Champion Build Guide

S15.14 #1 Nautilus Guide

By xDopii
Introduction
Hello, I hope to teach you the best ways of playing Nautilus in this guide, so you can get the most out of him yourself! He is one of my most played and a really solid pick most of the time
Pros and Cons

Pros:

+Hard CC
+Good Damage
+Great Engage
+Very powerful ultimate
+Doesn't have to commit to all-in most of the time
+Decent Peeling for allies

Nautilus is a very strong engage tank Support with a lot of CC and damage. He also has decent mobility and a shield to keep him alive. His ultiamte is a very powerful ability that can single handedly win games.

Cons:

-Can be hard to play into certain comps
-Needs follow up to do well, somewhat team reliant
-Hooks can be hard to hit

Hitting Hooks and finding the right target can be rough. When hitting an enemy, you pull yourself towards them meaning that a bad hook can easily be punished and put you in a bad spot
Runes
Aftershock: Increases your armor/magic resist and deals a little bit of damage to nearby enemies after immobilizing them. This is a very good rune if you want to be a bit more tanky and survive more enemy attacks.

Shield Bash: Gain extra armor and mr when using a shield, also increases the damage of your next auto attack when shielding yourself.

Bone Plating: After taking damage, the next few attacks used on you from that source deal less damage. Good for being more tanky in lane and being less punishable.

Unflinching: Increases your Tenacity for every ability and summoner spell on cooldown. Very useful for reducing the duration of the enemies' CC and being more mobile.

Cosmic Insight: Grants 5% CDR, Increases your max CDR by 5%, 5% Item CDR and 5% Summoner Spell CDR

Ultimate Hunter: Reduces your ultimate's cooldown depending on how many enemies you've taken down.
Abilities

Staggering Blow [Passive]

When Nautilus basic attacks an enemy, they are rooted for 0.75s to 1.5s (depending on level). His basic attacks also deal bonus physical damage.

Dredge Line [Q]

Nautilus throws his anchor forward in a line. If it hits an enemy, he pulls them towards him whilst also dashing towards them, dealing magical damage. If it hits a wall, Nautilus pulls himself towards it reducing half of its mana cost and half the cooldown. You can pull yourself toward a wall while CCed. You can also use abilities mid-hook such as R, Zhonyas, E, Locket, etc.

Titan's Wrath [W]

Natilus shields himself for 6 seconds. While the shield is active, his basic attacks deal bonus magical damage and hit all enemies around his target.

Riptide [E]

Nautilus creates 3 waves of explosions around him. Each explosion deals damage to enemies and slows them.

Depth Charge [R]

Nautilus selects a target. He then fires a shockwave that chases the target while dealing damage to every enemy it hits. When it reaches the target, they are knocked up into the air and stunned while also taking magical damage. The shockwave will begin in front of nautilus, meaning if you hook + select a far away target, you will hit both the target and the enemy you just hooked. This can be very useful for hitting multiple enemies with R
Laning Tips
Laning: This is where most Nautilus players fail, by overforicng too much and putting themselves behind. Nautilus does not automatically equal non-stop engage or "unkillable". It is key to know when to start an engage, as well as position yourself well enough to soak damage for your ADC.

Bush Control: In most matchups it is recommended to take bush control, however against most other engage champions (such as Rell or Thresh) you will have a hard time taking the bush, so don't be afraid to give it up and play for disengage. Your hook can cancel a lot of engages (Pyke, Rakan, etc.) and can be used well defensively

In lane, I recommend looking for hooks (without all-in). Make sure to not allow the enemy to proc your bone plating, and keep your aftershock ready. Look for hooks followed up by passive + E, using Shield bash and all possible damage from your runes. Afterwards: walk away

Never make the mistake of staying too much around an enemy. Nautilus' kit is burned immediately when he starts an engage, you should not stick around and allow enemies to hit you for free! After you get hook, passive and shield bash damage off, look to disengage unless the enemy is killable: in that case continue chasing but use your health carefully
