Swain is a powerhouse when it comes to a lot of things. Swain has good CC, good burst, and great AOE. Swains ult is his signature move. Swains ult is extremely strong whether that be in lane, or in a teamfight

In the early game, look for combos with your abilites. The most common basic one is his E (root), then his W (Eye), pull the rooted champion into your eye with your passive, then hit them with a Q, and auto away. When you hit 6, its even deadlier. In teamfights, look to hit combos or aoe spells, and also use your ult. When you are in form, what I like to do is run smack dab into the middle of the fight, damaging everyone, and then recasting my ult. Even better is when the enemy team focuses you in your ult, and you can zhonyas to unleash mass mayhem.
