Not Updated For Current Season
This guide has not yet been updated for the current season. Please keep this in mind while reading. You can see the most recently updated guides on the browse guides page
Camille is not an incredibly tough matchup, but Lulu may find herself struggling against a good Camille that knows how to abuse Lulu's early game cooldowns. Just play smart, poke her off farm early and make sure you beware of her engage potential for ganks.
Cho'Gath
Cho'gath doesn't have much kill pressure against Lulu, but all he needs to survive the lane are some Mercury's Treads since we won't be able to kill him unless he plays incredibly poorly. I'd recommend pushing him under and roaming mid or helping with jungle invades often.
Darius
Approach this matchup with confidence but caution. You can bully Darius fairly well, but your ability to do that depends entirely on how well you avoid getting hooked in. If you get hooked, shield yourself, Polymorph him, land your Q and just walk away and pray he didn't have help.
Dr. Mundo
Another lane with 0 kill pressure on either side. Not incredibly difficult, but you can push him and roam fairly easy.
Fiora
Fiora is one melee champion you really can't bully too well as Lulu. She will likely push you under turret after she picks up her Tiamat, but you can prevent her effectiveness with your anti-dive kit. Just keep her from getting too strong and keep tabs on her in teamfights.
Galio
Another mid-level threat. He will likely push you under turret and keep you there. His magic shield prevents your passive from doing a whole lot and your auto's won't be enough to trade properly with him.
Gangplank
Simple matchup. Bully him off farm, don't get hit by barrel explosions. Easy enough.
Garen
If he abuses your high-early level CD's and sustains with his passive, he can be fairly threatening. Just turtle under pressure if he's aggressive and you'll contribute more in teamfights later. Don't Polymorph him during his E, it won't stop it.
Gnar
Heavy skill matchup. Lulu can abuse him in mega form, but can't do much to him in his mini form. He can bully and dive you with fair ease, beware this matchup and don't use your W unless you absolutely need to.
Illaoi
Laning, low threat. Just use your minion wave to avoid her spirit pool and keep her from gathering too many tentacles. In a teamfight, reserve your polymorph for her after she ultis so she doesn't dunk on your whole team for free.
Irelia
You can easily bully her, but once she hits her Trinity Force, she will outright beat you in a 1v1. Not a hard lane matchup otherwise.
Jarvan IV
Dangerous matchup. Lulu will bully him early in lane, but he will kill fairly quick after a single back and his Cataclysm. Just play the lane safe and don't take bad trades.
Jax
Jax is fairly weak in early laning so you'll likely bully him. Polymorph him when he goes for his Dodge/Stun and take good trades. Beware of ganks if you push as always.
Jayce
Your worst lane matchup. He will push and bully you without much you can do. Your Polymorph doesn't cancel his electric zone, so if you don't play perfectly, you'll lose every trade in lane and he has strong kill pressure. I recommend putting an early second point in E to withstand trades and saving the W to run away.
Kayle
You won't kill her, she won't kill you. In this guide, you're essentially the same character with different kiting utilities (and she outscales you into late game). Don't sit in minions and take her empower auto's AOE, trade is standard.
Kennen
Kennen is pretty strong against Lulu. If he procs his stun, you'll lose a trade so make sure you watch for his empowered auto and use minions to dodge his Q using minions. If he engages with his R + Protobelt, blow all your CD's fast to get out of it.
Kled
This is a very rough matchup. Good Kleds will Joust through your trades and abuse his own passive on dives to get through Lulu's potential. Polymorph doesn't do too much to mitigate his power and won't cancel the Beartrap on a Rope if it lanes. Play around his Q, abuse him after his W is down and beware of his one-item spike with Merc Treads and a Black Cleaver.
Maokai
Another "farm it out" lane. No kill pressure, just beware of his gank assist. Save your W for running away from him, not Polymorphing him.
Mordekaiser
One of your easiest matchups. He has virtually no way to get on top of you. Just don't be dumb and you'll win pretty handily in lane.
Nasus
Hold W for his ulti. You can bully him a bit, but if he can farm under turret, you won't be able to stop his Q stacking. It's a rough mid-game matchup but you can fight him early.
Ornn
He can run through you with his W's shield and invulnerability. Save your Polymorph to prevent him from getting the second hit of his ultimate when possible. He won't lose trades and will push you after level 3. Beware him building MR without backing and always keep track of his item.
Pantheon
Incredibly bad lane matchup. His Passive blocks autos and after level 3 he will win all trades and because you're squishy, can kill you with fair ease if you're unsafe. Just let him shove, freeze on your side, farm under turret when necesssary, and wait until he inevitably falls off while keeping him away from your carries if possible.
Poppy
Farm it out, avoid walls. Fairly self-explanatory matchup.
Quinn
Another tougher matchup for Lulu. Try to avoid her Blind at all costs, stay out of her vault range, and just scale up against Quinn. As a side note - always remember to ping missing on Quinn as soon as she leaves your vision in top, as her post-6 roams are incredibly dangerous.
Renekton
You can bully Renekton fairly well if done right. As always against any Renekton, abuse his long early cooldowns and make sure you avoid getting dashed on while he has +50 on his rage bar. Standard trade pattern works just fine against him, and I recommend taking the Fleet Footwork specifically against him for sustain in case of aggression.
Riven
Same advice for Riven as I gave for Renekton, except her Cooldowns are much shorter so post 6 you need to beware. If you sit back far enough and avoid letting her engage on you with a delayed Q, you can win the lane with safety. Should be a skill matchup.
Rumble
Take an early second point in E to shield through his Flamespitter. Sit behind minions to avoid his E, standard trade pattern on your part. Abuse his Q's cooldown and try to trade in-between the short shield his W gives him. Beware of dives, don't enter the choke point between the wall and your turret for any reason unless he's already burned his ultimate.
Shen
Fairly easy lane for Lulu. Don't get taunted, use standard trade patterns and try to Polymorph him if you catch him trying to Ulti to a teammate.
Singed
He will proxy your waves for free if he's smart. In lane, you can pretty much avoid most of what he wants to do as far as trading if any at all. I'd recommend looking up anti-Singed guides before using my advice for this one, as they'll be much more useful.
Sion
Not an awful matchup, but his natural tankiness and shielding will let him take minimal damage from your early attacks. You'll likely push him early, so beware of his strong gank assist. Don't try to polymorph him out of his ultimate, it won't work.
Teemo
He does more damage than you early and his Blinding Dart messes with your trade pattern. Early on, he'll bully you but you can come out of it later. Buy an Oracle Alteration as soon as you can to avoid Mushrooms in lane and in teamfights.
Trundle
You can bully him, but beware of his strong sustain after first back. Mercury's Treads + Vampiric Scepter will be all he needs to sustain through the laning phase while keeping up with you. Can be incredibly dangerous if you let him set up an advantageous pillar, so don't trap yourself along the river walls or in choke points on the dive.
Tryndamere
Don't let him get on top of you, you won't have an issue. If he dives, polymorph him and get as far away as possible and try to cheese him from using his ulti. Otherwise, you can bully him early on. Another matchup I recommend putting a second point in E early for.
Urgot
Urgot is a mid-level threat to Lulu. As long as you avoid taking random poke from the shotgun knee passive and dodge his Q's you'll bully him. If he gets to you, you might die post-6. Should be a standard trade, farm up lane otherwise. Try to bait his ulti while you're in it's kill range, then use your own immediately if it hits to delay the execution or deny it entirely.
Vayne
Second worst matchup you'll have. There aren't any advantageous trades you can get in this lane. try to abuse the minimal cooldown on her roll to land Qs and freeze on your side. Recommend getting early Ninja Tabi and probbly the Iceborn Gauntlet if she's too aggressive.
Wukong
Fairly standard, make sure you don't panic and waste any abilities on his clone. If he goes in for a trade, shield yourself and go for a Q, W yourself to keep up and stay on him to abuse his long cooldowns.
Xin Zhao
Beware of his incredible burst. Could be a pretty rough lane. Second point in E early to balance out the trades, definitely recommend Ninja Tabi for lane phase. You'll be pretty safe against his dives, but always be smart about it.
Yasuo
Intense Skill matchup. He'll likely pressure you under turret after first back, and trading can be hard becuase of his Windwall. Always abuse that cooldown, and make sure you time your Polymorph well (if you buffer it against him dashing in with the empowered Q, you can prevent him from ulting). You won't be able to kill him without help unless he plays poorly.
Yorick
Lulu plays fairly well into Yorick. You can pressure him, and as long as you dodge the ability that aggros his ghouls on you, you'll survive the lane. Use your W to speed outside the indicator of his Wall (or give you the attack speed to quickly break it if you wind up inside it). You'll lose the 1v1 after he gets his Trinity Force, so beware of that power spike and always try to avoid the Maiden's range.
Hi everyone, I'm GlitterLancer and I've been maining Lulu since I started playing in late season 5. I'm not specifically high ranked (peaked in Gold this season), but after years of playing this champion I have a particularly high knowledge of the champion and have tried her in all roles and with multiple builds in each role. This build is my favorite so far using the new Runes Reforged update and is very fun for casual play (which we'll probably see a lot of for the next couple of weeks with Ranked Queues disabled). With that in mind, I've had a fair amount of success on similar builds for Lulu in ranked over Season 7. Let's get right into this (I will only be giving random laning and teamfight advice for the next and final 2 chapters of this guide, as I have given more matchup specific advice in the champion matchups section)).
Laning: Early and Roaming
Laning: Early and Roaming
Lulu top is particularly good early in this position given that most of her matchups are melee champions. The idea is to get a strong early trade or two, shove the opponent off of farm using the threat of your range, and then roam and gain as much vision as possible. It is for this reason that Lulu will excel in assisting junglers in the early stages of the game, both for invades and against invades. That being said, she's a squishy little mage who has lots of tools to prevent and escape ganks, but if she's caught too far up on a high-CC matchup, she'll likely go down fairly quick.
In disadvantageous matchups, you'll want to be able to farm under turret fairly well becuase her bad matchups are MISERABLE. With her passive, her autos do more damage than normal, so melee minions go down with one auto after 2 turret shots, and with the W empowerment, she can get an auto on each ranged and take them down as the turret targets them.
Use your pressure wisely and look for good teleport opportunities, especially towards bottom side where adding a high-utility damage dealer to the mix can certainly net a kill or 2. Roam mid with your jungler if you push in hard, or use that advantage to steal a buff with your jungler. Never roam alone with no vision either, as she will die fairly fast if caught out.
Post-Laning Phase
Post-Laning Phase
Depending on your matchup and outcome of the early game, the post-laning phase can be wildly different for a Lulu top laner. Below I will list some brief macro-level strategies for several situations to give you a mindset:
You and Team Generally Did Well:
- By this point you should have 2 parts of attack speed and, assuming you did well along with your team in lane, can press the advantage. Your team should group together and leave you in the side lane of choice to pressure turrets. In this situation beware of missing enemies in numbers of 2 or more, but sit in the lane safely, ward up, and keep pushing minion waves back at their turret. You can join in teamfights if the enemy plays towards you, or push the turret to give your team an advantage should the enemy show up for a 5v4.
You Did Well, but Team Did Not:
-This is the situation of a "feelsbadman" type feel. You've bullied your enemy laner and kept them down, while gaining an advantage for yourself, but your team just couldn't hold it together. In a situation like this, take a deep breath, don't tilt, and start to roam heavily and contribute to teamfights. It will be an uphill battle as always, but never give up, keep track of your sidelanes, and turn the game around as best you can.
You Did Poorly but the Team Did Well:
-to follow up on a poor laning phase, Lulu wants to join her team. The side lane is lost and you can depend on your utility to get your team through fights and pressure other areas of the map. Occasionally check to make sure your side lane doesn't get completely overpressured by pushing out minion waves. If your team did well enough and continues at that pace, you should be able to at least contribute to the game with your versatile, support-like kit. Stay tiltproof everyone.
You and the Team Both Did Poorly:
-As a squishy top laner who last lane and looks to a fiery, blood spattered battlefield to see the rest of her comrades doing just as bad, if not, worse; the end is pretty much in sight. What you can do is stick to your lane and help fights as much as possible. Try to continue applying pressure to your lane to draw attention safely and have your team play smart macro if possible.
(no shame in surrendering in normals/casual games if your team is completely tilted and you just want out).
Both Teams went Very Even Early Game:
This is a situation with no one true answer. Continue playing at your pace, read the map as well as you can (ie, if the enemy team groups, gauge whether your team needs you or if you can apply sidelane pressure). If your team wants to group, follow along and aim for objectives to get ahead. As always, play skirmishes and fights safely and intelligently.
Final Words
Final Words
This is just a fun little guide I thought I'd make for those interested in Lulu outside of support role. I enjoy my main so I'll share my little bit of insight/experience with everyone. Keep in mind this is a fairly casual build, I don't necessarily recommend it for every game (Lulu is an incredibly versatile champion with infinite possibilities as far as builds, roles, and capabilities, so have fun with her, use her as you see fit (but please try out my Semi-Auto Lulu Top :) )
