extra damage will be very beneficial when going for trades with the enemy. He can keep this rune stacked in team fights too.
Presence of Mind will offer you a lot of extra sustain throughout the game. One of Swain’s biggest issues is his lack of mana. This Rune will help you alot throughout the game.
Legend: Tenacity is a great Rune for a lot of champions, in particular, it is great on Swain. As Swain needs to get into the fight in order to deal damage with his Demonic Ascension, the extra tenacity will make it easier for him to get in and get onto the enemy.
Coup de Grace is a Rune that will help you execute enemies. Coup de Grace allows you to deal increased damage to enemies that are below 40% health. It will help you finish off targets.
For your secondary rune tree, go Sorcery with Manaflow Band and Transcendence. Manaflow Band offers you more mana which helps you throughout the game (again, this helps with his mana problems). Transcendence gives you more ability haste which allows you to use your abilities more frequently.
Swain can target a nearby immobilized enemy and rip a soul fragment out of them. Clicking on an immobilised champion will pull back. Enemy champions who have recently died leave a soul fragment behind for 16 seconds after their death.
Whenever a raven brings a soul fragment to him, he gets some additional healing. Each stack also increases his maximum health..
Swain deals damage in a con. Enemies can be hit by multiple bolts and take bonus damage from his Death's Hand. Swain’s Death's Hand goes through minions and will be his primary tool to poke the enemy down in the lane..
Summons an eye at a target location that grants vision for 2 seconds. It explodes after a short period of time, dealing damage and slowing the target. Your Vision of Empire will have a soul fragment ripped from them. As your Vision of Empire grants vision, it is good to use your Vision of Empire to check unwarded bushes for enemies rather than face checking them..
Swain throws out a wave that deals damage to all enemies it passes through. Once it reaches the maximum distance, the wave returns to him. The first enemy it comes into contact with will take damage and be rooted briefly.
Swain becomes ghosted and gains bonus health. While active, he drains health from nearby enemies (deals damage to them) and heals himself. After a brief delay, Swain can reactive this ability which deals a considerable amount of damage to all enemies in the area of effect.
Every champion has some pros and cons, and Swain is no exception.
★ Very versatile champion. It can be built full damage or off-tank.
★ Although this guide only focused on Swain in 1 role, he can be played in multiple positions.
★ Lots of AOE damage thanks to his Demonic Ascension.
★ Great in team fights with his Ultimate Demonic Ascension.
★ Good pick potential thanks to his Passive and Nevermove.
★ His Vision of Empire can be used to scout unwarded bushes, which can save his life.
★ Good sustain in lane, especially post 6 with his Demonic Ascension.
★ Free health and tanky stats thanks to his Passive.
★ Mana dependent.
★ Has severe mana issues. You can reduce these issues by taking the Runes suggested in this guide.
★ Immobile and squishy, especially in the early game.
★ His Nevermove can be hard to hit.
★ Healing reduction is great versus Swain. It makes his Ultimate Demonic Ascension less potent.
★ Swain heavily relies on Zhonya's Hourglass in the mid and late game.
★ Do not face check bushes in the later parts of the game. Use your Vision of Empire instead!
★ Be on the lookout for the pull aspect on immobilised targets. Try to layer the CC to keep the enemy locked down for as long as possible.
★ You can use surprise combos such as Q>Flash or R>Flash to execute enemies.
★ Play around your Zhonya's Hourglass in the mid and late game. Potentially delay team fights while you wait for it to be up. Not using it or having it available in a team fight will make it really easy for you to die.
★ Fighting in high traffic areas is great for Swain thanks to the AOE damage on his Demonic Ascension. If the enemy is fighting in a tight area, you could also land a multi-person Nevermove root and win the fight.
★ If the enemy has lots of sustain, opting for a Oblivion Orb is a great option to deal with their sustain.
★ Try and avoid reactivating your Demonic Ascension for as long as possible. This will allow you to deal tons of damage to the enemy. However, it is vital that you at least reactivate your Demonic Ascension before you die.
