Introduction

Hi, My name is TheExfear and welcome to my Thresh guide. I've been playing League of Legends since early Season 3 and i have gathered a lot of experience in all lanes. Through out the years I have changed my main role 3 times - from jungler to AD carry to support. Why ? I don't know either. But it seems that bot side of the map have always pulled me there. Another reason for that is of course Thresh. He was the first champion, who made me buy it instantly. His long range skills to hook, pull, organizing plays with jungler, dealing quite a bit of damage was a top-rate support I've always wanted. Of course Thresh is quite a hard-to-master champion, but if mastered he can be shining like a diamond.

So I've made this guide to everyone, who wants to learn all the secrets of Thresh and use it optimally.

Pros/Cons

Pros
  • Really Fun to play
  • Game-changing playmaker
  • Can be played aggressively and passively(depends on play style)
  • Great roam/engage potential
  • Spell kit is made as well as for engage and disengage
  • Can save many lives
Cons
  • Mechanics knowledge needed
  • Skill shot dependant (3 skill shots, except ultimate)
  • Not naturally tanky
  • No sustain in lane

As you can see Thresh is quite reliable champion to play. Ability to save overextended team mates or to engage is a big plus for team composition, except for one thing - he doesn't have natural tankiness. Yes. Thresh has to collect his passive Damnation souls to keep his armor up. The good side is that he is receiving the same amount of AP as well. So that is good for him, because he can go tanky.

Summoner Spells

I prefer this Summoner spell almost always. Thresh is really aggresive champion to play and Ignite really helps with those lvl 2 engages or vs heal champions like Soraka, Nami.

After Exhaust nerf this Summoner spell is more rare. It has damage reduction and movement speed reduce. I play it when enemy team have some really high burst damage champions, long duration ultimates, for example: Zed, Malzahar, Katarina.

Abilities

Thresh's passive is so called "Soul catcher". He can absorb souls dropped by dead enemies or minions, jungle monsters. This is your main source of bonus armor and ability power and W shield. Every soul you absorb you get 0.75 Armor, AP and 1 point into W shield. Catch every one of them.

This is the Thresh core ability, it's where he shines the most. After a 0.5-second delay, Thresh throws out his scythe in a line and tethers himself to the first enemy hit. After that you can reactivate skill to drag yourself to the enemy. To make good use of this ability learn it's skillshot speed.
Tip: In laning phase every ADC knows that he can juke your Q ability, so try to predict the movement he will make, when he tries to dodge you (mindblow). For example in team fights people have very slow reaction times, because of the chaos that's going, prediction is not needed there, just go for it. I have seperate Tips and tricks block that can explain it more advanced way.

Oh... this ability, ability to save lives... Thresh throws his latern to wanted area, causing the first ally stepped on it to get bonus shield for a period of time, also Ally can click on your latern to dash to your position. Very useful skill as a support.

Then I say Thresh needs good learn of his mechanics, this ability needs that. Thresh sweeps his chain in a broad line towards a target direction. Enemies hit take magic damage, are knocked in the direction of the chains, and are slowed afterwards for 1 second. Using the correct timing, you can deny Lee Sin Sonic Wave, or Tristana Rocket Jump, Katarina Death Lotus.

Thresh ultimate is really good for escaping and at the same time to engage. Thresh spawns 5 walls around him, damaging(100% AP) and slowing enemy, who passes through one wall, 99% for 2 sec.

Runes

For the runes you should almost always go Resolve rune and pick secondary Inspiration. Resolve will passively give you 130+ Health so that's realy good for us.

In Resolve side Aftershock rune point is good for Thresh because it is a champion, who can't always stay by the ADC. It will leave your ally defenseless in comparison with other choise( Guardian), but it will make your successful engages even more powerful.

Second point will go for Font of Life. It actually really simple. It makes your trades a little bit more better for your adc. Third point is actually really one sided - Conditioning. This rune point stands out of the rest because of its simpliness. Iron Skin will be useless late game, because for that extra 5% armor bonus you always need to use somekind of healing consumption potion, so that is a no no. The last point for Resolve goes with Second Wind. It makes your trades even more better. Overgrowth seems overpowered too, but if you calculate the cs your ADC makes (~200 by the start of late game = ~200hp+), it is starting to be not soo good choice anymore.

Inspiration side is quite simple -
Biscuit Delivery is really good sustain rune point and actually gives us more permanent mana. Future's Market is a good choice for support type champions in my opinion because of early item access.

Warding

Warding is the one of the most important thing for support to do. Wards determine your gameplay, strategy, With them you easily can notice enemy jungler coming to your lane, or planting that deep ward for top laner to teleport. Here some pictures to see where to put wards more frequently and so on. I remind you, that every ward is supposed to be placed with a question in your head "why should i put it there ?", For example don't waste your Sightstone by planting two wards in your lane bushes and just one ward in the river or tri-bush. Strategize, predict how enemy jungler moves by looking where he started his Jungle route. Also try to think of best time using wards, because if you see that enemy jungle is in toplane, why putting a ward in river is a good idea anyway. Don't waste ward time. Evelynn is not invisible pre-6 anymore so you don't need sell 2 start Health Potion vs early game Control Ward.

Gameplay

Early game:

In early game try to make the plays happen. If you are confident and really trust your teammate, your rush level 2 and try to grab enemy for flash, or flash + exhaust + heal and lastly maybe even a kill
Else, just try to poke with your E passive, trade once in a while, Organize a gank with your W ability

Mid game:

This is where you fall of a bit. Thresh does not have that goody Taric or Braum base stats, everyone will start building armor, health, damage. Try to go through this phase passively and at the same time aggressively, if you are ahead, you won some kills, just use your lead to victory. If you have an engager, peel for your ADC, if not, try to do 2 jobs at the same time - start a fight, according at the situation decide to peel ADC or go in deep.Focus on objectives

Late game:

This is the time then you almost have your full build, always group up, focus on objectives, try to catch all those overextending opponent you have. Fully peel your ADC in team fights, he will doo most of the team damage right now.

This was my Thresh guide, simple is the best, learn from pro's, change your mindset, stand high. Thresh is a hard champ to master, but if learned, he shines like a diamond.
I'm planning on expanding Gameplay section shortly after playing more Season 8. I'll add Synergy tab as well.
Critisize, discuss with me, let's all make a great guide together.
