I've had multiple friends say that the Hextech Gunblade isn't the best choice on Jax.
I think they've said that because Jax is much more focused on basic attacks than abilities, so the ability power isn't that necessary, and neither is the spellvamp.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have the Gunblade on him, but it's a choice worth reconsidering. The Blade of the Ruined King's active pretty much achieves the same thing as the Hextech Gunblade. Quoted from the Hextech Gunblade:

Deals 150 (+ 40% AP) magic damage and slows the target champion's movement speed by 40% for 2 seconds. 60 second cooldown. (700 range)

As opposed to Blade of the Ruined King:

Drains target champion, dealing 15% of the champion's maximum Health in physical damage and healing you for the damage dealt. Additionally you steal 30% of their movement speed for 3 seconds - 90 second cooldown. (450 range)

As you can see, the Gunblade has a bigger slow and longer range, and is based off of your AP, which on Jax is not a lot. On BoRK, the range is less, but the damage is based off of the opponent's health, which completely destroys tanks, which Jax can have a bit of trouble with. Also, you don't just slow them, you also steal that movement speed for not 2, but 3 seconds. And BoRK also gives you the health taken.

I suggest you reconsider the Hextech Gunblade and replace it with something with magic resist, like Spirit Visage (which actually gives the same amount of spellwamp and more lifesteal than Hextech Gunblade)

I've made my own guide, if you'd like to check it out. I'm not the best player, but I'm still learning :)

I can agree that the active is identical and I'm glad you pointed it out, but in all fairness I think that it wont matter much. I didn't go with a Hextech Gunblade for the active effect. I added it for the stats. As you pointed out Jax is auto-attack based and shouldn't rely on abilities.

You're completely right. But you're looking at the complicated things. If we look at the base stats that a Hextech Gunblade gives us, it gives us 45 AD and 65 AP. When Jax gets his ultimate, Master-At-Arms his 3rd auto attack deals extra AP damage. His Empower goes off of AP as well so that's a nice bonus. The active effect is just if you wanna get pure tanks out the way. The spellvamp I completely forgot about. Jax barely benefits off of it but in all fairness...

My suggestion is; Build damage rather than survivability so you can execute the threats faster.
