Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Skill Matchup:
Anivia is not too difficult due to her incredibly squishiness, but her damage early rivals yours. If you get hit by her Q at level 3, be ready to lose over half your HP bar in a second. If you can outmaneuver her Q, not get baited by her Passive, and kill her before she gets HP items, you can kill her the rest of the game without a problem.
Annie
Favor's Zed:
Annie has huge burst, but that's nothing an early Hexdrinker rush can't fix. Your harass range is farther than hers using your Shadows, so just poke her down and keep an eye on her Passive counter. When she can't stun you, all in her and she will be a piece of cake. Watch for ganks, though.
Azir
Zed's Favor:
This chicken is best served salty. This matchup is where excellent shadow control really pays off. If you are able to evade his ult and evade his Q using your W to jump around and punish him while he's defenseless, you can take him down. If he ults before you do, you can use yours to dodge his, and destroy him from there.
Brand
Zed's Favor:
Brand's damage is not a joke. Get caught in a wave of minions at level 6 and you will almost certainly die to him. However, he is squishy, predictable, and short ranged with no escape. If you can dodge or bait out his Q, don't be scared to all in him.
Cassiopeia
Ehh...:
This matchup can turn into either a living hell or a cakewalk for Zed. Cass as a champion is very poorly equipped to deal with Zed, but depending on her skill and the Zed's ability to R well, this can be an easy lane. Use your R to dodge her R. There is a half second where you can react and doing so is very rewarding.
Cho'Gath
**** this ****:
Cho'Gath is literally one of the worst things to go against for Zed. Even if the Cho doesn't use his absurd 600 true damage ult on you, he still won't die, as he can just stack armor and health until he has more than lategame Sion, while still being an AP Carry that silences and devours you. Avoid this if you can.
Diana
Skill Matchup (Caution):
Diana vs Zed is a skill matchup, but still slightly in Diana's favor. Due to how well Diana can stay alive in the early game, and build straight into a Zhonyas or RoA to stay alive, try not to lane vs her if you are not confident. She can and will snowball very hard.
Ekko
Skill Matchup:
Ekko is not an easy champion to deal with because of his stun and ultimate. Ekko is one of the few champs whose kit can actively outplay even a great Zed. Be careful when you ult him, because he can ult to negate all of your Death Mark's effects, or dodge it altogether. Best time to engage on him are when you know you can burst him down with standard E Q autos, forcing him to ult, and then ulting him after hes done so to finish him off, or when he missed his stun and you are not afraid of his own ultimate. Make sure to watch his trail and don't stand in it.
Fizz
Skill Matchup:
Fizz is not well equipped to deal with Zed. The only nuance is the fact that Fizz is able to dodge your Death Mark using his E. The way to work around this is to wait until he Es, bait an E out, or force him to E by hitting him and poking him down. After you've done so you can all in him with your ult without a fear.
Heimerdinger
Boring *** Lane:
You can't fight Heimer early. Don't even try it. However, Heimer can't really fight you either, due to the fact that he needs you to come to him. Instead of fighting or poking him, focus all of your efforts on CS'ing minions, his turrets, and your Raptors jungle camp. By level 7 or so you will preferably be able to kill him through an all in, but cs-ing then roaming is a better option here if youre not confident against Heimer.
Irelia
DON'T DO THIS TO YOURSELF. EVER.
Jayce
Skill Matchup:
Jayce is not difficult to play against, but he is to be respected. Jayce has considerable damage and can all in you at pretty high HP, and early in the game. Dodge his empowered Q's and you'll be alright.
Karthus
Freelo:
Dodge his Q's I guess. If he doesn't take Exhaust against you, there's really nothing he can do. Just don't let him push too hard. Aside from that, he's a sitting duck against you.
Kassadin
Highly in Zed's Favor:
Kass does do some strong damage, but overall his kit really has nothing against yours. You can dodge his main damage ability, Q, using your ultimate, after that, all it takes is a W to where he will R, and a flash if he flashes. Overall he has nowhere to go and no way to run from you. He either misses major cs, gets lots of ganks to help him, or dies to you while trying to cs.
Katarina
Highly Zed's Favor:
Kat is squishy and weak in lane. She can be zoned hard and killed early multiple times. She needs to be in melee range to get any cs, so use this to your advantage. She has no CC to stop you so if you get ahead, feel free to W E Q any time you see her and just keep autoattacking her as she runs away til she dies or ragequits. Use shadows to dodge her R or Q.
Kayle
Kayle's Favor:
This isn't necessarily an impossible matchup, but it's an annoying one that you should avoid if you are not a seasoned Zed main. Kayle's ultimate completely negates yours. She is also good at zoning you from cs due to her E and Q that out-trades you early. The way to work around her ultimate is to damage her regularly enough until she is forced to ult, then you follow up with your ult, or to force her ult out early with yours, then finish her off in a normal way with your Q E autos.
LeBlanc
Zed's Favor (CAUTION):
This lane is not difficult if you know what to do. When she hits level 2, you have to give up cs and just farm with Q until you're level 3. She can destroy you at level 2 if youre not careful. When you hit level 3, you can W E Q her until shes low enough for you to all in and finish her. This is a lane where you have to give up early cs in favor of a spike later on. If you feed her early she will make your life ****.
Lissandra
Lissandra's Favor:
Liss takes no thought to play. All it takes is a jungle gank and for her to R you in place, and you're done for. Avoid this if you can. The only outplay you can do is get QSS, hope for no ganks, and poke her down using your normal abilities. Ulting her is not recommended until you're certain you can kill.
Lulu
**** THIS PIECE OF ****:
Literally the most garbage champion. Lulu takes no skill to play. She can polymorph you to stop your engage, or ult herself into a tank. This champ is an afk in lane, support your team in game, perma-support champ. Just avoid this ****. If you have to play vs it, farm and harass. Don't push too far because a gank will end your life.
Lux
Zed's Favor:
Lux is not difficult to outplay. Her E spam early will be annoying, but killing her should not be difficult. Just dodge or bait out her Q, then she is defenseless against your assault.
Malzahar
Malzahar's Favor:
Malz auto pushes the lane, forcing you to waveclear using abilities instead of harassing him. Walking up to AA to cs is a bad idea due to his silence and space aids. QSS is a must rush 2nd item against him. He will go tanky, so you are unlikely to kill him in lane unless you're much more skilled than him.
You can however kill him before 6 , so use that to your advantage.
Morgana
Zed's Favor:
Morg is very telegraphed and has little outplay potential in her kit. She will hard push the lane all lane phase, so make sure to push it back. Just dodge her Q and youll be fine.
Nidalee
Why would you pick this into Zed unless you want your whole team to flame you
Orianna
Zed's Favor:
Orianna can outplay Zed using her ultimate, but it's the only part of her kit that can, it's far easier for Zed to outplay an Orianna than vice versa. Make sure to either dodge her ult or not get killed by it. You should have no trouble.
Ryze
This is almost as bad as Irelia, don't play this lane matchup. If you have to, just farm and wait for a gank.
Swain
Zed's Favor:
Swain has great sustain, and can all in you if you're caught in his root, but if you can work around those two, he is not difficult to deal with. He is very squishy and has no mobility, so an ignite while dodging his W should be enough to beat him up. He can't cs well, so push him into lane hard early and poke him under tower or in the middle of the lane.
Syndra
Skill Matchup:
I'd like to say this favors Zed, but Syndra has absurd burst in her ultimate. She must not be underestimated. Kit wise, Zed should be able to work around her without too much of a problem. Dodge her ultimate with your R if you can, and use your shadow switching to dodge Q.
Talon
Zed's Favor:
Zed can poke Talon using W E Q out of Talon's reach, making it hard for Talon to do anything against you once you hit level 3. Pre-3, your all in is slightly better than his as long as you manage minion aggro better than he does. This lane can snowball either way, but Zed is better equipped to prevent it if playing smart.
Twisted Fate
Highly Zed's Favor:
TF has nothing against you. His gold card is his only defense. Either that or he asks for a lot of ganks from his jungler. You can dodge his gold card easily using Death Mark, so do so, and hes free. You can kill him pre-6 as well due to his proximity to his cs and lack of mobility.
Veigar
Highly favors Zed:
Veigar is one of the easiest matchups you can have. Harass this guy and all in him as early as you can, he is free food. Almost literally. His early damage is nonexistant. You can just keep shadowing up to him and blowing your load until he either backs or dies. There's no winning lane for him.
Vel'Koz
Zed's Favor:
All skillshots, no problem. Vel'koz does have high damage output, so quick fingers will help. Pretend it's your favorite Japanese bullet hell. If he misses his knockup he has nothing against you so just all in him.
Viktor
Favor's Zed:
Viktor does mad damage, but, Zed does more. Viktor can't duel you well at all, the only thing is you have to avoid his W, so sidestep or time your R and W to get out of it at the right time. An early Hexdrinker is a good idea to negate his burst.
Vladimir
Zed's Favor:
A lot easier than you'd expect. He's squishy and easy to all in early due to his high early game cooldowns and self-damaging W and E. Force out his W, and you have a 12 second window between when his is back up, and when yours is up for use to all in and kill him. He can use troll pool to dodge your R, so beware of that.
Xerath
Zed's Favor:
This guy can poke really hard, but in the end is just a longer ranged brand. Same thing applies. Dodge his 1 stun and then all in him as much as you want. Just dodge his poke abilities, they are pretty devastating.
Yasuo
Zed's Favor:
A highly skilled Yasuo is not to be messed with pre-6. Yasuo has higher damage output than you and can possibly kill you pre-6. Post 6, though, it doesn't really matter. If you haven't died or have already secured a lead, that will only become a stronger lead if you play assertively.
Ziggs
EZ Street:
This guy has what, a tiny knockup? Just don't get hit by that and you're fine. Sidestep his Q's and dont stand too close to your own minions.
Zed is a mid lane AD assassin that focuses on securing a strong laning phase after which he can snowball and roam, securing an early to mid game lead by consistently assassinating the enemy carry during teamfights and skirmishes. Zed played with the correct skill and teamwork can end the game early or snowball your team into lategame with a strong advantage.
He has decent waveclear, good laning, strong midgame, and an extremely high skillcap.
Zed is a mechanical champion, whose performance will depend on the mechanical skill of the player and their knowledge of Zed and his matchups, but has an intuitive kit, so he takes a lot of practice to master, but isn't necessarily impossible to pick up.
Currently Zed has fallen out of the competitive Meta, but he is still considerably powerful in Solo Queue
Good times to pick Zed are:
When the enemy mid is a good matchup for Zed AND at least one of the enemy Top/Jungle are squishy
Your team has AP damage to make up for your lack of AP
When you are confident you will win lane
One Important thing to consider:
If you don't think you can win lane as Zed. Don't pick Zed.
Zed needs to win lane, that's the "easy part". The hard part for Zed comes AFTER laning phase. Therefore, if you don't think you can win lane, go with a different pick until you are skilled enough with Zed to take down any opponent in lane phase. If you are in a matchup where Zed loses 1v1 or you are getting camped, start camping bot lane each time your R is up.
Zed is extremely fun and rewarding, and makes all those flashy Faker plays, so you'll be guaranteed to have a great time playing and mastering him!

WHY THE NEW BUILD WORKS
WHY THE NEW BUILD WORKS
The following build has worked and gotten me excellent results in Diamond games.
Lucidity Boots -> Ghostblade -> BoRK -> Duskblade -> Last Whisper -> Maw (or Guardian Angel for final Item)
The reason this works is because QSS no longer removes Zed ult. All you need to do to kill an ADCarry with this build is R -> E+Auto -> Bork -> Ignite and the damage should be enough without even landing your Q. The full armor pen build is very devastating to squishy champs. This build often forces ADCs to go Steraks or Guardian Angel early, so be careful.
