Introduction

Hey guys, I'm Basketdrive, or Yogi to some of you. I'm a Ex Plat, current Gold 3 (due to elo decay) elo player on NA servers. Kennen used to be my favorite champion. His strong lane presence, versatility and sheer aoe burst makes him a great pick in many comps. So I hope you guys like my Kennen guide.

MY SUMMONER PROFILE

-Requires ability to hit a skillshot

Summoner Spells

Flash: Pretty standard on every champion with a couple exceptions. Great from escaping tricky situations or catching an opponent. With Kennen, it works well with his Ultimate because you can use your Slicing Maelstrom and flash into their team.

Ignite: Great on most all AP mids. Great for kill potential in lane (Main reason why it's taken).

Skill Sequence / Good Skill Combo

SKILLS:

Passive: Mark Of The Storm

Kennen's abilities add Marks of the Storm to opponents which last for 8 seconds. An opponent is stunned for 1 second upon receiving 3 Marks of the Storm. Also, Kennen receives 25 energy. The stun has a diminished effect if applied more than once within 7 seconds.

This is Kennen's "bread and butter" skill. This is what makes his skill set work and what makes him as strong as he is. All of your abilities apply this Mark of Storm to your enemy. You can combo different skills in order to proc this as many times as you can to essentially stun the enemy and kill him.

Q: Thundering Shuriken

Kennen throws a fast moving shuriken towards a location, dealing 75 / 115 / 155 / 195 / 235 (+75% of ability power) magic damage and adding a Mark of the Storm to any opponent that it hits.

This skill is preferred by many people to level up first. I however think it's very very unreliable and against a half decent player mid, you won't be able to hit them. This is pretty much used as a proc for your passive in this build. Even though it doesn't do much damage, it is essential to hit it in order to efficiently stun the opponent as much as you can.

W: Electrical Surge

Passive: Every 5 attacks, Kennen deals magic damage equal to 40 / 50 / 60 / 70 / 80 % of his attack damage and adds a Mark of the Storm to his target.

Active: Surges electricity through all nearby targets afflicted by Mark of the Storm, dealing 65 / 95 / 125 / 155 / 185 (+55% of ability power) magic damage and adding another mark.

This skill separates the good Kennen players from the great. To begin with, his passive on his W is Kennen's secret killer. It pretty much gives you free poke on your opponent without having to hit a skillshot (your q), every 5th auto attack. This can be used greatly in lane to poke down your opponent. It just adds to the plethora of ways to put a Mark on your enemy. The active of this ability is going to be reason you max this ability first. Whenever you get a Mark on an opponent, you can use this ability to add another Mark and do a good amount of damage. The great part is, it has a pretty good range, again allowing you to poke and trade well in lane.

E: Lightning Rush
Kennen gains his base movement speed again as a flat movement speed bonus, as well as 10 / 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 increased Armor and Magic Resistance, and the ability to pass through units for four seconds, but he is unable to attack. Lightning Rush deals 85 / 125 / 165 / 205 / 245 (+60% of ability power) magic damage and adds a Mark of the Storm to any hostile unit he passes through; deals half damage to minions.

Kennen is refunded 40 energy if he passes through an enemy while using this spell, but can only gain this effect once per cast.

This is Kennen's mobility ability. This allows you to escape ganks very easily, lead into to ganks easily, and just move quicky for a short amount of time. If you run through someone, it puts a Mark on them, which again lets yo stun them faster. To top it off, it gives you Armor and MR when used, to make you a little tankier when you use it.

R: Slicing Maelstrom
Kennen summons a magical storm that deals 80 / 145 / 210 (+40% of ability power) magic damage to a random enemy champion near Kennen every few seconds. The storm hits 6 / 10 / 15 times with a 0.5 / 0.4 / 0.33 second delay between each bolt, and cannot hit the same target more than 3 times. A Mark of the Storm is applied to enemies each time they are hit.

This is arguably the strongest skill in the game. Any skill that can hit for more than 600 BASE damage (not including ap damage) to every champ in a large size aoe range,and stun them in less than 5 second is pretty strong if you ask me. And did I forget to mention, it can be chained with Kennen's Electrical Surge to hit everyone with a lighting shock, thus procing another Mark. In all simplicity it is STRONG!

COMBOS (Learning these will make you a great Kennen player):

Lane poke: Q -> W or W(Passive) -> W

Clear Group of Minions: E(Run into all of them) -> W

Early Gank (Without Ultimate): W(Passive) -> E(Run/Flash into them) -> Ignite -> W -> Q

Gank (With Ultimate): W(Passive) -> E(Run/Flash into them) -> R -> Ignite -> W -> Q

Team Fight w/ Zhonyas: W(Passive)[Optional] -> E(Run/Flash into them) -> R -> Zhonyas Hourglass -> W -> Q -> Ignite

Runes

My runes:

Greater Mark of Magic Penetration - This is pretty standard on all ap champs (with the exception of Galio and a few others). It allows for good damage early and mid game, because mr runes are pretty standard on most mid champs.

Greater Seal of Vitality - The seals are a good slot for creativity on AP champs. I like running HP per lv because it makes you a bit more bulky when mid/late game comes around. Armor yellows can be used if you are going top against a heavy AD champ.

Greater Glyph of Magic Resist - These getting very popular on all mid champs. Obviously if you are running Kennen top, chances are you wouldn't run these (unless against Rumble or Vladimir). These give you great survivabilty in lane and allow you to trade efficiently with your lane opponent.

Greater Quintessence of Ability Power - These quints are pretty standard on any AP champ because they give you great early game damage and again help you trade will in lane and hopefully net you a couple kills early.

Masteries

My masteries are pretty standard 21-9-0 masteries, taking the standard ap route in offense. I like to take 9 in defense because it helps your survivabilty early game against ganks.

Items

For Kennen there are many different routes to go when building him, but this is the one that gives me the most success:

Doran's Blade[/h3 - This start is pretty standard nowadays on every good Kennen. Allows for really good poke, efficient trades and a pretty high kill potential in lane (if played right).

Hextech Revolver - I like to get this item early because it provides great sustain in lane. It allows you to trade really well against your lane opponent.

Sorcerer Boots - These are specifically being build right after revolver, but they can be inter woven into your following items. (For example, you can buy a Needlessly Large Rod and then get your Sorc boots, then finish your Zhonyas.)

Zhonyas Hourglass - This item is AMAZING on Kennnen. When you get this item, your team will win team fights if you play it right. The reason this item is so good, is because you can use your ultimate, then use the active on this item. You will become untargetable for a short amount of time, allowing you to annihilate the other team without dying.

Rabadon's Deathcap - This is the strongest AP item in the game. This is the basis on Kennen damage. When you get this item, you will definitely feel your damage skyrocket!

Abyssal Scepter

+

Rylais Crystal Sceptor
- These items are also great items for AP champs. If your enemy team is heavy on magic damage or has a fed AP champ, Abyssal is the way to go. If you want your abilities to slow, and some extra AP and Health then Rylais is your best bet.

Will of the Ancient - This is a great item to end on, because it builds from your former Hextech Revolver and gives great spell vamp to you and those around you.
