Shaco - The area control puppet master - S14

By glimppi
Who am I ?
Hello, I am Quatse#EUW, and I have been playing Shaco for a very long time. It has been my favorite champion since I started the game in season 2.
I have mostly been playing League very casually with friends.
That is how I found my love towards support role, and of course I wanted to play my favorite champion there.
I am not an OTP, and I play lots of different champions.
I have total of ~2.5 million Shaco points combined on few accounts.
I don't really play any other role other than support.
I'd say my best champions would be: Shaco, Pyke, Pantheon and Ashe.

My name (Quatse) comes from Vancouver Aquarium sea otter Quatse.
I have been following their live stream and online content for years.
Sea otters have helped me with my mental disorders.

Here is picture of Quatse as a baby:

Quatse:

I hope you enjoyed Quatse as much as I have.
Why Shaco support ?
If you are looking for an easy way to climb the elo ladder, Shaco support is NOT it.
It requires a lot of time and practice to be good.
However, Shaco is very fun, and he can be very strong pick into any match up.
A good outplay will feel much more rewarding as a Shaco support.

Shaco can be a great pick against all-in champions.
He can also very effectively create zones that are very hard for enemies to enter.
This can be used to get advantages for objectives like dragon.

Shaco is also capable of peeling through zones he creates for the teammates to use to stay safe.
He can also use his ultimate to force an AoE fear in teamfights.

Shaco is very good at roaming. You can sometimes go to mid, and prevent them from escaping with a box, while attacking the enemy mid laner to perma slow them.
You can even join your jungler for invades, and possibly even secure a kill for them while at it.

What Shaco lacks in traditional support way, he makes up with proper planning and zone control.
A good Shaco support is very painful to play against, and enemies tend to tilt over it.
Nowhere is safe to go against a good Shaco.

Shaco is also very good first pick, due to enemies not knowing you are picking him for support role.
This gives your teammates more time to think about their picks against the enemy champions.

Abilities

Passive - Backstab
Shaco deals more damage with his auto and his E if hit enemy from behind.
This is very useful especially early on. You can out-damage most of the supports and ADC's long as you can hit them from behind. This ability has no cooldown, so repeated auto attacks / E's will ALL deal the bonus damage.

Q - Deceive
A little shorter "flash" with stealth right after. If you attack an enemy when stealthed, it will break the stealth and deal bonus damage.
Forces a small critical hit if stealth breaking attack is a backstab.
You can use W or R without breaking the stealth. E will break the stealth.
You want to use this for repositioning yourself, escaping or getting in the fight.
This ability deals pretty high damage early on even as AP shaco, long as you manage to land the first attack from behind the enemy.

W - Jack in the Box
Your main zoning tool. This is the ability that lets you control zones. You will need to plan ahead, and create zones for your team to be able to take objectives and win fights.

E - Shiv
Your main poke and execute tool. You throw a point and click shiv that will land on the enemy and deals damage and slows the target.
It will deal 50% more damage if the target has less than 30% of their max HP remaining.
You will also get a passive, that gives the slow effect for you and your clone's auto attacks, long as this ability is OFF cooldown.
You can use this slow to prevent enemies escaping your ADC by simply right clicking on the enemy and letting Shaco (or clone) auto attack them for permanent slow.

R - Hallucinate
Upon casting Shaco will disappear briefly and spawn back with a clone.
This clone looks exactly like Shaco, but will not be able to cast abilities.
You can move your clone by using alt + right click or R.
If the clone dies, it will explode dealing damage and causing fear.
This will also spawn 3 mini boxes that shoot all enemies in range.
You can use this abilitys disappear to dodge various of enemy abilities.
Including, but not limited to:
- Karthus R
- Fizz R (when the shark appears from ground to deal damage)
- Jhin 4th auto attack (or any non-instant projectile auto attack)
- Caitlyn R (wait till the bullet is traveling towards you to make Cait's R go on cooldown)
- Zed R (the cast part when you get the debuff, not the damage pop)
Setup
LEASH SETUP:

Leashing is pretty simple. You want to run for the anti-invade box.
Then you want to put a box under blue / red at 0:51 and recall.
This recall will regenate your mana.
Next you just walk back to the blue / red and put down another box.
This leash should be enough, so you and your ADC can go take an early lead in lane.
Or you can attack the blue / red a few times from behind it to proc your passive.

To leash for top side of the map, simply run to the camp after anti-invade box,
and put down a box at 0:51 and recall.
Then you just walk to bot lane.

LANING PHASE SETUP:

Farming setup:
This prevents enemies from engaging on your ADC, while letting minions pass.

Anti engage setup:
This setup is very good against direct engage champions that like to jump in on your ADC.

Anti Gank Setup:
Good setup for preventing enemy ganks, especially when you are pushing.

Kill Pushing Enemy Setup:
An aggressive setup to set just before enemies push.
This can score you a kill if enemies push past the box.

DRAGON SETUP:

To set up a dragon, you want to head for the dragon before it spawns.
You can make a quick setup in few seconds, however you can use up to 1:30 to properly set up a dragon. So decide how long you need for the situation, and informate your team of your plan with a few pings.

BLUE SIDE:

RED SIDE:
Warding
Looking at guides for certain ward positions isn't very good in my opinion.
Thats because wards are situational, and you want to use them for the situation.
Also don't forget to use control wards, even if you already planted one.
It's good to replace a bad control ward with a new good one.

Only look at this part of the guide, if you really struggle with warding, and need a general direction where to use them.

Anyway, here are some examples of important ward spots during laning phase.

BLUE SIDE:

RED SIDE:
Tricks
One box setup double fear:
You pull an enemy into a box, and just before they step on it, you place another box in their fear direction.

Clone pop using enemy turret:
Force a fear to catch a kill using your ultimate and taking turret aggro with it.

Turret shot dodge + aggro reset:
You can reset turret aggro and dodge a turret shot by timing your ultimate.

There are many other tricks, but I currently don't have a video of them.
These include, but is not limited to:
- Ulti dodging all sorts of things
- Using your clone to perma slow an enemy (clone AA while E off-cooldown)
- Force clone pop in teamfights by walking it in enemy team AoE
- Clone tether range usage (walking clone away from you to make it reappear next to you)
- False movement Q (showing enemies that you Q one way, when you actually go to different direction)
Item Set
I also made an item set for easier item building.

Finishing Words
I hope you find this guide helpful, as it is my first one.
Just keep in mind, that the main goal is to have fun.
For me Shaco support is fun and I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I have.

I also want to apologize for my MS-PAINt skills.

I will try to update this guide when ever my IRL problems and lack of energy lets me.

You can find me in Discord with username: jonitin
Feel free to hit me up about anything.

To improve as a Shaco support it's also important to watch the enemy perspective when reviewing your games. I will end this guide by leaving you this clip to enjoy.
