Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
You outroam her and can very easily solo kill her as long as you dodge her bind. You can take Cleanse in this matchup just to be safe.
Karthus
This is generally an easy matchup as long as the Karthus isn't godlike at landing his Q. You outroam him so use this to your advantage.
Annie
Shove the wave very hard and roam in the early to mid game, Annie has very bad waveclear. You can kill her without her ult but unless you have a lead don't risk fighting her alone post-level 6.
Yasuo
Avoid Yasuo at all costs. He has a very high kill pressure in lane vs you as his entire kit is designed to counter yours. He can also match your waveclear and will not allow you to shove the wave into him. If you somehow got stuck in this infernal matchup just farm under tower and ask for ganks. Take exhaust.
Kassadin
Kassadin is one of your hardest counters. He will outscale you into the late game. His silence will put your W on cooldown if active and once he has ult he can easily all in you with little consequence. He cannot kill you very easily pre level 6 so focus on pushing and roaming or maybe getting a lucky kill if he wastes his abilities on minions. Buy Abyssal Mask instead of Hextech GLP-800.
Fizz
Taking Exhaust and starting Abyssal Mask is a great idea in this matchup. Fizz has terrible waveclear early game so focus on pushing and roaming. Fizz can easily kill you post-level 6 so take caution when shoving the wave. You can bully the Fizz hard during level 1-2 so while shoving the wave try to poke him and punish him for going in to farm. If the Fizz takes Teleport punish him for it early and shove the wave hard, he can't 100-0 you without his ult or ignite early game.
Katarina
Take Exhaust and start Abyssal Mask. Katarina has insanely high kill pressure after level 3 so be careful when shoving the wave. Katarina's has decent waveclear when she Q-E's the wave but if she does that punish her and trade against her when shes farming. Try to hold on to your ult or stun to cancel her ult in teamfights.
Ziggs
Skill Matchup. His W deactivates your W if active. Ziggs is completely skillshot reliant so there is potential for outplay. You can solo kill him in lane but you outroam him so make that a priority and try to push and roam.
Orianna
Skill Matchup. You are stronger than her pre 6 however she outscales you. Your waveclear is unparalleled by Orianna so focus on pushing and roaming but if she tries to trade with you take the fight as it is winnable if you play it right.
Azir
Skill Matchup. Azir outscales you into the late game. Azir has the upper hand 1v1 but it's definitely winnable. He has slow wave clear early game so just focus on pushing and roaming. Be careful to not get Shuffle combod by him in teamfights.
Ahri
Skill Matchup. Ahri has the upperhand post-level 6 because her ult makes it very hard for you to land your Q and your stars onto her. She cannot match your waveclear so push and roam if you think you cannot dodge her charm kill her.
LeBlanc
The LeBlanc matchup can either be insanely frustrating or not that bad depending on their skill. If they happen to be good then you're in trouble because she has so much burst damage and mobility in her kit that makes it nearly impossible to solokill her unless you have a lead. Focus on roaming because she has the upperhand when fighting you 1v1. Be careful when shoving the wave because her kill pressure is pretty high. Take exhaust vs her if you want to be safe.
Akali
You can completely bully her pre-level 6 so focus on shoving while poking her with your stars and try to get good roams to the sidelanes. After level 6 she will obliterate you by sticking onto you with her multiple ult charges. Exhaust is a good choice in this matchup to prevent her from all inning you post-level 6. Build Abyssal Mask instead of Hextech GLP-800.
Diana
Similar to Akali, she is very reliant on her ult to kill you. Build Abyssal Mask first. After level 6 try not to get hit by her crescent ability because if she lands it she can easily burst you down with her ult.
Lucian
Lucian has high kill pressure and will usually run ignite. You can solo kill him but if they're good they will use their E to dash into your inner ring, avoiding your stars. Focus on pushing and roaming. Build Ninja Tabi and take Exhaust to be safe.
Zed
Zed has high kill pressure in lane but if you play it right you can make it very hard for him to do so. Zed is very mechanically demanding therefore you can outplay him. If zed uses his W then punish him because without his ult he cannot close the gap to you. Take Exhaust, build Ninja Tabi and build Zhonyas Hourglass. You can rush Zhonyas Hourglass but it's not really necessary most of the time I would recommend buying it after your boots. Hes still very slippery and hard to kill alone so focus on roaming.
Malzahar
Malzahar is very weak without his ult so focus on bullying him in lane while shoving the wave and outroam him. With his ult he can easily kill you so try to keep track of when he uses it. His ult prevents the use of summoner spells so take Ghost for teamfights unless you are confident that you can predict his ult with Barrier.
Corki
Skill Matchup. When dueling him he will usually W into your inner range so you cannot hit your stars onto him, try to ult him back or use ghost to kite away from him if you dont have ult. Your waveclear is superior so still focus on pushing and roaming.
Anivia
Skill Matchup. You can easily kill her alone if you dodge her stun which has a very small hitbox. You can also easily kill her passive Eggnivia as long as you have mana because unlike burst mages your abilities do not have long cooldowns. Anivia scales pretty hard and can be scary late game though.
Brand
Dodge his stun and you can kill him very easily. He can be scary in teamfights though.
Taliyah
Skill Matchup. She can match your roaming with her passive and her ult but she cannot shove the minion wave as hard as you. Solo fighting her can go either way, She needs to land her abilities to be a threat to you.
Morgana
She cannot match your waveclear and you can easily kill her if you dodge her Q. You also outscale her. Cleanse is a good option since the only way she will kill you is by landing a really good bind onto you.
Fiddlesticks
His entire kit counters yours. His Fear will disable your W and so will his Silence. It's also very hard to kill him alone because of his drain. His waveclear competes well with yours but he has very low kill pressure and has low range so he is not much of a threat in lane as long as you don't go after him. Focus on ccing him in teamfights. Cleanse is a good option.
Galio
He can be pretty annoying due to how tanky he is and the cc that he has. His ult also allows him to follow up on your roams. If he has a lot of mr try to get a Liandry's Torment and a Void Staff for teamfighting and you will be able to melt him.
Cassiopeia
Skill Matchup. She needs to land her Q to do a lot of damage so try to dodge it. Try to dodge her ult too. She will outscale you so focus on roaming.
Syndra
Skill Matchup. Dodge her E and you can usually solokill her. She has pretty bad waveclear so focus on pushing and roaming. You can start Abyssal Mask which will help her ult from doing too much damage to you.
Ekko
Ekko has great waveclear and very high kill pressure. Always start Abyssal Mask and be very cautious when shoving the wave. If you think he can kill you then play it safe and ask for a gank.
Talon
Talon has very good waveclear, can match your roaming and has insane kill pressure in lane. Take Exhaust, Buy Ninja Tabi and get a Zhonya's Hourglass at some point in the game.
Xerath
Skill Matchup. Dodge his abilities and you win. You also have more waveclear so take advantage of that and roam a lot.
Swain
Bully Swain early game because he scales very well and gets really tanky. Roam a lot.
Gangplank
Skill Matchup. He can match your roaming with his ult and solofighting him can go either way.
Twisted Fate
Skill Matchup. Run Cleanse. Once you get his gold card out of the way you can punish him. He can match your roaming with his ult and has decent waveclear. Low kill pressure though.
Lissandra
Cleanse is great against Lissandra. She can be scary in lane because of her mobility and cc. Focus on pushing and roaming.
Heimerdinger
His stun is unreliable and has very low mobility. You can bully him in lane and do more in teamfights than him.
Ryze
Skill Matchup. Try not to get caught out by his root.
Viktor
Viktor has high kill pressure in lane. He does a lot of damage so make smart trades.
Vel'Koz
Dodge his E and you can generally bully him in lane and shove the wave into him.
Veigar
Very weak during the laning phase you can bully him hard. Take cleanse because his E can be very obnoxious when hes trying to back off away from you, it will also allow you to dodge his combo if you cleanse the stun. Veigar scales very hard into late game and becomes more of a threat when he hits level 6.
Aurelion Sol's most powerful trait is his roaming. His roaming is unparalleled by any other champion. This is because of his E passive which gives him a lot of movement speed when running in a striaght line and his E active that allows him to fly over terrain making for good ganks. The key to succeeding in the laning phase is by finding ways to shove the minion wave into the enemy laner's tower by using your Celestial Expansion to give you enough time to roam to sidelanes. Most Aurelion Sol players try a technique that requires you to hard shove the first 3 waves while using your corrupting potions, this will make you level 3 and you should usually have enough gold to buy a dark seal and maybe a control ward. The ideal scenario would be to return to lane and continue to push the wave to roam to top or bot lane but there are many champions that make it very hard for Aurelion Sol to do this so take a look at the champion matchup guide above to learn how to make the best of your counters.
Teamfighting
Teamfighting
Aurelion Sol is scary in teamfights because his W creates a zone that you do not want to get close to because with the right items his stars do a LOT of damage. Aurelion Sol also brings a decent amount of CC with his Q and ult. While Aurelion Sol brings much to a team he is very underwhelming in a team without a frontline, this is because assassins can jump onto Aurelion Sol and burst him down if nobody stops them, this is why Aurelion Sol is very team dependent and is not one of the best solocarry champions in the game.
Items
Items
Core
Corrupting Potions help Aurelion Sol deal with his mana issues early on when he doesn't have any mana items yet. This also allows him to shove the first 3 waves to rush a dark seal buy at level 3.
The Dark Seal is great because it synergizes very well with Corrupting Potions which you will be starting with on Aurelion Sol, it also gives you the ability to buy a Mejai's Soulstealer if you have the stacks on your Dark Seal.
Hextech GLP-800 is perfect for Aurelion Sol because not only does it give him all the stats that he needs but it also comes with a great active effect which is something you can use when target are in your inner range.
Boots Of Swiftness are the ideal boots for Asol because more movement speed indirectly translates into more damage by letting you land your stars on enemy champions.
Rylai's Crystal Scepter works very well with Aurelion Sol because it gives him more utility for teamfights, basically providing a large aoe slow as long as Aurelion can keep his Celestial Expansion on.
More Damage
Liandry's Torment can almost be considered a core item due to the 3 item power spike Aurelion Sol gets when combined with Hextech GLP-800 and Rylai's Crystal Scepter because all 3 of these items give Health and AP. In addition Liandry's Torment also synergizes very well with Rylai's Crystal Scepter.
Void Staff is a good choice when the enemy team is building MR because when Aurelion Sol has a Void Staff in conjunction with a Liandry's Torment he can quite literally obliterate even tanks.
The AP that Rabadon's Deathcap offers is just too good to pass up for late game so if you don't need any defensive items try to make room for a last item Deathcap.
Defensive Options
Abyssal Mask is an amazing replacement for Hextech GLP-800 if you are stuck in a bad ap assassin matchup. While you're missing out on some good AP, the passive 10% increased magic damage effect helps make up for it in return for some MR.
Zhonya's Hourglass is a must have against teams with AD assassins. With the Season 8 rune Perfect Timing, Zhonya's Hourglass is even more accessible to you, giving even more reason to buy one.
Banshee's Veil is a good option in case the enemy team is composed of a lot of AP or if an AP builder on their team got fed. The passive effect is very nice too.
Summoner Spells
Summoner Spells
Flash is a must have for Aurelion Sol. Ghost is your go to summoner spell, on Aurelion Sol movement speed is a combat stat, ghost helps you weave in and out of harm's way in teamfights. Exhaust is great when laning against assassins with high burst damage because it allows you to survive their all in. It also helps you land your stars on targets because of the slow that comes with it. Cleanse is amazing in some matchups like Veigar or Lux to get you out of bad positions.
